Every neighbourhood has one – some with a view of the Acropolis; others, right on the water and still others surrounded by per- fumed gardens that fill the sultry evening with the quintessential Greek fragrance of orange blossoms and jasmine. With over 60 open-air cinemas to choose from in Attica alone, it is a Greek summer tra- dition that is truly alive and well. Having survived the crisis and real-estate devel- opers, summer cinemas - with their direc- tor’s chairs and their compelling aroma of crackling popcorn - are a truly democratic space, where you can sip on a frappe, knock back a couple of beers, snack, cool off with ice-creams and even smoke while propping up your feet on the seats ahead. Here’s a round-up Insider’s favourite sum- mer cinemas: Cine Flisvos: For a fun evening by the sea, Cine Flisvos is a great open-air op- tion where you can have a long walk on the marina’s promenade admiring the yachts. An added plus is easy parking and several after-movie drinks and dinner op- tions in the Flisvos Marina complex. Cine Flisvos, Parko Flisvou, Palaio Faliro. Tel: 210.982.1256 Cine Paris: Urban legend has it that it was a Greek hairdresser who named the outdoor cinema after her beloved Paris. It briefly closed down in the late ‘60s before re-opening again in 1986. It has been re- galing movie fans since with Greek and international hits. Located in the Plaka, it is a beloved of tourists and Athenians alike and has retained its magical old- world charm. Cine Paris, Kidathinaion 22, Plaka. Tel: 210.322.2071, 210.324.8057 Dexameni: So named after the cistern that it sits on that once supplied water to all of Athens, Dexameni square is a cool, green city-square with an open-air cinema that has an island-like look and feel. With white-washed cobbled pavements, laby- rinthine alleys and cascading bougainvil- lea, Dexameni is a great setting to spend a lazy, hazy, crazy summer evening. Voted by CNN’s Hoishan Chan as ‘the best movie-theatre in the world for being as interesting as the mov- ies it shows’, Cine Thissio has a majestic view of the floodlit Acropolis and is located just a few hundred meters down the pe- destrian path from the ancient Herodus Atticus theatre. The island is a quiet, calm and mesmerising hidden gem that we are reluctant to even share! Must See and Do: If the weather permits, we recommend booking one of the dozens of day boat tours available from the port of Adamas. The tours depart daily around 9am and take you to a plethora of coves and beaches that are only accessible via boat. One of our favourites is Kleftiko--a majestic rock formation with incredible underwater life and scenery. Legend has it that Kleftiko was a pirate hideway for treasure (which has yet to be found)! Dive off the boat into the clear, sparkling water to partake in your own treasure hunt. Insid- er’s tip: Buy an underwater camera case from Adamas before setting off on your boat tour, you will thank us later. For the adventurous types looking for a bit of an ‘off the beaten path’ Indiana Jones type of adventure or if you’re just seeking haven from the meltemi winds, Tsigrado beach on the South East side of the island is an Insider favourite and best-kept island secret. The clear, turquoise water, white sandy beach, and little coves and caves here are an absolute must-see. The beach is accessible via a stabilised rope and small wooden ladder built into the side of a cliff. Insider’s tip: Do get there early as this tiny cove fills up fast, do bring water and snacks to sustain your day in the sun and finally wear trainers if possible--it will make your climb down the mountain much easier. The miniature, traditional and colourful ‘Syrmata’ boathouses of Mandrakia in the North West side of the island are absolute- ly picturesque and a must-see. The lunar-esque rock formations of Sara- kiniko, in the North part of the island, are literally reminiscent of the moon and prob- ably the most visited beach on the island. Insider’s tip: Take a journey through all the tiny little caves and grottos built into the rock formations and then go for a quick swim in the sea. Make sure to bring your camera! Looking to have a relaxing cocktail with a panoramic view of the sun setting directly into the sea? Utopia Cafe in Plaka is the perfect place to wind down after a long day in the sun. Insider’s Tip: Make sure you get there at 7pm if possible to get the best table on the veranda just in time for the sunset. Insider’s favourites: Stay at Hotel del Mar in Pollonia in the Northeast side of the island, their hospitality is second to none, they are absolute island experts and multilingual. Every expedition ends with a visit to her mother, Poppy, whose ageing mind is deteriorating. Four expeditions and the old lady, each respected, attended to, carefully and unsentimentally described and estimated. So what are the things found? Well, sow thistles, hartwort, wild artichokes, dandelions, the pikralis, the sheep-radhiki and the king of them all, the red rhadiki; the knowledge, the easy certainty of Penny’s guides and mentors; and the ability to see the prized weeds not just on picturesque and photogenic hillsides but, better, in the churned earth of thistle-grown fields where the tractors have been. Meanwhile Poppy remembers flashes of her Rhodesian youth, school, the shop, marriage; she mourns her dead cat, worries about her music – and, more and more, loses words and sentences. The paradox is that the detail, the humane vividness and honest clarity of Penny’s ac- count of her mother declining, makes a path back into a sense of her mother as she was, whole and undeclined. This is a book of plain prose with a poetic sense of what it is to be mortal: that’s the finding. Found Things by Penny Apostolidou, avail- able at Politeia bookshop, 1-3 Asklepiou street. politeianet.gr Found Things is a poignant commentary about time, the love of place, about wild- ness, learning and losing. This slim book, published by Foinikas, recounts in frugal prose four expeditions in the hills of the Greek Argolid to gather wild greens and the decline of the writer’s mother’s health. In the author Penny Apostolidou’s words, “It is a mosaic of seemingly unrelated sub- jects written in a style and form that is as unusual as the concurrence of the stories which it narrates.” Apart from being a pow- erful narrative of a mother-daughter rela- tionship and of decline and bereavement, over will be glued to their TV screens at strange hours of the night to relive the magic of football for a month. It will also test the theory that so far all four World Cups staged in South America have only been won by South American teams.
