A Word about Assessment
The goal of the assessment test is to help you discover what skills your students have acquiredand what skills they need to learn. You can use the pretest at the beginning of a new schoolyear or during the course of the school year to give you an idea of where your students are intheir development. The post-test can then be used as a follow-up. As you give the assessment, talk with your students about their thinking. Ask questions about the answers they give. If astudent cannot complete the assessment, you can use the assessment as a teaching tool. Walkthe student through the assessment, teaching as you go.
Keys to Positive Assessment
Your students will need the assessment page and a pencil.Provide a quiet place free of clutter and distractions. If parents are administering the test at home, suggest that they try answering questions with aquestion. For example:
Student: “What is this word?”Parent: “What letters do you see in the word?” or “What sound does each letter make?”
Instruct parents to refrain from immediately correcting their child and to note skills that need tobe taught or reinforced. They should have the child move on if he or she is having difficulty.
Assessment Tests
The assessment tests are divided into 4 parts:Assessment 1 assesses reading ability, including comprehension, main idea, logic, and
vocabulary.Assessment 2 assesses language skills and the ability to recognize such things as
syllabication, base words, homonyms, synonyms, plurals, and verb tense.Assessment 3 provides writing practice in cursive that also tests knowledge of basic
grammar, punctuation, and sentence logic.Assessment 4 assesses math skills, including place value, time and money values, addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, word problems, and fractions.
The Assessments Include 2 Parts:
1. An assessment to test what students already know.2. A post-assessment to test what students have learned.
