 A great sports car needs a great engine – it isthe heart o any high-perormance machine. Inthe DB9’s case, that great engine is a powerulyet refned all-aluminium 6.0-litre V12. It p roduces350 kW (470 bhp) and 600 Nm (443 lb t) o torque. That gives a power to weight ratio o 199 kW/tonne (267 bhp/tonne) – one o thehighest fgures in its class.

Perormance is enormous, yet usable. Top speedis up to 306 km/h (190 mph) and accelerationsees 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds or both theautomatic and the six-speed manual.

Despite these immensely impressive fguresand the instant nature o the throttle response,the DB9 can also relax. Eighty per cent o the V12 engine’s torque, or pulling p ower,is available rom as little as 1500 rpm, whileenormous mid-range perormance providesinstant overtaking power almost regardless o engine speed, or even which gear the car is in.

 Aston Martins have always sounded like true

thoroughbreds and the DB9 is no exception:the 6.0-litre V12 has been described as oneo the fnest-sounding engines in production. The exhaust is tuned not only to be efcientbut also to provide the appropriate musicalaccompaniment. Under hard acceleration,the V12 has an exhilarating roar; when cruising,the growl becomes muted and melodic, hintingat the power within without being brash andobtrusive. The DB9 oers a choice o two rearmid-mounted transmissions, both allowing thedriver superb interaction with the car.

 The six-speed ‘Touchtronic 2’ ully automattransmission uses shit-by-wire technologyand replaces the conventional gear lever wdashboard-mounted buttons to select ParkReverse, Neutral and Drive modes. ONTROL Great sports cars must handle superbly. Theyshould respond quickly and predictably to drivercommands; they should be nimble and agile. To achieve the low weight that is the startingpoint or such agility, all the DB9’s major bodyand mechanical components are made romeither aluminium, magnesium alloy or advanced,lightweight, composite materials.

 The ront-to-rear weight distribution o theDB9 is a perect 50:50, with 85 per cent o thecar’s mass sited between the ront and rearaxles. The aluminium V12 engine is mountedas ar back as possible in a ‘ront mid-engined’layout. The compact aluminium transaxlehousing the gearbox and fnal drive ispositioned at the rear, orward o the rear axle.

Electronic Brakeorce Distribution (EBD)and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) are alsoemployed. The result is a car that can be drivenwith great ease and precision, thanks to theow o communication through the steering.

 The DB9 excels not because it has myriadelectronic controls added in an attempt toovercome compromise, but because it hasan inherently light and rigid structure, perectweight distribution and fnely tuned suspension.

More than any other quality, the DB9 seeks toserve up the richest driving experience in thesports GT class. It serenades the driver with itsbalance o engine and exhaust notes, providesscintillating perormance and agility and has aseductive blend o uent steering and linearcontrols.  The DB9 cabin is ocused on the driver,who sits as low and as close as possible to thecar’s centre o gravity. Combined with the rigidbody structure and all-aluminium, double-wishbone suspension, the result is unflteredeedback o the car’s dynamic behaviour. This unparalleled two-way communication –car to driver, driver to car – is at the very coreo the DB9’s design philosophy.

 The steering, power-assisted or lightness, issuperbly responsive, helped by the car’s lowweight and excellent balance. The large discbrakes – 355 mm diameter discs at the rontand 330 mm at the rear – are ventilated andgrooved, to aid cooling and boost brakingperormance. Radially mounted, our-piston,monobloc calipers provide great stopping powerwith a frm yet progressive pedal eel.

 The DB9’s active saety – the ability tohelp avoid an accident occurring in the frstplace – begins with its inherent agility andresponsiveness. The lightweight, rigid body

 The DB9 is technologically sophisticated andmeticulously engineered. Its developmentprogramme included rigorous testing in locationsas diverse as Nardo in Italy, Death Valley in theUSA and inside the Arctic Circle in Sweden.In total, more than one million testing miles havebeen covered. Design and engineering innovationsinclude the Organic Electroluminescent displays(OEL) in the instrument pack and centre console,which provide greater clarity and resolution, aswell as LED (light-emitting diode) rear lampsdesigned to project urther and react morequickly than conventional systems.

 The propeller shat is particularly innovative: it ismanuactured rom carbon-fbre or lightness andimproved transmission refnement. The ‘swan-wing’ doors are another elegant and ingeniousdesign eature, opening out and up to improveaccess and prevent the doors rom being scuedon high kerbs. The DB9 also pioneered the useo ‘ultrasonic’ welding, which is 90 per centstronger than conventional spot welding andresults in a better fnish, yet uses only fve per

cent o the energy.

 Aston Martin has developed its own incrediblylight and strong aerospace-specifcation bondedaluminium structure. This unique VH (VerticalHorizontal) structure gives the DB9 one o themost structurally efcient body rames in the carindustry. Its huge rigidity aids handling, drivereedback and saety. More than any other singlecomponent, the advanced aluminium structureis the reason or the DB9’s extraordinarynimbleness, responsiveness and character.

ENGINEERING However, it is not just the body structure thais light and rigid. Other components have bdeveloped with weight reduction in mind, rthe aluminium V12 engine and transmissionthe orged aluminium suspension and aluminbodied dampers. Even the windscreen surrois cast aluminium, while the door rames aninner panels, steering column and gear chapaddles are all made rom magnesium.

 The result is that the DB9 is up to 1300 lb(590 kg) leaner than some other GT cars.  The DB9 is elegant, luxurious and supremelycomortable. Its cabin is hand-trimmed inbeautiul, natural materials – primarily wood andleather – and incorporates the latest in moderntechnology without resorting to sup eruouscontrols or displays. There is a minimum o distraction – even the satellite navigation screenolds discreetly away when not in use. Everyelement o the interior is hand-made andhand-fnished, rom the cutting o the leather tothe careully crated wood. This is done not outo deerence to tradition, but because a skilledcratsman c an fnish wood or leather to a arhigher standard than any machine. The le atheris particularly sot and supple, as you wouldexpect o Aston Martin, and is used throughoutthe cabin.

 The wood trims are inspired by hand-fnishedmodern urniture and there is a choice o fve:Walnut, Mahogany, Bamboo, Tamo Ash andPiano Black. In every case, ‘single-piece’ cutsare used, rather than tiny strips or thin appliqués.Crating such large pieces o wood is only

possible when done by hand.

 The use o aluminium on the dashboard,instrument panel, centre console and doorhandles reects the aluminium structure thatunderpins the entire car. The fnish is stylishand contemporary, yet the material itsel issteeped in automotive tradition.

 The DB9 has exceptional equipment levels, asone would expect in a high-perormance sportscar with GT levels o comort and refnement. The driver’s frst interaction with the powerul V12 engine is a blend o tradition a nd high-technology, with a touch o theatre. The ignitionis controlled by a stainless steel and glass ECU(Emotion Control Unit), designed to be as tactileand refned as a fne timepiece. The ECU isinserted into a special docking station setwithin the traditional clear glass starter button.Pressing the ECU ush with the surace o thestarter button fres the engine. Ater pressingonce again to stop the engine, the ECU risesout o its slot within the button so that it canbe removed.

 The centre console has clear, crisp graphics,

with a traditional analogue clock at the centreanked by rotary controls or the heating andair-conditioning system. These solid, turnedaluminium controls also operate the audiosystem, integrated Bluetooth telephone andultra-quick Hard Disk Drive (HDD) satellitenavigation unctions.

 Audio is provided by the 700 W Premium ASystem with Dolby® Pro Logic II®. Designedexclusively or Aston Martin, this system eatuhigh-quality, fbre-optic electronics, which paudio signals with marvellous precision andnear-perect clarity. The console also includeslot or the six-CD auto changer, while benethe centre armrest there is connectivity or iand MP3 players.

Full Bluetooth integration is standard on theDB9, enabling you to synchronise your mobiltelephone directory through the car’s displascreens. It can also display the last 10 callsreceived, made and missed.

 Aston Martins are hand-built cars, made toorder, and this bespoke approach enables tprovision o any combination o paint and leathtrim colours. There is, however, an extensivepalette o standard body colours and interiorfnishes, careully chosen by Aston Martin’sdesign team to complement the orms,materials and suraces o the car.

 Twenty-three standard paint colours areavailable, categorised as either ‘contempora‘ast track’ or ‘special’, and varying rom submetallics to the brightest hues. In addition, shades o the fnest, sotest leather, ninecolours o carpet and fve choices o wood trcomplete the standard range. For the DB9 Volante, there are eight hood colours availarom Black to Sandstorm.

Standard eatures include satellite navigatio(where available), rear parking sensors,Bluetooth telephone connectivity, cruise copowerold mirrors, tyre-pressure monitoringand heated ront seats. Additiona l options aavailable, including diamond-turned alloywheels, personalised sill plaques and a brigfnish grille.

 The DB9 was the frst Aston Martin to beproduced at the company’s actory at Gaydin Warwickshire. Hand-built by techniciansand cratsmen at a series o work stations,it benefts rom the superior levels o fnishand exclusive design details that would beimpossible in a mass-produced car. The
