James ScottI/hen the Rhodesian Prime Minister, lan Smith, dedaub UDI in 1965, his defiant standagainst black majority rule marked the beginning of the end for his country. The fifteen

years of bloodshed that followed brought the deadly bush war to the heart of the capitalcity, Salisbury, and the last line of defence, the BSA Police Svat teams —'TheSweaties'. The Sweaties is a novel of war. It recounts in merciless detail the horror ofCommunist-backed terrorism, leading to a dimactic showdown between a terrorist duobent on committing the ultimate ability and the Polite, desperate to locate and destroythem before it's too late.

The A~orJames Scott joined the Rhodesian British South Africa Police in 1967 and served in theunitormed branch until 1980, when the country achieved independence. He saw activeservice in all parts of the countIy, eventually retiring with 5e rank of Inspector. He nowlives in Johannesburg.

1946 had been an eventful year, from the Royal Navy and war-weary Britain, tothe vast continent of Africa, and an exciting job with a famous Police Force. It was anopen air life, with vivid, unfamiliar incidents, and generous and cheery friendships.'I 947 was also full of interest: adventurous patrols in the Chiweshe Reserve, duty with

the Royal Tour, relief transfers to Victoria Falls and Mtoko, and my eventual elevationto Trooper-in-Charge of my own remote station, Sipolilo, 1947 was a momentousyear for our staff - they were now 'African' instead of 'Native' Constables, and theirsandals were replaced with prestigious boots, socks and puttees!
