A Community Says GoodbyeFr. Walter L. Farrell, SJ, part of our Manresa family since 2007, first as Acting Executive Director, then as a member of the Jesuit staff, passed from our midst while on recuperative leave at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Michigan on July 13, 2012. Fr. Farrell was a mentor and spiritual director to many people, taught seminars, workshops and conducted days of recollection for groups while at Manresa, especially during Lent. His kind spirit and deep wisdom was cultivated through many years of living within the Jesuit Society. Walter was born on June 7, 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 7, 1934 at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1947 at West Baden College, West Baden Springs, Ohio. He took final vows on August 15, 1951.

Fr. Farrell was a giant in the Society—both physically and influentially. He offered care, instruction and guidance both inside and outside the Society of Jesus. His wisdom, influence and wry sense of humor were experienced by many people locally, nationally and internationally. Walter taught rational psychology (i.e. metaphysics) at the University of Detroit (1952-53) and West Baden College (1953-65). He offered direction, guidance and leadership to members of the Society of Jesus as Rector of West Baden (1958-65), Consultor to the Detroit Provincial (1962-65), Provincial of the Detroit Province (1965-71), Detroit Province Delegate to General Congregations 31 (1966) and 32 (1974-75), Secretary for Formation at the USA Jesuit Conference (1971-76), Tertian director (1976-78 and 1990-96), President of the USA Jesuit Conference (1984-90), Treasurer of the Detroit Province (1996-2007), Consultant to the Provincial on Ignatian Values in Ministry (1996-2011). Walter also entrusted and bestowed Ignatian Spirituality to many people as Director of the Spiritual Exercises Center at Colombiere Center (1973-80), serving on the Archdiocese of Detroit Continuing Formation Team (1979-81), President of Jesuit Retreat & Renewal Ministries (1980-81), Director of the Romero Center (1981-83), National Ecclesial Assistant for Christian Life Communities (1991-96) and as Acting Executive Director of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House (2007-08).

Throughout his life, Walter also directed the Spiritual Exercises and shared his considerable knowledge and understanding of the history, Institute and workings of the Society of Jesus with others. As Fr. Howard Grey, SJ portrayed Walter during his homily at the Mass of Resurrection at Colombiere, “Walter was a man of sincere devotion to Jesus and the Society. He brought a sincere dignity wherever he was and to everything he did.” Our Manresa Community, while we mourn his loss, we will give glory to our Lord for sharing him with us for the years he was here. He left an impact which will last.

2012 Picnic Features Trinity of HighlightsSunny weather, record attendance and teamwork highlighted Manresa’s fourth annual family picnic on June 3. Cool breezes and shady trees as well as a canopy over the outdoor altar moderated the sunlight streaming onto the grotto and the picnic area. Assisted by Frs. Hyde and Fennessy, Bishop Donald Hanchon celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity in a bilingual ceremony supported with readings and music from Manresa affiliate El Rincon Ignaciano. This was Bp. Hanchon’s second year as celebrant and attendees welcomed his expressed desire to return for future picnic Masses.

We were deeply saddened this past month by the passing of a beloved friend--Fr. Walter Farrell, S.J., who went to the Lord on Friday, July 13th, at the age of 96. Fr. Walt had been serving as a staff member of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House since 2007 and remained with us until this past Holy Thursday when he was assigned to the Colombiere Center after suffering a fall in his room. After his move to Colombiere, he continued to travel to Manresa to carry on with a seminar in the Spiritual Exercises which he had begun earlier in the year, and even volunteered to help teach a workshop in Ignatian spirituality to some of the younger members of the Chicago-Detroit Jesuit Province

this past May. One of the final classes in his long career as an educator was a lecture on the Spiritual Exercises given to this group of young Jesuit scholastics in a room hastily arranged at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Pontiac, where he was being treated for the blood disorder he suffered from. Unable to make it to the retreat house to deliver his lecture, he asked that the students meet him in the hospital where he could offer his class.

Throughout his life, Father Farrell directed the Spiritual Exercises and shared his considerable knowledge and understanding of Jesuit history, the Jesuit Constitutions, and the Charism of the Society of Jesus with others. He was formally missioned to share Ignatian Spirituality outside of the confines of the Jesuit circle when he was named Director of the Spiritual Exercises Center at Colombiere Center (1973-80). He also served on the Archdiocese of Detroit Continuing Formation Team (1979-81), acted as President of Jesuit Retreat & Renewal Ministries (1980-81), named as Director of the Romero Center (1981-83), was National Ecclesial Assistant for Christian Life Communities (1991-96), and served as Acting Director of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House (2007-08). Walt spent his life passing on the Ignatian tradition to a variety of audiences, and continued his ministry of sharing the Exercises until the very end of his life.

The legacy of Fr. Farrell is embodied in the work which continues to be carried on at Manresa through the Internship Program, our retreat ministry, the various seminars that we offer, and the pastoral counseling that we do. You are invited to take part in any of these programs, but we especially would like you to consider joining us for a new lecture program being offered this Fall as the Walter Farrell, S.J. Memorial Lecture Series which will revisit the documents of the II Vatican Council as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Council. We feel that this will be a fitting tribute to the work and the spirit of this great Jesuit who contributed so much to our ministry at Manresa.

Manresa will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Fr. Walt on September 28 at 8:00 AM. Manresa traditionally remembers its deceased members on the last Friday of the month, so it seems fitting. A light breakfast will be served following Mass. All are welcome.

I would also encourage you to take part in this year’s Spirit of Manresa Dinner Auction. Your support of this event, either by joining us on the evening or by purchasing a raffle ticket will help us continue the work in which Fr. Farrell played such an important role.

Picnic; con’t from frontAt the dismissal, Bp. Hanchon advised attendees to “follow the smoke,” for the cooks and their helpers, provided by Manresa’s AA community, had already stoked the coals along a serving line for hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings. This was quickly peopled by hungry picnickers, some with colorful streamers they received along the way, who bore their generously-stacked plates to waiting benches, blankets and folding chairs. The Swank Club, a three-piece band headed by Dennis Farac, began its set from the electrically amplified comfort of the gazebo.The afternoon continued with kids’ lawn games and tours of the retreat house led by Jerry and Carole Sugrue. Bp. Hanchon even joined Bob and Lee Kendell, Mary McKeon and Hugh Buchanan serving ice cream to the crowd, a perfect dessert for the warm day. The 200 cars in the event’s two parking areas suggested an attendance of over 400. Larry Hadley of Keego Harbor said, “This was my second Manresa picnic and, this year as last, I had just completed a weekend retreat that morning. The picnic was great, with lots of good food and an awesome band—just a fun, laid-back atmosphere for everyone. It provided a smooth transition from my retreat back into everyday life.” Ron Ezell and his wife, Peggy,

of Troy invited her sister and a friend to join them at their first Manresa picnic. “The large number of young children made for a very enjoyable people-watching experience. You don’t know what pure joy is until you watch a 3-year-old eat a large ice cream cone (melting as it’s licked) after having finished both cookies and punch.”

Ron expressed his resolve to attend future picnics at Manresa.As at previous picnics, tickets were sold for the Manresa Jesuit raffle but this year they had a new look: only 250 will be sold at $100 each for a grand prize of $5,000, a 2nd prize of $2,000 and a 3rd prize of $1,000. Hugh Buchanan explained that this way, the chances of any ticket winning are greatly increased over previous years. Some people are sharing the expense by teaming up to buy one or more tickets. The grand prize drawing will take place at this year’s Gala on September 22.As the coals cooled down and the canopies were being struck, volunteers Bob and Lee Kendell reflected on another successful picnic: “The day seemed so perfect as many volunteers generously committed their time and talent to this collective effort. Even the weather contributed to the day with a steady breeze and no rain! We think the Manresa family picnic is firmly in place as a cherished tradition.” Written by Paul Seibold

Concert SeriesAnother exciting concert season will begin in October featuring the return of the Woodward Corridor Musicians, a lively and talented group of performers who filled the Wernert Lounge with the classics last January. We are delighted to have this group return for another performance. Their mission is to create a musical environment in which urban and suburban communities will enjoy coming together. It is perfect for our setting at Manresa.Our Christmas Concert on December 9 will bring two very talented local performers together for a seasonal delight that will lift your holiday spirits. Chris Charboneau and Patty Ward combine to bring a melodious array of favorites and new songs in a wonderful blend of voice and piano. Don’t let your Christmas season pass without hearing these joyous sounds.In January (between the last playoff game and the Superbowl) we will be treated to the artistry of the Fleur de Lys Chamber Ensemble. The ensemble is an exciting and sought-after group within the Detroit Metropolitan area. Originally performing as the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra Chamber Players, it was composed exclusively of members from that orchestra. The ensemble has since grown to include musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Austin Symphony presenting concerts under its present name. Finally in March, do not miss the jazzy sounds of Jerry McKenzie’s “Just Jazz” as he enlivens Wernert Lounge with his gifted group of musicians. Jerry McKenzie’s Just Jazz is one of the metro area’s premier jazz groups. Jerry is a renowned jazz drummer from his Grammy Award years with the Stan Kenton Orchestra to his frequent performances with the Detroit International Jazz Festival, Stan Kenton Tribute Concerts in England, the Brookside Jazz Ensemble, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and the Johnny Trudell Orchestra. Do not miss this talented group!As in previous seasons, each concert will include an afterglow in Manresa’s dining room where listeners can savor light refreshments and beverages as they mingle with the artists. Also, retreatant Bill Cohan will be recognized for his amazing accomplishment of the past 66 years. Oh, yes, and most importantly, we are celebrating Father Jim Serrick’s Golden Jubilee as a priest! Additionally, the gala event will feature a live auction with some incredible gifts

(see the next page), some fun games and a special gift raffle, live music and dancing to the sounds of the Rick Lieder Band will round out the evening.

But the dinner auction is more than just a gathering, it is Manresa’s primary fundraiser and your support is crucial to us to sustain our mission. Manresa has served our community for 86 years by providing the opportunity for spiritual growth through retreats, workshops and day-long presentations to young and old alike. Although primary financial support for Manresa is derived from donations and gifts from those who come and participate, it is not enough … for Manresa maintains all are welcome to participate regardless of their ability to pay.

We received a call from a young man from St. Hugo’s parish, Mario Pages, who belongs to Boy Scout Troop 1037. He was looking for an Eagle Scout project he could do on Manresa property. Mario is a member of the same

troop who contributed the entrance landscaping and walk-over deck on the nature trail, so we were very happy to entertain his project. After a walk around the property with Brother Mike O’Grady, Mario suggested he improve the ‘garden’ (a stretch of the meaning of the term at the time) in front of the Risen Christ statue just off the entrance road. When I went to look at the area, I found a memorial tree which succumbed to the ash borer on the hill behind the area, dedicated to Garth and Betty Charbeneau. Charbeneau was a name I knew; I worked with a Hank Charbeneau for many years while with Ford Motor’s Chesterfield Plant. Could the two be related? In fact, I found they were. It turns out Garth was Hank’s brother and that he worked at Manresa for about seven or eight years! There are many of Garth’s contributions to the landscape we have grown to appreciate, including the wooden bridges to the island, the construction of the foundations and erection of the statues of the Risen Christ along the entry road, St. Joseph near the Tuomey fountain and St. Thomas Aquinas in the large courtyard outside the main chapel. Garth

was the principal maintenance man prior to Pete Luyckx (who has been here since Garth left, for the last 26 years.)Betty, it turns out, worked in the kitchen, sewed and repaired linens and generally helped in housekeeping where she could. Both lived on the second floor of the La Storta cottage where John and Kathy Daniels lived for a number of years and

where Mary Ellen and I now reside. I contacted Betty and found out Garth died a number of years ago, but she accepted my invitation to re-visit Manresa with her daughter Monica Charbeneau. The visit was a wonderful success, reminiscing about old times and visiting old haunts. She brought a couple of pictures, one of which we tried to mimic with a current photo. (see above) She was very happy to see the work accomplished on the Risen Christ by Mario and the rest of the boys

from Troop 1037 and smiled broadly when she saw the new tree in place at the top of the hill. She belongs to a long line of wonderful, faith-filled people who helped shape Manresa for us to enjoy. Thank you, Betty and Garth, and thank you Mario.

Maintaining our peace requires our ability to focus and to become quiet in order to be more present to the Spirit within. Yoga is a practice to help us get to our quiet center. The benefits of yoga affect our whole being. Yoga is a practice that integrates the whole of our being: mind, body and spirit. We will focus on our breath, alignment of our bodies while deeply stretching and gently move into a quiet space within for meditation. Praying with Ignatius of Loyola This prayer series, modeled on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, is centered on the person of Jesus Christ. Each week, the prayers will reflect one of the four themes from the Exercises. Additionally, at our weekly meetings we will discuss various topics relating to Ignatian spirituality. Praying with Ignatius of Loyola offers an opportunity for spiritual growth while encountering Christ in new and deeper ways in Scripture and daily life. The format includes small group sessions for sharing. Participation requires weekly attendance and a commitment of 30 minutes of prayer each day.

The Cor Jesu Program The Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life

September to MayWould you like to make a thirty-day retreat, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, but do not have a month to spare? St. Ignatius foresaw this situation and provided for it so that you could pray and reflect on the meditations and themes of the Spiritual Exercises even in the midst of your ordinary daily life. The Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life require a commitment of 60 to 90 minutes of daily prayer centered on specific Scripture selections and a weekly meeting with a director for a period of about nine-months. Readiness for this intensive retreat ordinarily grows out of shorter directed retreats, daily prayer, and regular spiritual direction with someone who reflects with you on your experience of God in prayer. This is a way to grow in prayer; to develop a real and personal relationship with God; to see more clearly God’s presence in creation, your personal life story and current life circumstances; to know Jesus more intimately, love Him more deeply, and follow Him more closely.

If you are ready for this retreat experience, Manresa can guide you to an appropriate director, a man or woman who has made the Exercises, has been prepared to walk with you through them, and can help you discover how to pray and how God is leading you. And this is a good time of the year to begin. We recommend beginning this retreat in early September so that the usual sequence of prayer and reflection can be in harmony with the celebrations of the liturgical year.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, it behooves us to take a closer look at what the Council contributed to the life of the Church. Speakers from Sacred Heart Seminary, University of Detroit Mercy and from area parishes will address 20 key conciliar passages which will help us to see the vision of the Council Fathers. We will look at the Council from the perspective of what the Fathers hoped for, what they accomplished and applications today for the Church in the Third Millennium.

Donor SpotlightWithout exaggeration, it is safe to say that the Captains and Lieutenants who recruit for Manresa’s retreats are one of our greatest assets. These dedicated volunteers spend countless hours calling, reminding and sometimes cajoling others to reserve their annual retreat. One of the most successful (and beloved) recruiters is Bob Tuomey from St. Anastasia Parish.

Bob claims his motivation stems from his competitive nature. He prides himself on filling up the House so there is no more room, more full than any other weekend. Once, he claims, Fr. McGrail met him at the door as he checked in for his retreat and told him, “No more, Bob, we have no more beds!” Not to worry, Father, was the reply. And up drove a semi-truck. Bob had not only recruited 88 retreatants, he had arranged for all the extra beds, sheets and pillows they would need for the weekend.

Bob was instrumental in introducing hundreds of retreatants to Manresa over the years. One of them was Walter Schwartz who, in turn, introduced his son, George. Bob and Walter began coming to Manresa shortly after the war in 1945, George said, and came pretty much every year since. Bob would bring a rollaway and place it in the women’s bathroom and sleep there if he had to when the house was full. One year, they used the motel down the street to handle the overflow.

At one point, George realized Bob’s contribution to Manresa should be acknowledged. He met with Fr. Serrick, Executive Director at the time, and they decided on a fountain to be dedicated in Bob’s honor. In 2003 the the fountain was installed as a tribute to Bob. Bob has made retreats every year for 63 years. This year is the first that Bob was not able to make his retreat. His doctor told him no, he was too weak. But Bob continues to recruit from his hospital bed where he holds court in the living room of his house. His group continues as one of the largest of the year.

While not everyone will be as effective at recruiting as Bob, everyone can invite a son or a daughter, as Walter did, or invite a neighbor. Make it your goal to bring 2 new people to your retreat this year. You may not get a fountain in your honor, but your effort will make a huge difference in their lives and go a long way in helping Manresa stem declining retreat enrollment by keeping our House full.

One of the most popular places of prayer on the grounds, the Tuomey Fountain has drawn hundreds to sit and listen to the soothing waters tumbling over the courses of rock. There is something therapeutic about the setting which brings wholesomeness, peace and a secure understanding that God is close.

Retreat Houses Closing With sadness I share the news that two New York Province Jesuit Retreat Houses will close their doors permanently as of June 1, 2013. The announcement stated simply, “The model of maintaining retreat houses is no longer financially viable or consistent with this new vision. Our Superior General, Father Adolfo Nicolas, reminds us that renewing our apostolates in response to the needs of the people of God may at times require leaving places where we have served.”

As I reflect upon these closings, I am so grateful for the many generous donors who give to Manresa, and for the dedicated staff who keep expenses in check. At the same time I realize that Manresa continues to face future challenges and is as much at risk as any organization. We can no longer take it for granted that Manresa will be here for our children and grandchildren.

With that thought in mind, I encourage you to consider a gift to Manresa’s McGrail Fund. A planned or outright gift to this fund (which serves similar to an endowment fund) will greatly help maintain and enhance Manresa’s future financial stability. You will be instrumental in helping Manresa develop a self-sustaining financial plan that ensures that our children and grandchildren will blessed, as we all have been, with this “spiritual oasis” that is Manresa. Manresa is the grateful recipient of a “plant grant” through the generosity of REI, a premier outdoor gear and sporting goods store located in Troy, Northville and Ann Arbor and The Friends of the Rouge, a Dearborn-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River. These organizations provided enough native-species plants to create a 200 square foot garden along Manresa’s riverbank. Volunteers from Shrine Boy Scout Troop 1634 helped prepare the site, plant it and clean up the area.Because the plants, such as Hairy beard-tongue, Monkey-flower and Three-lobed Coneflower, evolved under local conditions, the plants will not need any additional fertilizer or insecticides to survive. The roots will grow deep, stabilizing the soil and preventing localized erosion. As the plants grow, they will provide habitat for wild life and will help control invasive plants to preserve the biodiversity. The garden will provide a lovely spot to pause for prayer and reflection.Manresa is documenting the environmentally-sound development of the garden photographically and will share the photos at a new event, Reflections on Creation, a Garden and Environmental Workshop planned for June 28, 2013. Participants in the workshop will be able to compare the before and after of the site as experts describe the benefits of native planting and explain the importance of restoring the Rouge River. This will be the first time its 86-year-old history that Manresa has partnered with Friends of the Rouge to present such a workshop.

The event will be both educational and fun for all ages. The day will include a boutique offering garden and environment-

related information and products, a bucket raffle, music, food and several speakers. Along with presenters from the Friends of Rouge, talks will be given by scientists from the Cranbrook Institute of Science, master gardeners and other environmental experts. Fr. Bernie Owens will talk about the Spirituality of Nature. Tours of the house and gardens will be offered.The proceeds from the workshop (fee tbd)will benefit the upkeep of Manresa’s 39 acres and other capital projects. Manresa’s renovation of the Stations of the Cross is underway! On June 20, with the complete work plan ready, materials delivered and sun shining, work commenced. Wayne and Tim from Booms Stone were immediately struck by the peace and beauty of the surroundings of their latest project. Wayne, who is a parishioner at Immaculate Conception in Anchorville, said, “I love what I do but it is always extra special when it is a project religious in nature.”

Wayne laughed as he shared the crews’ shock when a mouse jumped out of a pipe right by his face as they dismantled the rusted interior structure. “There must have been a whole family in there. Every now and then, as the men worked, you would hear an ‘Eeek’ as a mouse made its escape, and it wasn’t the mouse doing the squeaking.”

Booms Stone began with 2 stations, the third and the fourth (first two across the river). They dismantled and rebuilt those two to “prove out their process” and test the design. Then they moved on to the others. Each piece of the station “puzzle” is carefully placed, shimmed and adjusted to be plumb and level. The stations weigh a total of nearly 2 tons, with individual pieces 200-400 lbs. each. Tim and Wayne wrap the stones with heavy duty straps and, with a heave and a grunt, inch the stone in place.

Once the stations are in position, Kenny Weikal, our landscape designer from Torre and Bruglio, will artfully design the wrapping of the original tufa stone to create the illusion of the new growing out of the old. The stations should be finished around August 22nd, if the weather cooperates. With temperatures hovering in 3 digits, some afternoons have been too hot to attempt this intensive physical labor.

Wayne from Booms Stone works on the base of the Fifth Station. Rebar is attached to the base of the station and then corresponding holes are drilled into the cement footing. This design, along with the permanent epoxy the workers use, ensures that the stations will remain upright and plumb for hundreds of years.

Peter will build on his well-received Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus talk by discussing prayer and art, highlighting many pieces found in the DIA’s permanent collection. The evening will include docent-led tours of DIA’s Sacred Art from many cultures. Manresa’s Leadership Award and Lifetime Achievemennt Award recipients will be announced that night.

The day will include a talk or discussion, time for private prayer/devotion, the celebration of Reconciliation and Eucharist and dinner to complete the evening.
