1. INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAINING COURSE IN CYPRUS The first Smart-Grid Training Sessions (deliverables of WP 5.2, WP5.3) took place at the

University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus Island. The trainings lasted a month in duration,

starting from 04/02/2019 to 01/03/2019. In total, 33 + 18 trainees (a total of 51 trainees)

attended the UCY Smart-Grids training in Cyprus. One of them, Ibrahim, attended the course

by his own funding resources. According to participants overall excellent performance, the

student’s high-grade exam achievements, their early arriving at UCY at each training day and

their good evaluations of the training I am delighted to announce that the UCY training has

achieved its initial goals: To provide the Basics in Smart-Grid Power Systems with

Renewables integration (mostly PV technologies, as it lies perfectly within the FOSS PV

laboratory’s expertise and knowledge). Participants will also attend another one-month

training in Newcastle university as well as a 2-week training course in Wuppertal Institute,

both oriented also in Smart-Grid Technologies.

In what follows, one can find information about the number of trainees, the training

duration, training material (lectures, seminars, laboratories), final exams, visits, certifications

of attendances.

2. TRAINEES AND DATES The training itself consisted of 2 Sessions. Analytically:

The first Session lasted from 04/02/2019 to 15/02/2019 (Duration: 2 Weeks). Trainees

attended the first Session as follows:

From 04/02/2019 to 08/02/2019 we had 33 people attending (Professors,

Researchers)

From 11/02/2019 to 15/02/2019 we had 24 people attending (Researchers)

The 9 professors only attended the first week, 04/02/2019 to 08/02/2019, while researchers

were with us for both weeks: 04/02/2019 to 15/02/2019.

The second Session lasted from 18/02/2019 to 01/03/2019 (Duration: 2 Weeks). Trainees

attended the second Session as follows:

From 18/02/2019 to 22/02/2019 we had 18 people attending (Professors,

Researchers)

From 25/02/2019 to 01/03/2019 we had 11 people attending (Researchers)

The 7 professors only attended the first week, 18/02/2019 to 22/02/2019, while researchers

were with us for both weeks: 18/02/2019 to 01/03/2019.

3. TRAINING MATERIAL FOSS Laboratory of the University of Cyprus is specialized in PV technology. The central topic

of UCY trainings were PV technologies integration in Smart Grids, PV systems, Smart Grid

considerations and Design of a micro-Grid with renewables in general. Three complementary

seminars (on Battery energy storage systems, DigSilent Power Factory, Smart charging of an

electric car) also took place. In-situ experiments, utilizing Smart Grids software (OPENMUC

Platform for Smart-Grid Design, SMA PV system design) and PV installation and Site Survey

(hands-on) training were given a special emphasis on the scopes of UCY trainings. To

understand in detail the training Topics, see below a template for the training agenda

3.1 Trainings description and methodology

UCY trainings involved theoretical, practical and evaluation methods. Analytically, the first

week was devoted to Smart Gids, starting from basic principles (AC Circuits, circuit

topologies, converters, inverters, transformers, AC Power flow, Power lines, One-line

diagrams) to advanced PV Grid Inregrations (Modelling Power systems such as inverters,

converters, transformers and power lines with PV integration). Methodology included

Design of an integrated 1 MW PV system micro-grid using ideal converters, inverters and

transformers with additional energy storage (BESS) connected to a Power Grid (13.2 Kv, Low

voltage distribution). Trainees practiced their skills on designing such a system by calculating

all the bus voltages, number of PV arrays, converters and inverters ratings, number of

Battery arrays and buck-boost converters and give the one-line diagram of such a

connectivity. In addition, Smart Power Grids principles and properties were properly

analyzed (EMS: Energy Management System, SCADA: Supervisory Control and Data

Acquisition, CBF: Cyber Fusion points of Smart Grids, Voltage and Frequency control by

governor, synchronized power terminology, and Power flow through Power lines).

Software simulations (PVSYST, SMA PV DESIGN, OPENMUC) for both PV Design and Smart-

Grid Design were also used to enhance the implementation of knowledge during the first-

week trainings. All training material has been disseminated to trainees with the scope of 1:

Study in greater detail and 2: Utilize this material to their home institutions to develop

specialized trainings for the Syrian, Jordanian, Moroccan students)

During the second week, attendees had the chance to learn about Smart Charging of Electric

car and future development concepts, and PV technologies from beginning: Solar Irradiation

theory, PV technologies: characteristics, the Photovoltaic phenomenon and how it works,

Smart Homes: Thermal considerations (U-Values and Thermal Capacity calculation

methodologies), Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings in Cyprus: The future, Building-integrated

Photovoltaics and Building-Applied Photovoltaics, Health and Safety during PV installations,

PV Power components characteristics (The inverter, DC Cables, Charge Controller, ByPass

and Blocking Diodes, Battery Storage, Fusion Boxes, MCBs), Irradiance measurement

components (The pyranometer, pyrheliometer), local environmental stations and

forecasting techniques. In addition, in-situ hands-on experiments included: PV diseases (PID,

LID, Hotspots, Delamination and generic faults) thermal camera, Electroluminescence

technique, solar flasher and the environmental chamber.

system installation, electrical inter-connections between PV modules and connection to the

inverter (Located at the back-side of the tile-roof)!

The training ended with a final exam on the previous Topics, already evaluated and results

have been disseminated to participants. The exam focused mainly on the theoretical part of

the training, with Power Grid Design, PV technologies and Smart Homes being the main

focus. In what follows, the exam statistics are shown per University (1st Group!):

4. VISITS AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES The PV Laboratory organized a tour in old Nicosia city for all the participants.

New Library (just opened 2 months ago) was properly utilized by students and

professors, with a tour taking place as well.

PV Technology tour took place, informing participants about our work and Vision,

introducing also our PV equipment!

5. CERTIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE All participants have been received a certification of attendance, in recognition of their

efforts to participate in UCY trainings. Certifications are all signed (some of them also

stamped upon request) by the director of PV Technology Laboratory Dr. George Georghiou.

6. TRAINING MATERIALS Materials involving (Lectures, Laboratories, Exam, Exam evaluations, Participants Lists,

Evaluation Questionnaires, Agendas, References and Books for further reading have been

shared with all partners and with NewCastle University. Especially Laboratory Sessions could

serve as a cornerstone for the future development of specialized Smart-Grid Labs in our

partners’ home institutions.

7. STUDENTS INTEREST FOR FUTURE COLLABORATION WITH PV

LABORATORY A considerable number of students showed interest to continue their Master or PhD studies

at the PV Laboratory of the University of Cyprus. We were very pleased to see students

showing their interest towards PV Technologies, and they are preparing now a report to be

evaluated by George E. Georghiou, director of the PV laboratory. Reports shall be evaluated,

and a selection process will take place.
