ASOFIA 22nd National Conference

Introduction

Speakers

A message from the National PresidentOur nation’s capital, Canberra, is a fitting venue for this, our 22nd ASOFIA Conference. What better place to come together, from all parts of our great country, and build on our businesses and ourselves, making us stronger as both individuals and as an industry! Our theme Innovate+Collaborate is also a nod to our capital… a place where our voted leaders work together to create a bigger, better future for all of us. Our guest speakers this year bring a wealth of knowledge about how to deal with change and use it to im-prove ourselves, and as always, we will take some well-earned breaks to enjoy the sights, while spending time with friends and colleagues. Not forgetting our big night of nights, we will round up the Conference with an evening of great food and wine as we celebrate our Award winners!I’m sure I’ll see you there!

Marty Wilson

“The thing that sets Marty Wilson apart from other speakers is…his keynotes are incredibly engaging and funny, but the humour isn’t just “sugar to help the medicine go down”, it IS the medicine. (Mirvac)Reviews like these are common after an audience with Marty Wilson. A pharmacist, who became an award-winning advertising copywriter and then a stand-up comedian, Marty has spoken to over 500,000 in his career. As an expert in the psychology of human behaviour at work and at home, his ability to engage with, and laugh with, people from all walks of life makes him one of the best keynote speakers you’ll see. His presentation “Change without Fear” proves the best way to get people to open up to new ideas is with humour, not with outdated ideas like implementation workflow, process models, and personal transition frameworks. This session will remind you that we’re all thinking, feeling human beings with the capacity to grow, change and succeed.

Chris Helder

Chris Helder will be presenting two sessions at the Conference... first “Cut the Noise – Achieving Better Results with Less Guilt” and then “Useful Belief – Because it’s better than Positive Thinking”.Chris is a best-selling author and speaker who will be showing us how to deal with the many distractions we get bombarded with each day… from media, social media, endless emails and countless meetings, it’s almost impossible to work out what gets results and what is a waste of your time.Chris will explore techniques to increase focus and get more done in less time, how to simplify and prioritise, and how to let go of the guilt and get on with the job!Chris will also share his thoughts on Useful Belief - based on his best-selling book, this session works on altering your approach to handling tasks, while helping you to focus your time and energy into what really matters.

Friday 25th October

Playing host to the ASOFIA 22nd National Conference, Canberra is a destination full of surprises… and the ideal backdrop for this year’s theme. While the historic War Memorial and Parliament House remain a ‘must do’ for every visitor, you’ll see so much more of our nation’s capital as part of our conference. With a strong arts culture and an ever-changing floral display across the city, Canberra is no longer just a place of politics. This city is innovation in action! From our unique Welcome function and Last Post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial and an engaging function at the National Museum of Australia along with activities to explore the sights of Canberra, to the much anticipated finale of our Gala Dinner and Awards presentation at Hotel Realm, this year’s conference is a blend of robust business insights with two inspiring speakers and social relaxation that will have you collaborating and innovating on every level.

National Capital ExhibitionThe story of Canberra as the capital city of Australia. Canberra is unique in design and innovative in the history of town planning by being the result of a worldwide competition. The winners of that competition, Walter and Marion Griffin, presented a design where the built and the natural landscapes have equal importance. They designed a city that fits in between landmarks and remains in scale with humans. Learn more about what was here before the city, how the site and the design were chosen, what it might have looked like and what may happen in the future.

& Mount Ainslie LookoutFor picture-perfect views of Canberra, you can’t go past a visit to Mount Ainslie. Visit the lookout by luxury coach and enjoy the impressive scenery, lovely at all times but a particular treat at sunrise and sunset. Sip on champagne whilst enjoying the breathtaking views! Take in Lake Burley Griffin and many of Canberra’s national attractions, framed by picturesque mountain ranges. See how Walter Burley Griffin’s vision for the city has been brought to life. A hotspot for photographers, the vista is complemented by the abundance of native birds and wildlife.

Arts ExtravaganzaA spacious and inviting space, the National Gallery of Australia features inspiring collections of art of both Australian and international acclaim. Regular blockbuster exhibitions draw huge crowds, while the permanent galleries offer art and sculpture displays that each tell a unique story. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection is the largest in the world. Across the road you’ll find the popular and diverse National Portrait Gallery. It’s easy to become captivated by the faces of the famous, infamous and everyday people with extraordinary stories. There are more than 450 portraits on display, as well as regular themed exhibitions.

Nature Lovers TourSee the forest for the trees at the National Arboretum Canberra, with its 94 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic trees from Australia and around the world. You’ll be struck by the range of botanical beauty around the 250 hectare site, including the living artworks in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection.

Prior to the 2001 and 2003 Canberra bushfires, the Arboretum site was mostly covered in pine plantations. Following the devastating 2003 Canberra bushfires, the Australian Capital Territory Government consulted extensively with the community and experts about the best use of the large areas of land occupied by burnt-out pine plantations,

some of which were very close to Canberra.

Drop into the National Botanic Gardens where you can admire representatives of all the important species of Australian flora. The Rain Forest Gully is particularly impressive. Look for water dragons among the lush foliage. Other highlights include the Red Centre garden, with its red earth and spinifex grassland, as well as the Children’s Discovery Walk. The gardens are also a haven for birds and butterflies.

Sunday 1:00pm – 4:00pm @ $50 + GST per person (includes transfer to & from location and entry fee to venue, if applicable)OPTIONAL COACH TOURS - Subject to Minimum Numbers (if minimum numbers are not reached the tours will not run)

You can even join a tour of both chambers of Parliament. Explore the historic corridors of power at Australia’s first parliament, now known as Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. The museum tells the story of Australia’s democratic system since 1901 – the year Australia was federated – through portraiture, photographs, transcripts and events.

History & ScienceMore than a library, the National Library of Australia provides unparalleled access to Australia’s heritage including books, serials, maps, newspapers, music and ephemera. The National Archives of Australia, housed in Canberra’s original post office, is also home to documents from our history.
