ASMC, along with Grant Thornton LLP, is doing an *online survey of defense financial managers* <http://ASMC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0xMjk3ODc3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMjEzMTA0OTEmbGk9NTUwMDg0MQ/index.html>. This Defense Financial Management community survey should take only a few minutes to complete, and asks re-spondents about issues facing the financial community that relate to cost management and savings. Three ASMC chapters with the highest percentage response rate to this survey will receive a cash award. * 1st – $300 * 2nd – $200 * 3rd – $100 These awards will be based on the number of responses received per chapter divided by the total paid member-ship of a chapter as of April 15, 2011. An additional $200 cash award will be given to the ASMC chapter with the most responses. Please be sure to enter your chapter’s name when you fill out the survey. Access the survey before April 15, 2011! Aggregated results of this survey will be published and available on the ASMC website.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CY2010 Achievement Award
Winner, Business Management, Distinguished winner, Dr.
James Moyer, CDFM. Dr. Moyer is an ASMC Member and
is a business manager in PEO Aviation. He works for the
Aviation Maintenance Engineering Project Office under
Aviation Systems.
Amanda Bertus draws winners for
door prizes at the Mini-PDI.
Wow! Awesome!
Unbelievable! Way to Go!
Remarkable! Submitted by Beth Hodges, Chair, Training and
Education Committee (content edited for space allowance)
These are just a few of the expres-
sive words I used to describe the
members (Amanda Bertus, Chris
Harper, Dee Kowallik, Theresa
McBride, Debbie O’Neal, and Dana
Wilbanks) of the committee during
the planning and implementation of
the 2011 Redstone/Huntsville
ASMC Chapter Mini-PDI.
Can you believe we executed a
flawless Chapter Mini-PDI? What
an accomplishment from this small
group of stellar resource managers.
I cannot say enough about them and
the way they worked tirelessly, re-
spectfully, and cordially
What a theme…All Together Now:
Finance and Leadership in Support
of the Warfighter! Working col-
laboratively and cooperatively in
support of a common goal is what
our mission truly is about as we use
our knowledge and skills in support
of the Redstone/Huntsville Com-
munity and the Warfighter around
the world.
We had a challenge—to do a 1-
day format with multiple ASMC
National PDI Speakers. We had the
enthusiasm and the theme, but still
needed a prime location to provide
our speakers with a professional
and polished platform and provide
the seminar attendees with a com-
fortable and enjoyable environment.
I believe that we hit the mark on
location with the Jackson Center.
Theme, speakers, location…
what’s next? The vendors and
sponsors were an absolute necessity
and they certainly came through
with possibly the best door prizes
ever presented during a Mini-PDI.
However, they did not stop with
just the door prizes--they set up
booths and discussed some critical
concerns with a number of the at-
tendees. A huge thank you to all
the vendors and sponsors.
We were rounding out the needs
for the seminar and knew that the
ASMC National PDI Speakers were
confirmed. So we stepped up an-
other level by asking the Com-
manding Gen-
eral of AMCOM to be our luncheon
speaker. Not only did he say “yes”,
but “absolutely yes…would be de-
lighted to speak.” What better way
to express the training opportunity
theme than by bringing out the
books, ergo the centerpieces that
went to some lucky luncheon table
winners.
MG Rogers commented on the
books and bookmarks. I believe he
thought it was an impressive way of
carrying the theme in every aspect.
Awesome theme, unbelievable
speakers throughout the day, prime
location, supportive vendors and
speakers, and remarkable prizes to
win, what is next? You, the atten-
dees! We had 230 in attendance,
which is an astonishing number for
a Redstone/Huntsville Chapter Mini
-PDI.
Mr. Mark Easton, Deputy Chief
Financial Officer, Office of the Un-
der Secretary of Defense Comptrol-
ler), addressed a strong financial
strategy for the DoD. Audit Readi-
ness: The New Priorities – Finan-
cial Information We Really Use was
his theme as he opened the seminar.
He spoke to all levels within the
DoD about improving financial
management information, which
means M A R C H , 2 0 1 1 A S M C ‘ T R O L L E R
P A G E 3 VOLUME 16, ISSUE 9
changing the way we do business, envisioning the impact, and accepting the challenges and approach. With
these improvements, DOD believes that we will see faster progress and better results than past efforts. He
stressed that DoD knows this may seem simple in concept and difficult in execution but requires discipline,
persistence, and consistency.
Col “Chip” Fulghum, Director, Budget Programs and Integration,
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget, Office of the Assistant Sec-
retary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller…
whew, what a long title…spoke on the A.S.M.C.s of Leadership.
With laughter and personal interaction, Col Fulghum covered Atti-
tude, Service, Mentoring, and Communication. He presented an im-
portant topic in a very entertain-
ing approach.
MG James Rogers, Commanding General of AMCOM, covered leadership,
community, and warfighter support. The general understands what we do
and the significance of our contribution. Such a dynamic speaker and leader
of our local operation--Thank you MG Rogers.
Ms. Suzie Humphreys, national motivational speaker, had
us laughing and crying at the same time. I will forever remember “I Can Do That” with a
smile on my face…laughing as I type! The room was buzzing with such affection and ac-
knowledgement the entire time she was in motion. Everybody could relate to her story at
some level. Suzie was a wonderful way to move from a super luncheon (food, speaker, and
door prizes) to the afternoon sessions.
Col Barbara Gilchrist, Director, Defense Financial Manage-
ment & Comptroller School, closed out the seminar with a very appropriate
topic of time management. I really needed her guidance and key points as I
should have had this article written a week ago! Col Gilchrist also provided
some information on the Defense Financial Management & Comptroller
School, which is at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL. Please con-
sider applying for a course or program at this school. This is a golden oppor-
tunity, in proximity to our Community, to enhance your financial manage-
ment skills.
One last item…the charity of choice, Semper Fi Community Task Force. This was the first Redstone/
Huntsville Chapter Mini-PDI that included a charity as the recipient of some of our Mini-PDI profits. This was
indeed a tremendous way to support the Warfighter.
So what is the bottom line to this lengthy tale? Sign up early next year! You will not want to miss the follow
on version from the next T&E Committee.

Michelle Cobb, Corresponding Secretary
I was born in Memphis, TN, and moved to Huntsville when I was 2 years old,
so basically Huntsville is my home. I started my government career working
with the 176th Personnel Service Company in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1986.
I worked in the MILPO and processed Registrations of Birth for babies born
to soldiers while serving in Germany to register their birth as a US citizen.
You'd be surprised how many secrets came out in that process. Although I
was located in Bremerhaven, I worked directly with the US Consulate in Ham-
burg, Germany. I returned to Huntsville in 1988 and began work with Force
Development Division, Resource Management Directorate as a secretary. I
remained in FD for 22 years. Last year, I began working in AMCOM, G-3,
Program Integration Office as a Management Analyst. Through the years, I
have had many wonderful mentors. I have a BS in Business Management from
Athens and an MS in Management from FIT. My husband, Steve and I have
one son, Brad. He is a sophomore at The University of Alabama. I spend my
free time reading, gardening, and keeping the nursery at church.
