(11A,B,C and D only)
Assessment title:
Mock exams in Language and Literature
Topics being covered in these exams:
Literature:
An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
A selection of poetry from the ‘Relationships’ cluster of the Edexcel Poetry
Anthology
Two previously unseen poems
Language:
Inference and deduction, language and structural analysis and
comprehension of a previously unseen fiction text.
Creative fiction writing skills.
Inference and deduction, language and structural analysis, evaluation,
comparison and comprehension of two previously unseen non-fiction texts.
Non-fiction writing skills.
How you can help your child to achieve their best:
All students have been given revision guides for each of the main texts studied in the
English Literature course and these will have sample exam questions for students to
complete in order to test their knowledge and exam skills. For the poetry section,
students should take their anthology home and read through the annotations they
have made in class. They have been advised to spend three hours a week revising
English so parents and carers can support their child by ensuring that they have a
quiet space in which to complete this revision. Another source of revision notes and
quizzes is the BBC Bitesize website; students simply need to search for the text name
in order to access notes on the poetry, plays and prose covered in this qualification.
Students were also given a revision pack to be started over the Christmas break and
they will be continuing with these tasks to aid their independent revision.
For English Language, students will be focussing on this in lessons and in many of their
intervention sessions. However, they can still practice the skills needed for this exam
at home; teachers find that understanding non-fiction texts and how best to analyse
them is a particular weakness in exams so exposing students to newspapers,
magazines, blogs and biographies would be really beneficial for them. The BBC
Bitesize website also has some fantastic resources to help your child with the skills
needed to be successful in this qualification. Finally, students were also given
revision pack to be started over the Christmas break and they will be continuing with
these tasks to aid their independent revision.
Year 11 English (Entry Level)
(11E only)
Assessment title:
Fiction reading assessment
Topics being covered:
Students will be working towards their first formal reading assessment
and this will be focused on fiction texts.
How you can help your child to achieve their best:
All students have been given revision materials to complete so please
support them in completing these tasks. Supplementary to this, another good
way for the students to help themselves is to practice reading fiction as much
as they can at home. These texts can be any novel or short story of their
choice and after they have read it, it would be helpful for you to ask them
about it. Questions you may ask could include ‘What was the climax of the
story?’, ‘How was the main character presented?’ or ‘How did the writer give
you clues throughout the story so that you could guess the ending?’
How your child will be assessed:
In Spring 2 all students in Year 11 will be sitting a full, 3 paper GCSE mock
examination. All exams are 90 minutes long, paper 1 is non-calculator and
paper 2 and 3 are calculator. Doing all three exams will give us the most
information and a very clear picture of what students can already answer
and what the focus needs to be until the next exams. As this is a full mock
exam, we are aware that there are topics that will be tested that have not
yet been taught, though enough of the specification has been covered this
year for us to be able to see the students’ progress.
Students in Ma111, Ma112 and Ma113 will be sitting the higher tier and
students in Ma114 and Ma115 will be sitting the foundation tier paper. This
does not mean that students will necessarily sit these tiers in the summer but
we feel these tiers are most appropriate for the classes at this time.
Topics tested include:
Place value
Types of number
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Using a calculator
Ratio and proportion
Rearranging algebraic expressions and solving equations
Formulae including substitution and rearranging
Sequences
Angles
Perimeter, Area and Volume including problem solving
Mathematical reasoning
Pythagoras and Trigonometry
Charts and graphs
Averages
Probability
How you can help your child revise:
Maths is best revised in regular short sessions. 15 to 20 minutes every night is
far more beneficial than several solid hours on the weekend.
How your child will be assessed:
Combined students are sitting 6 separate assessments each at 1 hour 15mins
in length and will be conducted in exam conditions.
Triple students are sitting 6 separate assessments each at 1 hour 45 mins in
length
Students will be assessed on the entire course through the 6 papers they will
be sitting.
Each assessment will assess a variety of skills including working scientifically,
apparatus and techniques (practical skills) and maths mastery.

year, students should be encouraged to approach their teachers prior to the
half term with any areas of concern. Students have access to Tassomai which
they should be completing DAILY to complete their progress wheels green &
blue. Parents should be checking student’s completion of this regularly to
ensure they are maintaining the progress wheels.
Students have also been provided with personal learning checklists which
they have been told to complete and fill out their revision timetables – these
should be displayed at home somewhere that you are able to check and
ensure is being followed.
If you have any questions relating to Tassomai please contact Mr Morgan
(Head of Science)
Students in Year 11 will sit a full geography MOCK which has three papers.
The first paper is focused on global issues, which covers natural hazards
(tropical cyclones, volcanoes and earthquakes), development dynamics
(case study of an emerging country India) and the challenges of an
urbanising world (case study of a megacity Mumbai). The second paper is

How your child will be assessed:
Students are following the AQA GCSE specification where coursework is 60%
of the GCSE and the examination is 40% of the GCSE. During the spring term
Year 11 art students will be studying for and sitting their GCSE Art Exam.
Students have been given their exam paper in January and asked to
research and develop personal ideas and a final piece based on a chosen
theme. The exam will run over the entire spring term, until students’ take the
ten hour exam at the end of beginning of May. Students will address all four
assessment objectives on recording, analysis of artists, refinement of ideas
and materials, and creating a final response. Students will also need to
submit their coursework units on ‘Alice In Wonderland‘and ‘Food’ by the end
of May 2018.
Classwork is assessed every three weeks, giving students three lessons to
develop and refine a piece of work within their sketchbook. Each task
focuses on one of the assessment objectives and all students are taught key
skills and techniques to help them develop their knowledge, understanding,
ability, confidence and use of materials. The four assessment objectives in Art
are based on the AQA GCSE strands. They are contextual studies, use of
materials, recording ideas and a final piece. Students’ home work is assessed
throughout the year based levels of effort. The projects are formally assessed
with levels at the end of each term and at the end of the summer term after
students have produced their two final pieces.

* Reviewing and revising the definitions of key terms around the subject
* Using websites for preparation for end of term topics (e.g. BBC bitesize)
