Connecting to a Specific Type of Network

In general, simply clicking the main Connect button on the main window of the AT&T Global Network Client will connect you to your network using the best connectivity option available. However, there may be times when you wish to connect to a specific network, instead of letting the AT&T Global Network Client determine the best network option.

If you wish to connect using a specific type of network, just click the Connect button in the connectivity type panel for the connectivity type you want to use. For Wi-Fi connections, all hot spots in the area that can be detected will be listed, along with an indication of what type of hot spot each one is.

Wi-Fi Connections The AT&T Global Network Client is designed to support connections to both public and private Wi-Fi hotspots. If wireless is enabled on your workstation, the Wi-Fi panel will be enabled on the Main Window of the client.

By default, if there is no Ethernet connection currently available, the AT&T Global Network Client should automatically attempt to connect to an AT&T Wi-Fi or partner Wi-Fi hotspot nearby. The AT&T Global Network Client should attempt to connect using the AT&T Wi-Fi or partner Wi-Fi hotspot with the strongest signal strength first. It should then try other hotspots in order of signal strength if the previous connection attempt fails.

Associating to a Specific Wi-Fi Hotspot

If you would like to connect to a specific nearby hotspot for some reason, such as if there is no AT&T Wi-Fi or partner Wi-Fi hotspot nearby, or if you know that one of the nearby hotspots is working better than the default selection for some reason, you can pick which hotspot you wish to connect to by clicking on the Connect button in the Wi-Fi panel. You will then be shown a list of all the nearby hotspots. The currently available AT&T Wi-Fi and partner Wi-Fi hotspots will be displayed at the top of the dialog. Other available hot spots will be displayed at the bottom.

If you select one of the AT&T Wi-Fi or partner Wi-Fi hotspots and click the Connect button on this dialog, the AT&T Global Network Client will associate to the selected hotspot and perform the necessary authentication to establish your connection. If you are using a VPN account, the AT&T Global Network Client will also download your VPN configuration from the network and configure and establish your VPN connection for you at the same time.

If you select one of the other available hotspots, and if that hotspot is not encrypted, the AT&T Global Network Client will attempt to associate to the hotspot for you. If you are using a VPN account, after the association is complete, the

AT&T Global Network Client will prompt you for your password. After you enter your password, the AT&T Global Network Client will attempt to download your VPN configuration from the network and configure and establish your VPN connection for you.

If you select an available hotspot that is encrypted, the AT&T Global Network Client will prompt you for the Passphrase for that hotspot. After you enter the required login information for the hotspot and click OK the AT&T Global Network Client will attempt to associate to the hotspot, using the information you provided in this authentication attempt. If successful, and if you are using a VPN account, the AT&T Global Network Client should then prompt you for your VPN password. After you enter your password, the AT&T Global Network Client will attempt to download your VPN configuration from the network and configure and establish your VPN connection for you.

Auto Reconnect The Auto Reconnect feature offers a more seamless user experience by keeping you connected with minimal user interaction. The client will attempt to automatically connect or reconnect to the network whenever possible. Listed below are some use cases:

You launch the client and your session token is not expired or you are using saved credentials. The client will automatically attempt to connect to the network without any user.

You are traveling from one location to another. The client is running when you close your laptop while in transit. You re-open your laptop after arriving at your destination. The client will automatically reconnect.

Network roaming. The client will automatically reconnect over another available network connection if the previous network connection is lost, regardless of connection type (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Mobile).

The Auto Reconnect feature is enabled by default for all users. If it is not enabled, your Administrator may have disabled this feature.

Auto Reconnect User Overrides

If your administrator has granted access, you can modify Auto Reconnect settings. The following settings can be modified by selecting “Auto Reconnect Options” on the “Profiles” screen:

Override Defaults – Selecting this checkbox allows you to use Auto Reconnect settings that are different than your administrator’s default settings.

Automatically reconnect – Enables/Disables the Auto Reconnect feature.

Switch to attwifi or partner hotspot when in range – Enables/Disables the Auto Switch Wi-Fi feature.

Time before switching – Number of seconds the client should wait before switching to Wi-Fi when a hotspot has been detected. The purpose of this setting is to prevent the client from repeatedly prompting you if hotspots are coming in range, but only momentarily.

Minimum signal strength – Minimum hotspot signal strength required for the client to switch the connection from the mobile network to Wi-Fi.

Prompt before switching to Wi-Fi – When this checkbox is enabled, you will be prompted before the client switches your network connection. This gives you the opportunity to selectively utilize the Auto Switch Wi-Fi feature. If disabled, the client will automatically switch to Wi-Fi when the hotspot is in range, without prompting you.

Connecting Without Saving to Keychain The AT&T Global Network Client performs network configuration tasks that require administrative privileges at connect and disconnect time. Therefore, by default, the AT&T Global Network Client will create a keychain entry using your MAC OS X username and password, so that you are not prompted every time the AT&T Global Network Client connects or disconnects. If you prefer to use the AT&T Global Network Client without creating a keychain entry, deselect the “Save username and password in Keychain” checkbox.

You will be presented with MAC OS X prompts if those credentials are needed to connect or disconnect you from the network.
