FIRST READING: Acts 4:32-35. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 118. RESPONSE: Give praise to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. 1. Let the house of Israel say, ‘His mercy endures forever’. Let the house of Aaron say, ‘His mercy endures forever’. Let those who fear the Lord say, ‘His mercy endures forever’. 2. The Lord’s right hand has done mighty deeds; his right hand is exalted. The Lord’s right hand has done mighty deeds’. I shall not die, I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord punished me, punished me severely, but did not hand me over to death. 3. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done, a marvel I our eyes. this is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad. SECOND READING: 1 John 5:1-7. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia. You believed, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. Alleluia. GOSPEL: John 20:19-31. COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Take your hand and feel the place of the nails, and be no longer doubtful but believing, alleluia. I t is said that talk is cheap. We may use the language of love, thinking that we really love someone and that our love is reciprocated. But if there is serious disagreement, a row, a betrayal or a denial, then we can sulk, reproach or reject that person. Love can die. We say “I must move on”, “It’s all over between us”. The Resurrection of Jesus is a powerful statement that God’s love does not die; God’s love does not sulk; God’s love does not reproach or recriminate. God goes on loving – through rejection and sin – into a new level of existence all together. If God’s love is more powerful even than death, then it is more powerful than sin, than all possible sin. Hence it makes perfect sense for the Risen Christ to breathe on his apostles and say to them “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven” (John 20: 22,23). The Risen Jesus does not ask his disciples why he was betrayed, why he was repudiated, why most of them had kept well out of sight on the Friday of the Passion. Rather, the merciful grace of Easter is expressed in the repeated greeting: “Peace be with you”. In the great Jubilee of Mercy which we celebrated a few years ago we got a hint of the limitless nature of God’s loving mercy: the Jubilee is over but the mercy continues: an endless torrent of love expressed in forgiveness and peace. A significant feature of God’s enduring love is that once we have truly experienced that love in the context of mercy, we cannot but become merciful ourselves, even and especially to those who have betrayed or denied us. Forgiven, we become forgivers. This is how God forges a merciful world, through a merciful Church, in a merciful faith community. Little by little a civilization of love takes shape to the glory of God. Mercy received must result in mercy shown to others. While we may wax lyrical about the love of God never faltering, we are schooled by our Christian tradition and by Jesus himself to * feed the hungry * give drink to the thirsty * welcome the stranger * clothe the naked * visit the sick * assist prisoners. In plain words, mercy must be rooted in our daily lives. It must influence how we treat those who have let us down; it must influence how we respond to those in need; it must reveal the presence of God in those around us. The love of God expressed as the merciful grace of Easter is translated for us by St Paul in unambiguous ways: “Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offence and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth” (I Corinthians 13). It is said that talk is cheap. We may use the language of love, thinking that we really love someone and that our love is reciprocated.

But if there is serious disagreement, a row, a betrayal or a denial, then we can sulk, reproach or reject that person. Love can die. We say “I must move on”, “It’s all over between us”.

The Resurrection of Jesus is a powerful s t a t e m e n t t h a t God’s love does not die; God’s love does not sulk; God’s love does not reproach or recriminate.

A signif icant feature of God’s enduring love is

that once we have truly experienced that love in the context of mercy, we cannot but become merciful ourselves, even and especially to those who have betrayed or denied us. Forgiven, we

become forgivers.This is how God

forges a merciful world, through a merciful Church, i n a m e r c i f u l faith community. Lit t le by l i t t le a civilization of love takes shape to the glory of God.

Mercy received mus t re su l t i n mercy shown to others. While we may wax lyr ical about the love of

God never faltering, we are schooled by our Christian tradition and by Jesus himself to

* feed the hungry* give drink to the thirsty* welcome the stranger* clothe the naked* visit the sick* assist prisoners. In plain words, mercy must be rooted in our

daily lives. It must influence how we treat those who have let us down; it must influence how we respond to those in need; it must reveal the presence of God in those around us.
