I was in daily contact with a fellow from

I riend I'eogh got hold of me one fine

My first contact was - heavens should I

anyv, ay it was tall Hoppy Hopkins, a

snooker ace and frequenter of the said pub

Not only did he confirm the story but he

had also caught the spook. Hoppy assuredme that his leaders Mike Lindley and PeterHuson had fiill knowledge and that he had

had assistance from the Bulawayo Museum

to capture this apparition

Other sources and patrons of the pub con-firmed and earnestly believed„yes, an evil

demon resided behind the bar and if youstayed till last call on stormy dark nights-not many did - you could hear thistroubled, tormented soul thrash aboutsomewhere behind the bar, Many boldtroopers ventured to capture the spook but

all failed until Hoppy decided that it wastime to bring an end to the copscapades ofthe thing, Bar losses were up, not in theliquid beverage tally but in the miscellane-

ous - crisps and Mars bars - and I/C Cen-

tral held sleuth Hoppy responsible or else.

%Veil„ the Museum provided a steel traplarge enough to capture the Hound of theBaskervilles. Baited correctly, sure enough

the next morning the 'Copscabana Spook'was there, behind bars, in all his glory. Itwas a monster of a cane rat, and this fellow

had obviously sneaked past the A/C on the

gate and, exhibiting good taste, took up

lodgings at the nearest inn,

To agree to the release of such a storyappealed to the irresponsible side of me

and I did so without further reference toanyone. Whys I was a decision-maker aswell, Only crisis matters get referred up the

Before the arrival of DNA comparison andfacial mapping policemen like us relied onmore Iundamental skills to crack cases, bethey Inurder or petty theft. This is illus-trated in 3749 Stanley Edwards' story ofthe solving of poultry thefts in Mrewa in

the days when he was stationed at Mtoko.

"We are all familiar with the door-to-doorvendors ot chickens carried in a basket otmsasa cuttings bound with bark rope, oftenon a bicycle carrier. Camped for the nightin the bush, the vendors would release theirchickens at sundown, feed them a fewgrains and give them a short break tostretch their cramped legs and scratcharound free range. As darkness fell thehens would scramble back into their cageto spend the night sal'e from any prowlingjackal.

One of our A. P. dropped in on one ol'theovernight encampments of Atricans travel-ling on foot and bicycle to their homes inNyasaland. He observed that one suchflock, on release, had taken to the treeswhere they obstinately remained. Theywere obvious strangers and 1'urther exami-nation showed that they were not the oldkraal huku A conviction followed and theMrewa poultry thet'ts ceased. Bright boy !

We then vvent on to John Rowley'sdaughtcfs house nl t. Ilfk, aboUt 3 nlllcsaway v here we stayed the night afteran excellent meal in the local Pub.

The meeting consisted of PalestinePolice, Venya Police, Hong VongPolice, Northern Rhodesia and our-selves from B.S.A.P. This has been theformat for some time now as the num-bers are dwindling with the passage oftime. It is 52 years since thc PP wasdlsbanrlcd, Bnd thc olgBnlscl' was Bn 85years young. There were approxi-mately 100 people present.

A more than adequate Ineal wasserved followed by a raf lie with about16 prizes, of which about 14 were abottle of whisky, much mingling andrenewing of old friendships followeduntil everyone went home about5,30pm,

Wc occupied thc cvcn lug byv;atching the TV programme on Zim-babwe featuring "You can't move meMugabe". It was interesting to see Pe-ter Hain M. P. who has done a U turnand now is not best of friends withMugabe (we told him in the seventiesthat he was wrong).

It was Friday the 19'" May and 43 ofthe Faithful obeyed the summons to theVictory Services Club for the ACJM.Strangely not all found their wayunemngly to the private bar. Preliminary socialising at the bar(when all eventually managed to gatherthere) was transformed into thecustomary pattern of the ACJM, withChairman Brian Gibbs presenting hisannual report. He paid richly deservedtribute to several, including0 Our Almoner, Bill EarleO Adrienne Gibbs for her work in
