Greetings and welcome to a preview of the first round of action at the Worlds

Greatest Football Club in season 2012.

It feels like its taken a while but amateur (well, amateur for us anyway) football is

back and with a forecast of 27 degrees and the bouncy castle locked in you would

be mad not to pop down to a magnificent looking Bob Neil 1 tomorrow afternoon

to see the A/B grade take on Flinders Park. Head to www.bobneil.com to check

out the teams.

It has been an off-season of change at the AUFC and we go into tomorrow’s

festivities with the long room bar/canteen in full operation (Port V Swannies on

the big screen), the electronic scoreboard working Bob willing , a new venue for

Hold your Bowlies in the Cumby on Waymouth Street and the first ever over 35s

game on Sunday. Exciting times indeed.

THE CUMBY

to get the upstairs renos finished and ready for R1 HOLD YOUR BOWLIES at the

new Blacks official watering-hole. We are very excited about this new partnership,

and players and members will be very well looked after. Members cards give you:

- $5.50 pints of Super Dry and Hills Cider, 24/7

For the First ever Hold your Bowlies at the Cumby Cam “Blue Loo” Bryson has

come out of hibernation and will be your host for the evening. 7:00 kick off and I

MARK COPPING “THE COPPO SHOW”

The AUFC Community is deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of

Mark Copping. Mark unfortunately lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday 3rd

April, aged 39. A devoted family man, he leaves behind his wife Michelle and son

Harrison. A talented player as well as a true character of the club, Mark "Elvis"

Copping or "The Coppo Show" played 83 games in the higher grades of the club in

the 90s, mainly as a key forward.

Our sincerest thoughts are extended to Mark's family at this immensely difficult

time, including his brother Paul, who also played for The Blacks. His iconic nature

will be deeply missed by those who knew him. He had watchable style on and off

the field and we will always remember "The Coppo Show". With his chin-up, he

fought bravely. He was a legend.

Thanks to Clint Rule for the above words, note that Mark’s funeral is being held

this afternoon at 2:00 in the Carr & Kleemann Funeral Chapel, 1 Morphett Street,

Mt. Barker followed by a Private Cremation. If desired, in lieu of floral tributes,

donations to the Mary Potter Hospice, North Adelaide would be appreciated by

the family. If you can’t make the funeral but would still like to make a donation

click on the link below.

Black armbands will be worn by all AUFC teams this weekend in memory of “The

Coppo Show”.

STONE’S MAN

Inside all of us is a fire. This fire needs fuel.

Our sponsor provides and we can administer perpetual energy!

Stone's Man is a simple concept.

AUFC buys 7 bottles of stones and Angoves give us 7 more for free.

Each team gets 2 bottles per round. One for the team and the other for the most

selfless Blackman of the round.

This man can either tape up his fellow player, run water, smother a kick or cause

the opponent to spontaneously combust but he has given his spirit to the Greatest

football Club on Earth.

This accolade is only awarded by the coach post performance. His efforts are

rewarded and he gets Stone's!

At Super Sunday the man with the mostest gets the Stone's Trophy via a tally of

the most Stone Man points.

Stone Man wins a bronzed bottle of stones provided by Angoves and a case of the

humble elixir.

ROUND 1 FIXTURES

Div 2 - Aussie Bob & the Contract Killers vs Wacko Jacko & his Flinders Park mob -

Div 2R - Spud O'Reilly and the Non-Fighting Irish vs Wacko Jacko & his Flinders

Park mob 12:15 @ Bob Neil #1

Div 6 - Cyril & the C-Bombs vs Giggle Farm 2:15 @ Giggle Farm (Cnr Belaile Rd &

Div C1 - The Bustards vs Max Walkerville 10:15 @ Tangle Park (Walkerville Oval)

Div 8 - The Chardonnay Socialists & Div 8R - The Scum BYE! @ The Long Room Bar

Good luck to all players representing the AUFC this weekend. Round 1 is always

near on impossible from a selection perspective and this week is no different,

especially with 60 new registered players at the club and 2 teams having a bye.

However, if you have missed out this week rest assured that the teams will sort

themselves out over the next few weeks and by mid July Kernas will be getting a

call to fill in because the Scum are short and its snow season.

A GRADE UPDATE

In the main game the Contract Killers take on the newly promoted Flinders Park

Reds (coached by ex Black coach Wacko Jacko) in what should be a great contest

on a magnificent Uni Oval deck this Saturday at 2:15. Word on the street is that

Wacko was letting his players know after training last night that while they would

be tucked up in bed preparing for the game the Uni lads would be at the Cumby

drinking free pi55 until all hours, thereby giving the Reds a big advantage on

Satdy. One Red lad then piped up asking “any way I can get a clearance to Uni?”.

The Contract Killers have had a solid summer and recruited well, with plenty of

new lads joining the group and some old ones returning as well:

Andrew Mcintyre – 25yo played 100 odd league games with North Adelaide, key

position type

Lachie Roach – 19yo played ressies at North Adelaide last year, pacy on baller and

son of ex Black coach Cock-Roach

Josh Willis – 22yo played in an A grade flag at Kadina last year, a solid country type

who has had a great pre-season

Seb Paynter – Sturt supporters from the 80s will love this name, returned from

NSW this year where he played for North Shore in the Sydney AFL. Strong on ball

type

Will Paynter – Brother of Seb and a likely midfield type who has come out of the

Sturt 18s system

Tom Martin – The ex A grade captain, current club deputy chairman and action

man of the club is back. And if he’s not selected in the A grade he’ll revert to the

over 35s on Sunday

Clark Roberts-Thomson – the youngest of 4 R-T brothers to represent the club,

CRT returns from a two year stint in Singers keen to add to his 188 goal tally from

75 A grade games thus far. Unfortunately out with an old mans driver this week

Jack Lewis – returning from a knee reconstruction last year, Jack has had a solid

pre-season and returns to the field in the B grade this week

You can also elect to become a Player Sponsor for $350 and we have added a

slight variation to this in 2012, with the opportunity for you to effectively sponsor

your old number in the A grade team. We have the ok from all parties (aside from

Boz) for A grade players to wear 3 digits so if you would like to see your old

number running around in the A grade no matter how high it was then this is a

great way of doing it. Contact Rulebook for further info if you are interested.

The support we got from our sponsors, members and past players last year was

really incredible and it is hugely appreciated by us and especially by the Treasurer.

As you may appreciate the cost of putting seven senior football teams on the park

has risen dramatically over the last few years, with items such as med equipment,

physios, SAAFL calls, umpires etc all posing a large financial impost on the club on

a weekly basis. Not only have the funds raised through the membership drive

allowed us to meet these higher costs, but they have also enabled us to build a

small cash surplus which really helps in the early stages of the season, keep subs

capped at a reasonable level (we would still like to reduce these in years to come

if possible) and still have some left over to undertake regular improvements of our

facilities. For example, you wouldn’t believe how much new goal posts cost these

days!! We have a reasonable list of items that we would like to attack at Park 10

this year and we will keep you up to date on the progress of these.

So, thanks once again for your continued support, it is absolutely crucial in

ensuring the long term strength of the AUFC.

BOB NEIL PHOTO OF THE WEEK

A taste of summer

FACEBOB, TWEETER & THE WORLD WIDE WEB

The Blacks are moving with the times no doubt. We have set up an official

Facebob page, which is being updated brilliantly by family Heath, and also a linked

twitter page. Note that the Facebob page will be the best spot to go this year for

Blacks photos and video clips so be sure to click the link below and “like”. We have

194 followers already, which is pretty decent given that its only been up and

running for a month or two.

The website is also being updated to a non-flash version currently, which will

enable it to be viewed on those rarely used i-pods, i-pads and i-bobs (yet to be

officially released). Teams are always listed on www.bobneil.com by about midday

Friday and results should be up by around midday Monday.

This newsletter will come out weekly on a Friday and we would love your input

with any old or new photos, anecdotes or ridiculous stories. Get in touch with me

on [email protected].

THE GREYS OVER 35 TEAM – COURTESY OF WOLVERINE

The Greys play their first ever game against the Phantoms this Sunday at about

1pm at Flinders Park. This game is to be taken as every other game for the season

- as a means of keeping us out of the pub for 2 hours longer than normal. The

association will be watching on and have pledged their two leading umpires to

officiate our first hitout in the new league. It is a double header game so there is a

game before us at 11am. Being a social game more than anything it'll be good to

enjoy the hospitality of the home side post game.

So for the commitment to play in Round 1 against the Caspers [Phantoms] has

been encouraging but at this point we do not have a full team, which is reasonably

hilarious given that we have had 62 people indicate that they would like to pull on

the boots this year for the Greys!! So, it would be handy if we can see another 6 or

so put up their hand to show the association that we mean business. That and it

will reduce the amount of egg on my face following the talking up i have done at

the delegates meetings.

Those aware of the traditions of the football club will be aware of the institution

that is Hold Your Bowlies, the weekly awards ceremony. This is something not to

be missed first game especially if you are new to the club. The awards for The

Greys will be presented in a ground breaking format. We will actually name the

best players for the Sunday game on the preceding Saturday night hold your

bowlies! So it is encouraged that we all get to the Cumberland Arms on Saturday

night from about 7pm to hear our awards announced for the game held the day

after on the 15th.

If you have any questions. suggestions or know of anyone else that might be

interested in playing then have them contact The Wolverine at

[email protected] or call 0416008130.

So far the list looks a little like this:

ashley place, cameron Bryson, luke harris , ze-min chua, tony proud, nick vezis,

ben vezis, jamie brown, andrew lines, sandy hancock, nigel venning, michael

lamprell *, gus krievs*, paul clohesy*, mark chase*, damian coats*, matthew

hutchens*.

A couple of the names listed there are guesses or something in the memory recall

has a mention of willingness to play in the first round. Those not listed that want

to play please let me know and those that have an * please confirm either way.

GREYS GET-UP

Those ageing Greys are confused and need your help - which of the many, many

periods of fashion trends and styles they've lived through do they adopt for their

pre and post game uniform? Send your suggestions to Wolverine at

[email protected]

LETTER TO ALL NEW PLAYERS

The President and VPs wrote a letter to all new players of the club, which we

distributed individually at training last night. Repeated below for your interest:

“We would like to welcome you to this great football club that is the Adelaide

University Football Club (The Blacks). The Blacks have an unsurpassed Australian

amateur football history having won 77 premierships in its 106 year life, 23 of

those in Division One. The Blacks hold too many stunning record achievements to

list but we hope you too can be a part of history with us. It may take you more

than one season to beat the club record of 462 games and 1,347 goals (held by

just one “jerk”) but now is an excellent time to start.

However, the record books do not tell the full story of what makes “Bob Neil” tick.

As President and Vice Presidents we can say from experience that it is the

combination of pure, clean sport mixed with the friendships that last a life time.

These professional and personal connections will be invaluable to you in what

ever job you are ever likely to hold in the future across the state, the country or

the world.

In 2012 we are excited at the season that lies ahead and offer our support to you

personally. We hope you enjoy success with your mates at whatever level you aim

to play at. We suggest you aim high.

If we can help you, either inside of football or outside, please do not hesitate to

ask. If you spot us in the long room of the beautiful university oval before a match

please introduce yourself or you can contact us directly (or via your coach).

Kind regards,

Michael Dadds
