Fortnightly Issue 16 Term 4 Week 2

10 October 2017

Hi there everyone,

I hope that you all had a lovely break and that our flu season is finally over! It has certainly heated up over the holidays; just in time for swimming to start! Swimming lessons are an integral part of our school curriculum. To sup-port all students with their swimming, Mr Wood, Miss Sophie and I will all be attending the lessons with the classes.

Every Day Counts! Research shows that, in Queensland, higher student attendance is as-sociated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, team-work and resilience, they learn better, they make friends, they are happier and they have a brighter future. Under the law, you must make sure your child attends school on all school days unless there is a reasonable excuse. If your child is late, by only 20 minutes, every day, then they will miss nearly a year of their education over the course of their schooling. If they are away for one day a week… then they will end up missing over two and a half years of their education. Please make sure that your child is on time and attends school every day.

Peer Support! Peer Support will be starting this week. I cannot wait to see all of our stu-dents working together to reinforce positive relationships, connectedness and resilience across the school. Good luck to all of the lead-ers as they take on their groups on Wednes-day. Our photo below shows them hard at work in preparation.

MISS Choir! It was so lovely to hear our choir singing for the first time last week. Mrs Bingley had 27 students keen to sing, from Year 3 to Year 6, last Tuesday at lunchtime. I look for-ward to their first public performance.

Arty Smarties! This term we are lucky to have local artist Julie Stark back to run another won-derful art program. Arty Smarties will create a Poinciana Pod Parade for installation on the wire mesh near admin, followed by the crea-tion of papier-mâché sculptures. The program will run for 8 weeks during big lunch on Wednesdays. Twelve students from across the school will have the opportunity to participate. We cannot wait to see the colourful results.

Happy Days. Kacey Constantine

Prep News

It was lovely to see the Preps eager and excited to be back at school after the holi-days. I hope you were all able to enjoy spending time with your children during the holidays.

Swimming starts this week so we will need lots of helpers in the water. The more parents we can have in the pool, the more swimming practice your child will get. This also makes a big difference in building their confidence too, and they are more willing to try challenging tasks when they know there is an adult there to help them if they need it. Remember to send your child to school in his/her swimming gear (togs, sunshirt, goggles and sunscreen) as our lesson starts at 8:30am sharp. Don't forget a towel and their uniform and underwear for after-wards.

This term the children will be bringing home two reading books in their reading folders. Jodie will change the reading books on Tuesdays and Fridays. We still want parents to come in and help whenever you can. If you come on Tuesdays or Fridays you will help to change the books, but if you come on Mondays, Wednes-days or Thursdays, you will just read with the children. Please speak to Jodie or myself if you need any more information about this.

In English this term, one of the children's assessment tasks is to write a letter to a character in a story. You can help prepare your child by showing them letters that come in the mail, talking about who they are from and the different parts of the letter (like the greeting and sign off). The other English assessment task is a read-ing comprehension test. To help get them ready for this, whenever you read with your child, don't forget to ask questions about what you've been reading. Please come and see me if you'd like any more information on this.

Year 1 News

It was lovely to see all the happy Year 1 faces on my return. Thank you to Mr Powell for his great work with the class while I was away. Swimming begins on Thursday. We will attempt to change readers before swim-ming, so please let me know if you can help with this. We would welcome help with readers on Fridays also.

We will miss Ms Hilda who has done a fantastic job helping with home reading in Year 1 for over a year. Thank you for all helping us and listening to our wonderful readers.

PBL Update

Congratulations to Year 2, for being organised and ready to learn and winning our ‘Class of the Week’ award. The start to Term 4 has been positive with no major incidents in the first week of school and a posi-tive vibe around the school. Our next PBL meeting will take place this week. We will be analysing data to identify areas we can celebrate and improve on, plan the events happening this term and set goals for our behaviour targets. Watch this space for updates and the weekly foci. Year 3 News

Welcome back to the last school term for 2017! I hope you had a great holiday break. English Our first English unit this term is poetry. Students will be reading and analysing poems, writing their own poem about 'Island Community' and then presenting it. I hope you all got a chance to read their story boards from last term. Maths Our Maths unit starts with multiplication for the first couple of weeks before moving on to fractions, specifically fraction of a collection. For example 1/4 of 24=? Homework Homework has changed this term for a number of reasons. Students receive 2 sheets on a Monday morning that are glued into their new homework book (instead of their booklet in the past). One sheet is their spelling words as usual with their weekly LEM at the bottom to practise. The second sheet is an activity sheet that starts with reading (to be signed every night after reading), an English activity and Maths activity related to what they are doing in class. There is room for a comment down the bottom as well (optional). This book will be taken home every Monday afternoon and must be returned every Friday morning, completed. Thank you to all of the students and parents who came to watch and celebrate my wedding day; I had the best day! The students are definitely doing better at the name change than I am, so well done to them!

Year 2 News

Welcome back to Term 4! I hope everyone had a great time over the holidays and that we can put last term’s sickness behind us. Here are a few notes about our learning over the next 2 weeks: English: Students are exploring picture books and learning skills to help them write a new narrative event to add to a familiar story. Maths: We are currently learning about the features of 2D and 3D shapes and we will start work on collecting and displaying data later this week. Science: In Save Planet Earth we will investigate the Earth’s resources, how they are used and how we can con-serve them. Homework was handed out yesterday (Monday) and is due back each Friday. Swimming starts this week on Thursday. Remember to bring your goggles, towel, togs and sunscreen. Kitchen Garden: We need 2 or 3 volunteers for the following Fridays, all from 10.45am to 1.15pm, for cooking, gardening and clean-up: 13th October (this week), 27th October, 10th November and 24th November.

Year 4/5 News

Term 4, how exciting! We are now into our final term for the year. Now is the time for all students to be doing their best to show all of the learning they have harnessed throughout the year. Please encourage your child to give their best efforts this term, as the amount of effort they are willing to put in correlates to the results they will achieve.

English:

To begin Term 4, the students are reading and analysing the quest novel “Rowan of Rin”. The students are required to discuss the characters, settings and events from the novel as well as write a character analysis of the main character Rowan.

Maths:

This term we will be investigating 24-hour time, data collection, decimals and their rela-tionship to fractions, as well as continuing to further our mental calculation and problem solving skills.

Science:

Fast forces! Students will use games to in-vestigate and demonstrate the direction of forces and the effect of contact and non-contact forces on objects. They will use their knowledge of forces to make predictions about games and will complete games safely in order to collect data. Students will use ta-bles and column graphs to organise data and identify patterns so that find-ings can be communicated. They will identify how science knowledge of forces helps people understand the effects of their actions.

Geography

Students will conduct an inquiry to investigate ways in which waste is man-aged in our local area, and how individuals can manage waste more sustainably.

If you have any concerns or would like any further in-formation please send me an email and we can arrange a time to meet. Have a great week.

Jeremy Pullen ([email protected])

Reminders:

Swimming – Starts this Thursday (12/10/17). Students need to bring their togs, a rashie and a towel. Students may come to school in their swimmers as our lesson is in the morning session (however, please make sure your child brings their uniform to change into after swimming).

Homework – Reading 15 minutes every night, an English sheet and a Maths sheet. Due Friday morning. Our reg-ular homework club is not continuing this term. If your child requires assistance with their homework, please contact me and we can make arrangements to help them out.

Library Borrowing – Our Library session will be on Fridays. Please ensure your child brings their library bag and library books (to be returned) every Friday so they can borrow books.

Year 5/6 News

Hopefully we are mostly over our illnesses from last term. We have a very busy term ahead, with lots to be com-pleted, but also with quite a number of exciting events. It’s so hard to believe that our Year 6s have only one term of primary school to go! We have discussed the importance of making the most of this remaining time. There is still plenty of opportunity to develop and improve skills and understandings, and to set effective learning habits. We have begun work on our English unit, which requires children to analyse texts which are based on a similar topic, but which have different writing styles. The children have completed research about Southern Asian moon Bears, which we will go on to learn more about. The two texts being analysed are written about this topic, but one is a fictional picture book, and the other is a factual brochure. Children need to write an analysis which identifies how effective the author has been at presenting his/her message. Peer Support starts this week. The children are very excited about starting this program. The first session takes place on Wednesday this week, but for the rest of the year sessions will be delivered on Thursdays. Children have preparation to do each week leading up to the sessions, and should be rehearsing their language, the questions they will ask, the way to give instructions, etc.. Any help that parents and other family members can give will be fantastic for the children. This is a brilliant opportunity for our school leaders to explore, expand and reinforce their leader-ship skills, and we have already begun discussing ways these skills could be useful to the children later in life. Please be sure to contact me if you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress.

Garden News The garden has been booming with all this warmer weather, it certainly would be fantastic if we had some much needed rain but as you can see from these photos the tropical varieties of plants, pineapples, paw paws and bananas are going really well in the school garden.

These pumpkin seeds were planted just before the school holidays also we have planted some beans and passionfruit on the blue frames that Andrew kindly put up for us.
