Praying with the Art of the Life of Christ
This year our Praying with Art Series focuses on the art of the life of Christ as it has been portrayed by numer-ous Christian artists throughout the centuries in a wide variety of styles. This semester (Sep-Dec 2020) will span from the Annunciation to just before the last week in Christ’s life.
Next semester (beginning Jan 2021) will pick up from the last week of Christ’s life and go beyond the Ascension. There is no required text, but Scripture readings will be suggested for each event that is portrayed. Join us to appreciate the art and to pray with it as well.

Behind many of the changes inspired by Vatican II stands the work of Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner (1904-1984), considered by many to be the foremost Catholic thinker of the 20th century. At the time of his death he had published more than 4,000 books, articles and encyclopedia entries on almost every conceivable theological topic. Rahner’s insightful reconception of traditional Catholic beliefs remained thoroughly orthodox, deriving its core inspiration from personal prayer and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This seven-session seminar will provide a simple introduction to and overview of Rahner’s massive theo-logical works, focusing on his major essays on faith today, the mystery of God and human existence, the Incar-nation, the unity of the love of God and the love of neighbor, devotion to Mary, and the future of the Church.
Instructor Fr. Justin Kelly, SJ is professor of religious studies at the University of Detroit Mercy and has led numerous seminars at Manresa.

Ignatian Volunteers at ManresaYOUR MOST IMPORTANT WORK MAY BEGIN
AFTER YOU RETIRE!
WHO WE AREThe Ignatian Volunteers at Manresa are men and women, age 50 and better, who share their skills, talents and life experiences by serving the poor and marginalized. Ignatian Volunteers help people in need, work for a just society and grow deeper in their Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian tradition. WHAT WE DOIgnatian Volunteers work at least eight hours a week at a Detroit-area service agency such as Lighthouse of Oakland County, University of Detroit Mercy Institute for Leadership
and Service, Pope Francis Center, Loyola High School, Mercy Literacy Center, Crossroads, Capuchin Youth Program, Detroit Cristo Rey High School, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, All Saints Neighborhood Center and Stephen Ministries. WHEN WE MEET The Volunteers meet monthly (September-June) at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, where, with their chaplain, they pray and reflect on their service experiences and find support, understanding and encouragement. They also attend an annual overnight retreat.
If you are interested in learning more about the Ignatian Volunteers at Manresa, please contact Nick Sharkey at
[email protected] or 248.735.8148.

With our continued prayers,Anne Smith & Lori Kneisler W2W Facilitators
Movements of Lectio Divina:READ – slowly, several times, aloud if possible; listen for a “word,” or place yourself imaginatively into the sceneREFLECT – what “word” or what person in the story stood out for you and whyRESPOND – talk to God about what touched, challenged or comforted youREST – simply enjoy being in God’s presence; if your mind wanders, focus on your “word”

~ Silence is Golden ~Since most of Manresa’s retreats and days of reflection are held in silence (yes, even the meals!), please be sensitive to this whenever you are in the house or walking the grounds. Thank you!
“If we want to pray, we must learn to be still, to quieten ourselves. In fact, this very quietness, this silent stillness frequently becomes prayer when God manifests the Divine by responding in stillness. In and through this silence, this stillness, you will attain things that money cannot buy, things like wisdom and serenity and joy and God.”
~ Fr. Leo Cachat, SJ
Thank you for maintaining the silence!

The Spiritual Exercises in Daily LifeThe Spiritual Exercises, developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, offer a way to grow in prayer; to develop a real and personal relationship with God; to see more clearly God’s presence in creation, your personal life story and
current life circumstances; and to know Jesus more intimately, love Him more deeply and follow Him more closely. The opportunity to pray and reflect on the meditations and themes of the Spiritual Exercises in the midst of your ordinary daily life requires a commitment of 60 to 90 minutes of daily prayer on specific Scripture selections and weekly meetings with a director for a period of nine or ten months.Although most prefer to begin in September, the sessions may begin at any time of the year. The stipend is $20 for each session with your director. If you are interested, contact Ann Dillon for more details at [email protected] or phone 248.644.4933 Ext. 107.
