WelcomeWe are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

AttendancePlease let us know of your attendance this morning by completing the pew pad.

The Worship of God PRELUDE

“I Heard the Voice of Jesus” | Horatius Bonar

CALL TO WORSHIPBetsy ButlerPsalm 23 | p. 474 old testamentThe Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. The Lord makes me lie down in green pastures, leads me beside still waters, restores my life, leads me in right paths for the sake of the Lord’s name.Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.

*CONFESSION A ND PAR DONPrayer of ConfessionMost merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Pardon and Congregational ResponseIn the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God. Amen.

Prelude LyricsI heard the voice of Jesus

say, "Come unto Me and rest; lay down, thou

weary one, lay down your head upon my

breast." I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn

and sad; I found in Him a resting-place, and He

has made me glad. I heard the voice of Jesus

say, "Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty

one, stoop down and drink and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank of that

life-giving stream. My thirst was quenched, my

soul revived, and now I live in Him.

H Y MN OF PREPAR ATION umh 581 “Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service” | beach springLord, whose love through humble service bore the weight of human need, who upon the cross, forsaken, offered mercy's perfect deed: we, your servants, bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart, consecrating to your purpose every gift that you impart.

Still your children wander homeless; still the hungry cry for bread; still the captives long for freedom; still in grief we mourn our dead. As, O Lord, your deep compassion healed the sick and freed the soul, use the love your Spirit kindles still to save and make us whole.

SACR A MENT OF HOLY COMMU NIONMatthew 26:17-19, 26-29

Receiving of the Elements of CommunionAt Athens First United Methodist Church, all are invited to commune at Christ’s table. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. Gluten-free communion elements are available at the center station in the front of the sanctuary.

Song LyricsFast from the swelling darkness, feast on the power of his light. Fast from discontentment,

feast on the joy that he brings. Sustainer, Protector, the Well

of Life, my helper, my comfort, the Bread of Life is you. Fast from

the feast that haunts us, feast on the power of his might. Fast from the trap of judgment, feast on all

that’s been redeemed. From the sorrow’s

shadow to perfect light. From the darkness of

our doubt to a cleansing white. From the sorrow’s

shadow to perfect light. From the blindness of our

sin to healing sight.

*THE CALL TO CONFESSION A ND PR AY ER OF CONFESSIONBetsy ButlerThe proof of God’s amazing love is this: while we were sinners, Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence, trusting that God will forgive our sin and cleanse us from every kind of wrong. Let us confess our sins to Almighty God. God of compassion, in Jesus Christ you did not disdain the company of sinners, but welcomed them with love. Look upon us in mercy, we pray. Our sins are more than we can bear; our pasts enslave us; our misdeeds are beyond correcting. Forgive the wrongs we cannot undo; free us from a past we cannot change; heal what we can no longer fix. Grace our lives with your love, and turn the tears of our past into the joys of new life with you. Amen.

Silent prayer

*THE DECL AR ATION OF FORGIV ENESSThe saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we, free from sins, might live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

Palm SundaySunday, April 9 | 8:30, 9:45, & 11:00 a.m.On Palm Sunday, the Children’s Music Ministry and Sunday school will lead us in the procession of the palms. The Sanctuary Choir will present Michael John Trotta’s “Seven Last Words” in all three worship services. Accompanied by an orchestra, the choir will express through music the complex tapestry of emotions (forgiveness, hopefulness, compassion, yearning, despair, acceptance, and resignation) that Jesus experienced in his crucifixion.

Maundy ThursdayThursday, April 13 | 7:00 p.m.On Maundy Thursday, we will commemorate the last supper of Jesus with his disciples by observing a service of Holy Communion followed by a service of Tenebrae, which will include the stripping of the altar and the extinguishing of light. Worshipers will leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ's death and await the coming Resurrection. We invite children to take communion with their families before exiting the sanctuary and going to the chapel for an age-appropriate experience of Jesus’ last week on earth. Childcare will be available for children age 4 and under.

Good FridayFriday, April 14 | 12:00 p.m.On Good Friday, we will take time to remember and reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus in a service that features the reading of the passion narrative and a musical interpretation of the Passion. Childcare is available for children age 4 and under.

Easter SundaySunday, April 16
