WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsive) The Day of Pentecost is here: the day when the flames of faith dance in our hearts. The Day of Pentecost is here: the day when our babbling speech becomes the Good News for the world. The Day of Pentecost is here: the day when compassion is seared into our souls. The Day of Pentecost is here: let the people of God rejoice. Alleluia!

OPENING PRAYER

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Spirit of God, you move around us and we wave you away as if you are a fly

getting too close to our heads. You move among us, but we all have different ideas… different ways of

doing things… and so your perfectly chilling harmonics are drowned out by our chaotic dissonance.

You move within us, but sometimes we just aren’t willing to risk our own reputations to embrace your

radical vision. But, deep down, we know that we need to move beyond ourselves… we know that the

church needs to move beyond itself. So keep moving…keep moving around us, among us, and within

us… keep moving us so that we can be creators of movement in the world… Amen. (Silence for

personal confession)

Local Mission FPCP is working more closely with our Presbytery and its program for the 13,000 children in foster in Michigan. Our prayer ministry can help by praying for a special child each month. This month we are praying for 12-year-old Jesse, who has been in the foster care system for 7 years.

He likes feeling needed by others and is very helpful and caring toward

them. He enjoys the outdoors, playing basketball and football or riding

his bike. When it’s time to relax, Jesse likes watching TV and movies,

but he really loves to draw. This warm, caring and sensitive youngster

describes himself as funny, smart and a good helper.

Jesse states that he “just wants a family to love him.” More info can be found at Mare.org. If you are

interested in helping with our foster care projects, please call Peggy at 734.953.1044. Beginning this fall

FPCP will be hosting the foster care meetings for Western Wayne and Oakland County.

“We are so grateful for all of our Kids Hope Mentors; they are doing amazing things in the lives of our students.”

Catherine Williams, Principal, Bird Elementary

One way our church provides direct help to our community is through Kids Hope USA at Bird Elementary and

West Middle School. Local Mission and Presbyterian Women support our church’s Kids Hope partnership. Members of our church family serve as mentors to high-risk students at these two schools, faithfully showing

up each week of the school year to provide encouragement, love and support.

Bird Elementary proudly posted a certificate near their office, recognizing their partnership with our church.

On June 2, our elementary school program will wrap up their second year at Bird. We celebrate 19 mentor-student relationships formed over this school year: 19 young lives shown the love of

Christ through the love of an FPCP member/mentor. Each relationship is also supported behind the scenes by a prayer partner.

Elementary program Mentors for 2016-2017 Connie Adams, Linda Baric, Jim Bernard, Kris Black, Tom Brady, Denny Devine, Kiki Farrow, Bev Girard, Evan Johnson, Susan Johnson, Lily Jones, Craig Lee, Rob Leist, Amy Marmaduke, Grant Marmaduke, Kari Rhea, Janet Sibbold, Jane Weaver, Bob White.

Prayer Support: Darlene Maginley, Prayer Partner Coordinator Prayer Partners: Sarah Anthony, Nancy Brady, Patti Devine, Tina Francis, Susan Johnson, Sue Kage, Cecelia Lark, Susan Lee, Judy Morgan, Joann Oldham, Karen Thiele, Marie McCubbrey, Tom Weaver, Tina Fitzgerald, Tami Rager, Sue Stanley, Beth Walsh, Nancy White.

If you would like more information about this program, (we will need more mentors next school year!) please contact Susan Johnson, Kids Hope Director, Bird Elementary at 734.751.9334 or Marie McCubbrey, Kids Hope Director, West Middle School.

Local Mission Help Feed Needy Children with

“Cereal for Summer” Kids who rely on free or reduced-priced breakfast at

school often go without enough to eat during the summer months. Here is your chance to help food insecure families with a simple donation of a box of

cereal or other non-perishable breakfast items. The Presbytery of Detroit’s Hunger Ministries Program hopes to distribute 1,000 boxes of cereal this summer.

Let’s do our part to help! Donations may be placed in the marked bin in the collection area from now until June 11.

Thank you!!

“For I was hungry and you gave me food…” Matthew 25:35

As you and your family make plans for the summer, mark off Saturday, August 5th and Sunday, August 6th as special days, when FPCP Local Mission will sponsor a meal at the Crossroads Soup kitchen in Detroit. There are several opportunities to volunteer. Saturday August 5th, we will meet here in our own FPCP kitchen between 8:30-11:30 to prepare the

meat and cheese for the Sunday crews. Sunday August 6th, two groups will go to Crossroads located on West Grand Blvd. in Detroit:

The meal preparation team works between 8:30-11:30 making sandwiches and preparing soup. The serving team works between 11:15-3:30 bagging and serving lunches.

Please consider making time for this rewarding and important mission project. It provides a nourishing meal for 600 people. Sign-up sheets can be found on the Local Mission Bulletin Board. If you have questions, please contact Kris Black 734-927-7793

Self Study Committee Update

Since late March, members of the Self Study Committee have been working to compile and interpret information which will be published in a report for the Presbytery of Detroit. A Self Study document is required for churches seeking a new senior pastor.

Data such as church membership, attendance, budget, stewardship, and demographic data of the surrounding communities have all been researched. In addition to statistical information, the Self Study report relies heavily on input from the congregation to gauge who we are as a family of faith, areas of strength within our ministry, aspects which could be improved upon, and desired path we wish to pursue.

Your thoughts and input concerning FPCP are vital to the successful completion of this report. One avenue we are using to engage our congregation will begin next Sunday, June 11. Prior to entering the Sanctuary or Upper Room, you will be given an index card with a question relating to FPCP and our search for a new senior pastor. We encourage your honest feedback and all respondents will remain anonymous. At the conclusion of the worship service, cards will be collected at the exits. We will repeat this process on June 25 and July 16, each week offering a different question to consider.

This is only one of several avenues we are using to engage our congregation as we walk this path of transition.

The Self Study Committee will be reaching out to you online, through the mail, and for those who wish to

participate, in small group settings. The committee thanks you for your input and prayerful support.

Are You Interested in Contributing a Floral Arrangement for Sanctuary Worship Services?

If you are interested in contributing a floral arrangement for a specific worship service in our church sanctuary, please contact Nancy White:

[email protected] 734-453-1044

Two floral arrangements are donated for sanctuary worship services each week; the florist currently changes $25 for each bouquet of seasonal flowers. Thank you!

FPCP Presbyterians for Earth Care

Planting Season is Here!!!! Do Your Part to Recycle!!!

Did you know that the plastic pots and trays that your flowers, plants and vegetables come in are not recyclable in your weekly trash pick-up? Don’t worry, you can still do your part. Here are a couple of options:

We will collect these items at church on Sunday, June 4

th and Sunday, June 11

th. Just bring your items and leave them outside the

church by the bench at the side of the building. Members of the FPCP Presbyterians for Earth Care will collect them and take them to a recycle site.

You can take these items yourself to the following locations to be recycled: --Lowe’s (any store) --Willow Greenhouse (on Curtis Rd. south of Six Mile Rd.)

Vacation Bible School’s theme this year is Maker Fun Factory. In keeping with that theme, the FPCP Presbyterians for Earth Care will be creating a “Maker Space” during VBS one day. We are asking for donations of various items to make the “can creatures” pictured below - all made from recycled items. We’re looking for:

Cans of all sizes (no sharp edges, please) Nuts and bolts Small pieces of plywood or wood Small pieces of fabric Yarn Googly eyes Pipe Cleaners Pompoms Magnets Other odds and ends Please leave your donation in the bin in the collection area in the lower level of the church. Thanks so much for supporting our efforts in teaching our children how beautiful things can be created from everyday items (and save them from the landfill).
