AT&T ENHANCES MOBILE INTERNET COVERAGE ACROSS MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS
New Distributed Antenna System, Which is Part of AT&T’s Project VIP Investment Plan, Provides Additional Wireless Capacity on MIT Campus
CAMBRIDGE, MASS., SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 — As students, faculty and staff head back to school this
fall at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, they can expect to experience enhanced mobile
connectivity when using their wireless devices, helping them better connect with others on the campus
and complete their studies and research. AT&T* is installing a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS)
as part of an ongoing, multi-phase network investment across the campus.
A DAS installation consists of multiple strategically-placed antennas that distribute AT&T’s wireless
network coverage at MIT, providing for more efficient management of wireless capacity in heavily-
trafficked areas. DAS has the ability to provide enhanced, consistent wireless coverage to customers
in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations – terrain, building construction, etc. – or
crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience.
AT&T has completed DAS installations in over 75 buildings across the MIT campus, including the
Sloan, Pierce and Guggenheim laboratories; Tang Center; the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex;
the David H. Koch Center for Integrative Cancer Research; and dozens of academic and laboratory
buildings, student housing and athletic facilities. Additional buildings are in progress and more are
being planned.
The MIT DAS installation is part of AT&T’s Project Velocity IP (VIP), a multi-year plan to invest for
growth, announced in 2012. Through this investment, AT&T is supporting its customers’ growing desire
for high-quality, fast wireless and wired services. As part of Project VIP, AT&T is deploying small cell

technology, macro cells and additional DAS, which will increase the density of our wireless network.
The wireless network densification will further improve network quality and increase spectrum
efficiency.
“We know MIT students and faculty rely on a fast, reliable network to power their connections, studies
and groundbreaking research, and we’re committed to providing the MIT community with a great
network experience,” said Patricia Jacobs, President, AT&T New England. “With initiatives like Project
VIP, we’re continuing to investment in the wireless network, and providing enhanced wireless coverage
at MIT is just one way that we’re investing in Cambridge and the renowned universities located here.”
DAS technology helps improve the mobile Internet experience by shortening the distance a request
must travel. The additional capacity also is expected to help improve call reliability, boost data traffic
capacity and enable more consistent network access on the college campus, helping students and
faculty make the most of their AT&T devices.
