Breaking Up WordsSegmenting

 

Materials: Breaking Up Word Boards 

Provide each student with a Breaking Up Words board with the same picture. Say the name of the picture, have thestudents repeat the word, and prompt them to separate the sounds of the word while pointing to each circle on the card After separating the sounds, repeat the word while moving a finger along the green line. 

Race Car BlendingBlending

 

Materials: Race Car Boards, Race Cars 

Provide each student with the same race card board and a race car. Tell the students that they will be blending soundsinto words using the race car. Have the students place their car at the beginning of the strip. As the car moves slowlyacross each letter, stretch out the letter sound. Repeat several times saying the sounds faster each time.

Teacher: Place your car at the beginning of the word. Let’s move the cars slowly over each letter as we saythe sound. 

Teacher/Students: /sssssss/ (moving across the s), /uuuuuu/ (moving across the u), /nnnnnn/ (moving acrossthe n). Now let’s do it again, but a little faster (sssuuuunnn). Repeat several times until saying the word at anear normal pace. 

Note: The purpose of this activity is to blendsounds together. Students may not have yetmastered all the letter sounds, therefore, you may

need to provide the sounds to the letters on thecard. 

Teacher: This is a cat. Say “cat”. Now let’s separate the sounds. 

Teacher/Students: /k/ (touching a circle), /a/ (touching a circle), /t/ (touching a circle), “cat” (moving finger alongthe green line). 

 As the students become more proficient, decrease the amount of prompting.
