“A Rabbit’s Day”

from a story by Irma Shoop (1913 -2005)

Mrs. (1) lived in a nest, in a hole among the roots of a big (2) , with her

four small rabbits. One morning she said, “Today we are going to a big garden near here

and I will teach you what plants are especially good to eat.” They hopped happily down

the hill, where (3) grew along the path, until they came to a (4) .

They squeezed under it and saw before them rows and rows of vegetables. They tried some

(5) and some (6) and some (7) . Then, they tried some (8) .

They thought all the food was delicious, but they were getting full! Finally, Mother said,

“Now we will try my favorite food for dessert, and then home for a nap.” She led them to

the (9) row, and each ate their fill. As they hopped along toward home, Mother

pointed out (10) s lying on the ground. She said, “Those are not rabbit food.”

Mother Rabbit sensed a movement, and sent her babies hurrying on ahead, as she knew

from experience that it might be a (11) . Sure enough, she caught a glimpse

of one, just as they arrived at the entrance to their hole. An (12) in a tree

blinked placidly as he watched the rabbits hop by. A (13) ran from branch

to branch in the tree, and (14) s flew about excitedly.

The rabbits were safe in their nest!
