Our Baptism, like the Lord’s, is a consecration to service. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reminds us that “… there is a fundamental obligation arising from the Sacrament of Baptism that people place their gifts, their resources —their selves— at God’s service in and through the Church.”

Saint Matthew’s story of the baptism of Jesus is an appropriate scripture reading to reflect on our own baptism. Jesus’ baptism has been understood as a symbol of his death. Baptism is the sacrament by which we die to an old life of sin and enter a new life of grace. We “put on Christ.” To be a good steward of one’s baptism means to accept that one has new life in the risen Lord and is willing to be guided by the life of Jesus. As the New Year begins to unfold, reflect on the meaning of your own baptism, and how you might make an even deeper commitment to a new life in Christ Jesus.

The Baptism of the Lord Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29; Acts 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

Baptism is the beginning of the spiritual life which finds its fullness in the Church. At the favorable moment of the sacrament, while the ecclesial community is praying and entrusting to God a new son or daughter, parents and godparents commit themselves to welcoming the newly baptized, sustaining them in Christian formation and education. This is a great responsibility which comes from a great gift! Therefore, I desire to encourage all the faithful to rediscover the beauty of being baptized and of belonging to the large family of God, and to give a joyful witness of their faith so that this faith may produce fruits of good and harmony. Let us ask this through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians, to whom we entrust the parents who are preparing for their children’s Baptism, as well as the catechists. The entire community participates in the joy of rebirth in water and in the Holy Spirit!

ANNUAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS Our Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski and the Office of Marriage and Family Life invite all couples in the Archdiocese of Miami celebrating their 25th or 50th and above wedding anniversaries this year to join us for a special Mass on World Marriage Day February 16th 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral. El Bautismo del Señor Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Sal 29; He 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

El Bautismo es el inicio de la vida espiritual, que encuentra su plenitud por medio de la Iglesia. En la hora propicia del sacramento, mientras la comunidad eclesial reza y encomienda a Dios un nuevo hijo, los padres y los padrinos se comprometen a acoger al recién bautizado sosteniéndolo en la formación y en la educación cristiana. Es una gran responsabilidad, que deriva de un gran don. Por esto, deseo alentar a todos los fieles a redescubrir la belleza de ser bautizados y pertenecer así a la gran familia de Dios, y a dar testimonio gozoso de la propia fe, a fin de que esta fe produzca frutos de bien y de concordia. Lo pedimos por intercesión de la santísima Virgen María, Auxilio de los cristianos, a quien encomendamos a los padres que se están preparando al Bautismo de sus hijos, al igual que a los catequistas. Que toda la comunidad participe de la alegría del renacimiento del agua y del Espíritu Santo.

MISA ANUAL DE ANIVERSARIOS DE BODAS de PLATA, ORO y MÁS El Arzobispo Thomas G. Wenski y la Oficina de Matrimonio y Vida Familiar invitan a todos los matrimonios de la Arquidiócesis de Miami celebrando sus 25, 50 o más años de matrimonio en el 2014 a participar en una Misa especial que celebrará el Día Mundial del Matrimonio, 16 de febrero del 2014, a las 3:00pm en la Catedral de St. Mary. Nosotros “representamos a Cristo.” Ser buen corresponsable de nuestro bautismo significa aceptar que tenemos una nueva vida en el Señor resucitado y estamos dispuestos a ser guiados por la vida de Jesús. Al empezar a develarse el nuevo año, reflexione sobre el significado de su propio bautismo, y sobre cómo podría usted hacer un compromiso aún más profundo a una nueva vida en Cristo Jesús.
