Sydney Primary Schools Debating Challenge Congratulations to the Wattles Debating Team who won their Semi Final debate against Bexley North Public School! The topic was 'That space exploration is a waste of time', with BHPS debating as the negative team. With only an hour and a half to prepare, the students demonstrated exceptional debating skills, and worked cohesively as a team. Thank you to the audience and to the family members who came along to support our competing students. The Wattles have now progressed to the Preliminary Finals. We wish them the best of luck in their next debate! Miss Hill & Mrs Nicholls

Photos and Images taken at School Events With the recent Athletics Carnival it was evident that a number of parents were taking photographs. We consistently stress to parents they cannot take images of children other than their own without approval from the parents/carers of those children. They also cannot post these images on Social Media without parental approval. Hence our comment for any school event that photos should only be taken by parents/carers of their own children. Please respect the privacy of others in our school environment.
Stage 3 News Stage 3 students have experienced a rotation of classes in STEM with short, fun and frequent activities exploring flight and wind power, whilst linking and applying their understanding of the Science programs -‐ Essential Energy and It’s Electrifying. The focus is on developing the following skills: • Critical, creative and reflective thinking • Understanding the design process • ‘Flearning’, having a growth mindset, resilience • Cooperation and teamwork
The design process looked at creating models of paper planes, hoop flyers, taketombo and boomerangs. Stage 3 students enjoyed their recent excursion to the Seymour Centre to watch a stage performance of the text, ‘Thai-‐Riffic’ by Oliver Phommavanh. The text and the performance explore the themes of belonging and identity through the eyes of the main character, nicknamed Lengy. He is an Australian born twelve year old, who wrestles with accepting his Thai cultural background. Lengy lives with his family who own a Thai restaurant called Thai-‐Riffic. The lighthearted comedy is filled with the deepening connection to his Thai culture and the acceptance of his identity as an Australian.
A big congratulations to the Wattle Debating Team, who won their debate against Bexley Public School. They move closer to the finals in the Sydney Region Debating Competition. Olivia, Breanne, James and Le-‐Anna will compete next week in another debate, with only one and a half hours of preparation. The Stage 3 Public Speaking competition will continue on to Week 7 for the Stage Finals. The Stage 3 students have been working with their Kindergarten buddies, to help them construct their own speech. It has been exciting to watch the Kinder Buddies grow in confidence through all the excitement of coaching and the sharing of ideas. Stage 3 students are currently exploring the roles of a digital citizen, to understand the responsible ways of using technology and to critically analyse the use of social media, their digital footprint and how to stay safe online. The Police Youth Liaison Officer will be rescheduling her talk to our students and parents later this term. We have implemented the new Geography syllabus this semester, with a focus on the diverse characteristics of places in different local and global locations, whilst identifying the factors influencing the interconnection between people, places and the environment. We are looking forward to the Berry Sport and Recreation Camp in Term 4, with a reminder that all final payments are due by Friday 15th September, including the compulsory online medical application. Year Six students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their ‘Class of 2017’ t-‐shirts.

Father’s Day Gift Stall Father’s Day is the first Sunday in September and the P&C are running a Father’s Day Gift Stall to help students purchase gifts for Dads, Grandfathers or a Special Man in their life. The stall will be open on Wednesday 30 August and Thursday 31 August, 8:30am until 9:10am. The stall will be stocked with assorted gifts, ranging in price from $1 to $20, so there should be plenty of gift options from which to choose. So get the kids saving their pennies to spoil their special man! A special thanks goes to our event sponsors, IGA Beverly Hills and Robert Sharp Real Estate. In addition, the stall will be the last chance in 2017 to purchase Entertainment Books, with all proceeds going to the P&C. Can you help? Could you volunteer some time to help at the stall on the Wednesday or Thursday morning? Please contact Roberta on 0410 440 304 with any offers or queries.
SCHOOL WALKATHON – WEDNESDAY, 6 SEPTEMBER The School Walkathon is fast approaching. This week all students would have received a copy of the Walkathon Flyer, a Sponsor Form and payment envelope. Each year with your help, the BHPS P&C Association works very hard to raise funds to help our school purchase much needed learning resources and programs for our children’s education. This year, we have set a goal of $15,000 to help the school purchase: • New books to support our Home Reading Scheme – replenish the program with new titles across all reading levels 1-‐30. • 16 new iPads, headphones, screen protectors and cases for Stages 1 & 2 to support new software updates and learning programs. • Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) signage to continue reinforcing the PBL ethos and expectations to students across the school.
Help us WALK towards this goal on WEDNESDAY, 6 SEPTEMBER during our SCHOOL WALKATHON. All money raised will go DIRECTLY back into helping our school fund these wish list items. Together, we can promote a healthy lifestyle to our children AND walk towards achieving our goal to help fund resources for their education! Thank you for your support!
