ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Learning Conferences Many of our parents and carers took the opportunity to celebrate their child’s progress and discuss strategies for further improvement with teachers during the learning conferences held on Thursday 30 March. It is now important that from the commencement of Term 2, with the support of their parents, carers and teachers, students ensure that they put agreed strategies for improvement into practice. Work Experience Year 10 students who have taken the opportunity to arrange a work experience placement will be off campus during the second week of term 2. This presents an excellent opportunity for those students to experience the work environment and expectations of varied occupations. Students have selected placements in the medical and legal fields, engineering, hospitality, IT, education, entertainment, animal welfare, trades and retail. A staff member from Mullauna will visit each of the students on a work experience placement during the second week of term. During these visits students and employers will have the opportunity to discuss the experience with that staff member. As Mullauna students always prove to be excellent ambassadors for the college, in the past many have been offered part-time jobs as a result of their work placement. No doubt those students who are about to undertake work experience will continue to represent the college in a very positive manner and may be afforded similar opportunities. Students who have not arranged for a work experience placement are expected to attend classes for the duration of the school week. Open Night 27 April 2017 All Mullauna College families are warmly invited to attend Open Night, which is scheduled to commence at 6.30pm on Thursday 27 April. The purpose of Open Night is to celebrate the excellent and varied learning opportunities offered and will be facilitated by our Mullauna students and staff. As the Junior Learning and Design Centres are now open for operation, it will also provide an opportunity for our families to visit those learning spaces. We also expect that the new Food Studies and VCE Learning Centre will also be ready for Open Night. Athletics Carnival The annual Athletics Carnival will be held on 20 April, which is the first Thursday of Term 2. House Captains have been working hard to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in the Athletics Carnival in some capacity and contribute to accumulating points for their house.

The 2017 Carnival will be held at Doncaster Athletics Track, which is located at 123 George St, Doncaster East. All students are expected to attend the carnival and will be transported to the venue in the morning and then back to school for dismissal after final presentations for the day. Students are expected to be present on the school cricket oval for roll marking at 8.45am. Remember to come in your house colours and creative costumes. School Sport and PE uniform School uniform is an important element of the Mullauna College identity and the adherence to expectations is paramount. To assist students to ensure that they present as well as possible at all times, the PE and sport uniform policy has been adjusted as listed below. Year 7 – 12 students are to attend school in the full Mullauna College uniform at all times. If PE or Sport forms any part of the school day, students are to change into their sports uniform at the

beginning of the lesson. The tracksuit is considered part of the PE/sport uniform. For the security of personal belongings, students are required to name all uniform items and bring these to and

from the gymnasium change rooms in a plastic or sports bag. For periods 1 – 4, all students are required to change back into their college uniform after PE/Sport classes. For Periods 5 and 6, students can go home in their full Mullauna College sport uniform. Students should not mix sport and general college uniform at any time. When representing the college at interschool sporting competitions full sport uniform is compulsory. Students

are permitted to wear the full college tracksuit to and from the school on these days. The adjusted PE and sport uniform requirements will be in in place from the commencement of Term 2. Year 12 40+ Club It was pleasing to see so many Year 12 students take the opportunity to commit to the Year 12 40+ Club. Those students will work to develop and hone skills with the assistance of teachers and their peers through a series 7.30am breakfast workshop sessions. Please be reminded that as well as the final year exams, the General Achievement Task (GAT) can be an important element in determining the final study score for any subject. The practice GAT will be held on Curriculum Day 16 May and is compulsory for all students undertaking Unit 3 and 4 subjects this year. The GAT will be conducted across the state on Wednesday 14 June.

Year 12 Theme day The first Year 12 Theme day for 2017 was held on Friday 24 March. Students came in their favourite sporting theme and challenged teachers to a Volleyball match during lunchtime. The friendly banter and good will between students and teachers was full of goodwill and the responsibility that year 12 students showed throughout the day was a credit to them.

Anzac day On Tuesday 25 April, the College Captains will represent the Mullauna college community at the Dawn Service to be held at Halliday Park. One of our College Captains will read a poem at 5.00am after which all four captains will place a wreath during the service. All students will have the opportunity to pay their respects during the Anzac Day Assembly, which will be held prior to Lunch on Tuesday 25 April. Wishing all students, staff, parents and carers a safe and pleasant holiday period.

GERMAN STUDENT EXCHANGE 2017 This year Mullauna College has once again joined Vermont and Heathmont Colleges in the annual German exchange

between Vermont Secondary College and their sister school, the Integrierte Gesamtschule (IGS comprehensive

school) Kaufungen, Germany. This program has been successfully running for 22 years. Altogether, there were 19

visitors from Germany: 17 students and two teachers (Ms Martina Schlosser and Ms Nika Deymeh) from IGS

Kaufungen. Of those 17 students, five are being hosted by Mullauna students and their families.

Four of our students (Thomas, Keishin, Hayley and Luke) will take part in the reciprocal exchange to Germany in

Spring 2017. While the visitors have been here during the last two weeks of this term, they celebrated their first day

at Mullauna College with a welcome lunch and went on excursions with their accompanying teachers to various

places of interest such as the Eureka Tower, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria Market and Phillip Island for a surfing

lesson. While Vermont SC organises most of the excursions and day trips, Mullauna also welcomed the exchange stu-

dents and their teachers for a school visit on Monday 27 March. Our German visitors followed a special program in

Food Tech, Art, Sport and Music, which was a lot of fun as you can see from the photos! Many thanks to all of the

teachers involved.

The German group will be spending a few days travelling through Victoria before returning home to Germany. We

wish our guests a wonderful time in Australia. No doubt, the experience will be memorable and valuable for all the

students and families involved.

If you are a student in Year 9-11 or a parent/carer who would like to have more information about the next

2017/2018 German Exchange program, please read the letter which follows.

German Exchange 2017 / 2018

Dear parents, carers and students,

Later this year, we will again be joining with Vermont Secondary College and Heathmont College in the annual exchange with their sister school, the Integrierte Gesamtschule (IGS comprehensive school) Kaufungen, in Germany. 2018 will be the 23rd year of this very successful program.

We are now seeking expressions of interest from:

Students in Year 9 to participate in the full program, including hosting a German exchange student from Saturday 21st October to Saturday 11th November 2017 – approximately three weeks, including the Cup Day ‘long weekend’ and travelling to Germany in the first Term of Year 10 in 2018. Mullauna SC students will depart on 23rd March and will arrive back in Melbourne on 19th April 2018.

Students in years 9-11 to host a German exchange student for 3 weeks in October/November 2017, approximately three weeks, including the Cup Day ‘long week-end’.

In 2017/2018, the program is also open to students not studying German, especially for hosting. Students studying German will have priority, but there is always more demand from Germany!

This is an excellent opportunity to experience an exchange program, with both hosting and travel closely supported by the college staff from all the participating schools. A Vermont SC German teacher accompanies the group travelling to Germany.

For students of German, it is an ideal opportunity to experience German family life and culture first-hand, and to improve language skills. The cost is very reasonable and is reliant on final numbers, but will be in the vicinity of $4,300 (based on the last two years) for the three week homestay experience. The cost includes airfares, comprehensive travel insurance, all accommodation and board, an overnight excursion to Berlin and visits to at least five other cities of interest.

The full program involves a direct exchange with reciprocal hosting. Alternatively, you can just choose to host a German student. A number of families have done this in the past, especially as a forerunner to full participation the following year. Hosting is a great experience in itself! To host there is no requirement for your child to be learning German.

To indicate your interest, and to receive more information, please contact your child’s German teacher via Compass (or [email protected]). A commitment to participate and initial deposit of $500 will need to be made by the end of April 2017.

MUSICAL NOTES

On Tuesday 28 March, 82 of our music students stepped on stage for our ‘Concert For A Cause’ soiree. The soiree was organised by the Performing Arts Captains: Zoe, Nathan,

Caitlin, Jordie, Hannah and Riley who planned all elements of the event. The first job was to choose a dress theme for the evening. The dress theme last year was hats and hair accessories and this

year Caitlin Swift came up with the idea of each student choosing their favourite charity and wearing something which reflected their choice. The students’ choices included Fly For The Kids, St Vincent De Paul, Make A Wish Foundation, Cancer Council, Good Friday Appeal, Beyond Blue, Blue Ribbon, Leukaemia Foundation, Autism Awareness, Salvation Army, Breast Cancer, Red Cross, RSPCA, Guide Dogs, Epilepsy, World Vision, Blue Cross, Australian Childhood Foundation, The Smith Family, Autism Victoria, Anzac, Heart Foundation, Beanies for Brain Cancer and World Wildlife Fund. They then wore the pin, t-shirt or hat to show their support. The charity selected as the beneficiary for the evening’s fundraising was The Cancer Council. We raised $265.60 for this worthy cause. All performances were in small groups or as soloists. All of our year 12 students who have instrumental music lessons, perform solo at the soiree in celebration of their musical achievements through high school. We would like to congratulate all of our amazing young musicians who prepared their music so brilliantly for this night.
