ASSOCIATION AYE AYE VO / FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DU FILM DE NANCY

Created in 1994, the Aye Aye vo’s aim is to help the creation, the production, the edition and distribution of all culural and artistic works, in particular cinematographic works.The association organises “ Le Festival international du film de Nancy”(Nancy international film Festival), the most important event known for the association, every year, at the end of summer. The festival is generalist, which means that it screens diverse movies (animation, fiction, documentary, feature films and short films, drama, comedy, experimental...), all in original languages. It deals with an International short film competition and an European documentaries competition. The festival is a place of meeting: meeting with professionals and meeting with local people. Exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events are part of the festival.

The association has another festival called “Festival de la petite école du film court/ Small’s school short film Festival” for groups and school systems only. The association develops also educational animation to increase the comprehension and artistic sense for cinematographic works in primary, secondary and high schools in the local area. Association’s members are deeply involved in both activities. The association is supported by several organisations local and national ones, such as: university, schools; the official cultural French State Department and international partners.

Indeed, during the year, the association Aye Aye VO, with the project of the “Petite école du film court” and the “Pôle éducatif ”, raise awareness among children to the cinematographic language with the study of specific films, chosen for their artistic quality. Volunteers contribute to the pedagogic work in the school and add their own cultural point of view. The volunteer can work very closely with the “Petite ecole” as Marija Manojlovic (SVE) did : she co-presented movies for children during the “Festival de la Petite école du film court”, dedicated to groups and school systems, each year. She also worked for different workshops and for the programming of this festival. She really loved this experience. To know more about the missions in particular : please see the text box below.

Volunteers also participate in a second festival called “Le Festival de la Petite école du film court” (Small’s school short film Festival), dedicated to young audience, groups and school systems, organized each year in May / July. This festival and the different workshops with children are important for volunteers because it’s a pedagogic work with children, realized also during the all year with the school systems.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Since 2003, the association is hosting volunteers. Volunteers are involved in the general organization of the summer’s festival. Their real implication and meaning is letting them develop their own project in the framework of the film festival. Each year, one or two topics are chosen (for exemple : Germany, South America, migration) which contributes to have a different and rich audience each year as different directors from different countries. In 2018, the festival will mainly deal with “Balkan countries” and another Geographic zones.

The volunteer will be part of the following activities:• Participation in the programming of the Festival’s films. This mission brings in particular a competence and

a more professional vision of the audio-visual world and about cinema. It also allows a civic education and citizen notably by the viewing of numerous documentaries. The viewing of films in French or with French subtitles also brings them a complement to the language course.

• Film management. It is a primordial mission in the organization of the festival. The volunteer will help to create a database from all the selected films (about 150 films in competition or out of competition) for the different programmings of the festival. The volunteer then acquires computer and organization skills. The film management also includes the application for broadcast rights. For this purpose the volunteer also learns to conduct a search to identify the rights holders of the films and to contact them. Our international programming, the rights holders can be too. The directors / producers can register in an international network, acquire legal concepts on the right to intellectual property and communicate with different partners.

• Technical assistance and film screenings. After obtaining broadcasting rights, it is necessary to prepare the supports for projections. A film must be in the right format, subtitled and encoded. The volunteer develops a very specific competence in audiovisual technique. To carry out this mission, the volunteer will be trained by professionals working on the festival.

• Participation in the organization of the festival “Festival de la petite école du film court/ Small’s school short film Festival”. This young public festival dedicated to school children is held once a year. The volunteer will attend this festival especially to attend the screenings. He will be able to become aware of the image education, learn how to work with young children especially on film and audiovisual through short films.

• Participation in working meetings. Truly part of the festival team, the volunteer will attend the meetings. He will then have a global vision of the setting up of an event such as the festival and will thus be able to understand the various parameters and problems that come into play in the organization of such an event. He will also develop organizational tools that will benefit him regardless of his professional orientation.

• The volunteer will develop his audiovisual knowledge through professional meetings. This knowledge will combine both an understanding of the networks and a development of the analysis of the cinematographic tool. This knowledge will be appreciated especially during debates with other professionals during festivals, or with the public during various screenings (preselection screening sessions, actions of education to the image with the young public).

• Each mission will propose the necessary acquisition of technical skills for projections (broadcast media, subtitling system ...), IT tools (mail management, database, presentation tools ...) and partnership relations (negotiation of film rights, process of creation of communication media ...).

SUMARRY OF HOST PROJECT :Duration : 6 months, from May 1st to October 30th, 2018.Number of volunteers: 2 volunteers in European Voluntary Service and 3 Volunteeres in Civic Service

Place – Nancy A former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine until its attachment to the Kingdom of France in 1766, Nancy is famous for its Stanislas square, named after the last duke of Lorraine, as well as for being a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also home to many historic monuments and is one of the European homes of Art Nouveau thanks to the École de Nancy. Nancy is the second most populated community in Lorraine, right after Metz. With 434 479 habitants in 2012, the Nancy Urban Area is the most populated in Lorraine; the second most populated in Grand Est after that of Strasbourg, and the twenthieth most populated in France. Nancy is also one of the main university cities and the agglomeration is home to one of the main health centers in France.

The Old Town, medieval and renaissance, takes you back in time. The streets are paved, the shops lead to small cafés, their outdoor tables are an invitation to take your time and to enjoy the place. The impressive Craffe Gate (14th c.) closes the Grand rue, lined with restaurants, artisans, grocery stores and local shops and it is the backbone of the Old Town. The Old Town is not a touristic site but a lively neighborhood, mixing all social catgories, and very appreciated by the youth. With its sunday market, its flea markets, its shops and its coffee terraces, the neighborhood lives constantly every day!

Housing and meals : For the first month the volunteer will live in a residence. The idea is to allow them enough freedom in the first month so that they can look for convenient housing, with the help of his tutor and mentor. During the first month, the breakfast and dinner are included in the residence. In the upcoming months, the volunteer will receive a reasonable allowance to cover the cost of food and pocket money.

Tutoring: the volunteer will have a referent (the director of the association) for the activities to be carried out. Their tutor is the coordinator, herself a foreigner, who will accompany the volunteers in the administrative procedures such as opening a bank account, acquiring a French mobile number etc. Another local volunteer will be their mentor, this remains open according to the empathies between colleagues.
