  • We’re glad you’re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.” At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community.

If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast.

NurseryOur nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. Nursery is also available on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance.

ChildrenWorship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children’s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children’s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays.

Sunday SchoolWe offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45–10:45 a.m. Children’s Sunday School (kindergarten-grade 4) is located on the third floor of the building. Classes for students in grades 5–12 meet on the first floor. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/adultsundayschool.

ConnectIf you would like to find out more about our church or are interested in becoming a member, we invite you to attend our Newcomer Orientation every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. Visit athensfirstumc.org/thesteeple to sign up for our weekly newsletter, the eSteeple. You can also connect with us via social media. Find us @athens_firstumc on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Our church office is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. If you need assistance, please call 706-543-1442.

We thank you God for our mothers, and for those who were like mothers to us—those who nurtured and supported us, and enabled us to grow and mature in faithfulness.

We thank you for those who have been like mothers to children not their own, offering unconditional love and guidance to the children in their midst.

We thank you for the gift of creativity that you planted within us, men and women alike, that enable us by your spirit to give birth to a new creation.

We pray for those who are mothers, for the joy and challenge of their vocation; may you grant them courage and grace to parent to the best of their ability, knowing that even our best efforts fall short, but are redeemed by your grace and forgiveness.

We also join our hearts with those for whom today is a day of grief and mourning: those who have lost their mothers, or who are estranged from their mothers; those who are struggling with reproductive loss, for whom motherhood is a hope yet denied.

O God of compassion, who took on our earthly frame and shared our sufferings in Jesus of Nazareth, send your healing spirit upon us all, and empower us to deal tenderly with one another.

    In your Holy Name, Amen.

thank youThank you to all who participated in the Great Day of Service and the Brunch/Basket Auction! Your contribution is a blessing for our church and will make a difference in the lives of many families who live in the Athens community. Since groups began contributing to this weekend early in the week, it truly was a great “week” of service! Take a look at the activities and projects completed throughout the week:

    • The sanctuary was deep cleaned• Walls were constructed in the Bigger Vision Homeless Shelter dorm• Clothes were sorted and closets constructed at The Sparrow’s Nest• Volunteers created a community garden at The Salvation Army • Mercy Health Center received a new “curb appeal” • Study Rooms were created for the Action Ministries GED Program• 50 Health Care Kits were assembled for United Methodist Committee on Relief

tornado victims• 200 Health Care Kits were assembled for Project Safe • 600 lunch sacks were assembled for Smart Lunch, Smart Kids • 400+ chairs were cleaned in Hancock Hall and Hull Dining Room• The gym bleachers and concessions area were cleaned• The altar area was polished• Stairwell railings, chair rails, and baseboards were cleaned with Clorox wipes • Centerpieces were created, silverware was rolled, tables were set, and

Hancock Hall was transformed on Saturday for Sunday’s Celebration Brunch• Food was prepared in the kitchen and folks met new friends

    • Baskets were organized throughout the day for folks to bid on and purchase on Sunday

A commencement ceremony for the Action Ministries GED graduates of 2013 concluded the weekend. I cannot think of a better way to end this great week of coming together to serve God through Athens First United Methodist Church. Many thanks! Love, Rev. Betsy Butler

Jesus and Donuts | May 21Hi, my name is Amelia Wilson. I would like to invite you to spend Wednesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. with Jesus and me at Ike and Jane’s. We will be reading and discussing daily devotionals from Dear Jesus by Sarah Young, the author of Jesus Calling. I felt moved to lead this study while sitting in the DMV. Usually, waiting at the DMV is frustrating; however, as I sat there I read Dear Jesus and I was overwhelmed by how rarely I sit for more than 15 minutes to talk to God. Dear Jesus is a great book of short devotionals that help to calm and focus the spirit on a daily basis. Visit athensfirstumc.org/registration to register. Materials for this study are $14.
