From the desk of Susy PaivaAs you can imagine, I have a
demanding job as ExecutiveDirector of All American. This isone of the reasons I bring Coco,my Boston Terrier, to work withme. I am convinced that animalsreduce stress and make for amore relaxing environment.
Coco brings love to everyoneshe comes in contact with. Nomatter how stressed I may be, allI have to do is look down in tothose big brown eyes and myworries just melt away.
I am a firm believer that dogsmake people feel good. When Iwalk around our communitywith Coco, residents instantlyreact to her in a positive way.Residents instantly smile andreach out to pat her ... and sheloves it.
Coco will be visiting AAAL forsome good old-fashioned pettheory, so keep your eyes peeledfor our four-legged friend.
Optimal LivingWe always hear how
important it is to participate inphysical activity. Physicalactivity is any body movementthat works your muscles andrequires more energy thanresting. Specific examplesinclude: walking, dancing, swimming, yoga, and evengardening. Physical activity hasmany health related benefits, both physically and mentally.Active adults are at lower risk fordepression and declines incognitive function as theyget older.
There are many health relatedbenefits of participating in dailyphysical activity. It helps youmaintain a healthy weight, andmakes it easier to do daily tasks, such as climbing stairs, shopping and even getting upfrom a chair. Physical activityalso lowers your risk for manydiseases, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease andcancer.
The guidelines provided bythe National Institute of Healthrecommend an average of 150minutes of activity each week foradults aged 65 and older. That isthe goal of the Optimal LivingProgram here at All American.Although it may seem like a lot,it really only takes participatingin one, thirty-minute class a day!Whether it’s the “Walking Club,”“Yoga” or “Sit and Fit,” weencourage all residents to takeadvantage of any and all of theexercises classes provided here!

Acting the PartWilliam Shakespeare wrote,
“All the world’s a stage, and allthe men and women merelyplayers.” Whether you haveexperience with acting or preferto watch others perform, takethe stage with friends and familyand reflect on these questions.
• Who are your favoriteactors and actresses? Whydo you admire their work?
• What movies, TV shows orstage productions haveyour favorite performersappeared in?
• Do you prefer watchingactors perform comedy, drama or both? Do youthink a serious role orcomedic role would beharder to play, and why?
• Have you ever acted, perhaps in a school play, community theater or evenon TV or in a movie? If so,discuss the experience.
• If you have never acted,do you wish you wouldhave tried it? Why do youthink some people aredrawn to acting?
• Do you know anyone whoworked or currently worksas a professional actor?Talk about their career.
• Think of some of yourfavorite characters on stageor screen. Which role doyou think would be themost fun to play? Themost difficult?

Hot Wheels HistoryHot Wheels, those pocket-
sized toy cars, have been racingoff store shelves and revving upplaytime since 1968.
While die-cast cars had beenpopular with youngsters fordecades, many of them did notlook realistic and could roll onlya few inches. Enter ElliotHandler, co-founder ofAmerican toy company Mattel, who was driven to make a bettermodel. He hired Chevrolet autodesigner Harry Bradley torecreate miniature versions ofthe “muscle” cars thatdominated California highways.
The result was a line of16 different Hot Wheels, nicknamed the Sweet 16, whichincluded models of the Camaro,Corvette, Barracuda andVolkswagen. Flashy and fast, they featured precise detailsand brightly colored paintwork, and their thick mag wheels andspecialized axles made themzoom several feet. Mattel soonoffered accessories for the cars, like plastic racing tracksand launchers.
More than 4 billion HotWheels have been sold sincetheir debut. For many, the toysaren’t just child’s play; collectorsabound, with some spendingthousands of dollars onrare models.
