Our students respectfully laid wreaths and poignantly laid poppies on some of the 58 special plaques dedicated to the men that paid the ultimate sacrifice from the Lowood district. May I express a sincere thankyou to each of the students that attended and their families for supporting this most special community event. Our link with the Lowood RSL Sub Branch particularly through Miss Judith Schmidt remains strong and I thank Miss Schmidt for the tireless work she does for the Lowood RSL Sub branch and also her continued support of our students to educate on many aspects of the War. I would like to also thank Ms Wells, Mrs Raine, Mrs Eugster, Mrs Levitt and Mr Roach on their attendance, help at the services and support of our school and students at these special anniversary services.

From the Principal It was an extreme honour for our school and School Leaders to be involved in the two Special Remembrance Day services over the weekend. From the Principal

From the Principal Final P&C General Meeting for 2018 School community members are invited to attend the final P&C Meeting of the year to be held next Monday 19 November. The meeting is held in the Administration block and commences at 7:30pm. All are welcome. 2019 Staffing and Enrolments Last Friday incoming teacher Mrs Julie Schulz spent the morning at our school familiarising herself with the school and expectations. Mrs Schulz is greatly looking forward to commencing at Fernvale State School and brings with her an extensive background in Curriculum, Digital Technologies and Behaviour Management. In other fantastic news Miss Zoe Andersen and Miss Jess McGill were offered permanency to the department and will also commence their formal appointment to their teaching career with us at Fernvale State School in 2019. Congratulations to Miss Andersen and Miss McGill. It is also confirmed that Mrs Conway, Mr Parker, Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Sheridan will return in 2019. May I also encourage any students who have not enrolled as yet to please do so particularly new Prep students. Prep orientation days will be occurring shortly and it is vital to each child's successful transition that they experience these orientation days. An email has been distributed to all enrolled Prep students and their families last week. If you have not enrolled as yet please do so immediately so we can capture your enrolment and provide the necessary information to you. Instrumental Music Congratulations is extended to Mr Chambers and the Instrumental Band students on their wonderful showcase of music on parade last Wednesday. A recruitment session was also held on Thursday morning for the Year Three students. Thankyou is also extended to Mrs Adsett for her assistance with the band. I sincerely hope we can enlist many interested and enthusiastic Year Three students for Instrumental Band for the 2019 school year. A parent information session for all Year Three parents and any other new families to our school interested to know more about joining the Instrumental program next year will be held on Wednesday afternoon straight after school in the Music block. Chess Congratulations to Mr Butler and the chess students on their outstanding performance at the chess tournament in Brisbane last Wednesday. We are extremely proud of every student’s effort and achievements at this tournament. Well done to all!

From the Principal ICT Plan Last week with the support of Regional ICT support persons, our school spent a considerable amount of time preparing and considering an ICT Plan for our school and students for the next 5 years. As part of the plan, a significant amount of work and budget will be set aside for enhanced infrastructure and ICT equipment to give our students and staff every opportunity to enhance the skills and learnings required for the 21st century. More news to come. Kind Regards

David

From the Deputy Principal

What a wonderful weekend! I was proud to accompany our Fernvale State School students yesterday as they opened the Memorial at Fernvale and laid poppies in dedication at Lowood in remembrance of the fallen. Our students demonstrated exemplary behaviour and respect for the importance of the day. They are fabulous role models and ambassadors of our school.

2019 Prep Orientation Sessions are fast approaching. These date are 22, 29 Nov and 6 Dec. It is important to RSVP to ensure that we are best prepared for a fabulous school experience for you and your child. RSVP [email protected] or contact our friendly office ladies.

As the end of the year looms and we attend the many functions and parties the season brings, the end of year tiredness becomes a battle for us all. Here are some tips to help 1. Stick to routines – don’t abandon the routines and structures you’ve relied on all year.

2. Get a good night’s sleep – stick to bed time routines that are calm and regular.

3. Healthy eating – healthy meals and snacks help kids cope with the excitement of movie days, parties, excursions etc.

From the Deputy Principal

4. Take it outside – research shows that spending more time outside improves concentration at school. They need to put down the iPad/ game console, turn off the TV or computer and go outside. It is like a giant relief valve for the whole family!

5. Acknowledge progress – encourage your child to look back at the school year and think about what they have learned, what was challenging and what they are proud of. This can be a real motivator for the rest of the year as it reinforces how far they have come. Over the last 15 years, our research team from Griffith University and the University of Southern Queensland have developed and tested a suite of internet-based programs for the treatment of childhood anxiety, called BRAVE-ONLINE. Programs for older children (aged 7-12) and teenagers (aged 13-17) have been freely available since 2014 and have been used by almost 30,000 families. These programs are now available to all Australian families free of charge through beyondblue. The latest program is for young children aged 3-7 years who suffer with anxiety (including worry and fears). The Young Children Program provides education about anxiety and how it works, and teaches parents a variety of strategies to manage anxiety-provoking situations that their child may experience. Parents will also receive information on strategies to better manage their child’s anxious behaviours. We believe this program is particularly useful for schools to share with parents as many young children suffer from separation anxiety and social anxiety in their early school years, which disrupts their early schooling experience. The direct link to our young child program is https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/preschool-program.

‘I don’t divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures…I divide the

world into the learners and non-learners.’ Benjamin Barber
