pirates of penzance

In March our talented Upper school stu-dents performed magnificently in Gilbert & Sullivan’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. The audience was wowed by the singing and acting of the students, as well as the live orchestra, amazing sets and costumes and, last but not least, the brand new wireless microphone

headsets recently purchased by the Performing Arts Committee. The sound quality was impressive, and emphasized the extraordinary talents of our young students, who were all between 12 and 16 years of age. This was an outstanding production, one of the best yet.

tech news

As always, ASM is looking to make use of the latest technology. We are investigating Quest Atlantis, which is “an international learning and teaching project that uses a 3D multi-user environment to immerse children, ages 9-15, in educational tasks”. Take a look to get a better idea: http://atlantis.crlt.indiana.edu/.

There will be new interactive whiteboards in school from September 2009. We already have a small number in the school and are looking to build

on this. This is just some of the new tech equipment arriving in August 2009.

ASM is in the process of setting up an official American School of Milan Facebook page and an ASM Alumni page. Look out for these… We will shortly be going live!

In recent months we have a new display of student artwork in the main corridor by the Cafeteria.

This is the start of ASM’s new Permanent Art Collection, whereby we ask the students to donate paintings, drawings and pho-tographs. Of course, we will be collecting many pieces that will be on future display in the new areas currently under construction.

math contest in belgium

In February, ASM’s High School Math team returned from a math competi-tion for 37 international schools, held in Belgium. Out of 73 teams ASM came in 6th overall in the team ranking!! This is a magnificent achievement and we are very proud of our students for performing so admirably.

high school varsity sport what is it?

ASM is the only English-speaking school in Milan fully equipped with its own 750 sqm gym (soon to be two gyms), playing fields and tennis courts, all on one campus.

Aside from a full after-school program with many varied activities offered throughout the grades, we run a competitive sports program for grades 9-12, known as Varsity. Teams play with other English-speaking schools in Italy and in Europe and we compete in soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross-country, basketball as well as cheerleading.

choir

Our School Choir this year has been singing in far-off places. At the beginning of the year they performed with other schools in Portugal and soon they will be heading off to Madrid. This is an-other invaluable opportunity for our students to visit other coun-tries and of course to work with other schools.

As we went to press, many of our 12th grade students had received ac-ceptances to many world-renowned universities, including:

Brown University, USA

University of California, Berkeley, USA

New York University, USA

Cambridge University, UK

University College London, UK

St Andrews University, UK

Bocconi University, Italy

These are but a few of our accep-tances and results are still incoming. What we can tell you is that most of our students are getting accep-tances at their first choice university which is our biggest priority.

2009 • Spring

We are delighted to report that at the beginning of March enrollment for next school year is very high, as predicted. We are currently full in several grades and waiting pools are in place for these classes. ASM is taking the lead as a top school for Science and Technology. Our new science labs will be a vital addition to the school, showcasing our com-mitment to educational excellence in science. We are also installing a number of interactive whiteboards in the school next year, to enhance learning, as well as develop further the technology program.

As of 2009 ASM will be offering IB Economics as well as a Business Studies elective. This is the start of a plan to expand our already rich array of electives and classes, especially in light of the new spaces that will become available for our students with the new construction project.

Congratulations to B@S ASM Team 1 (Seok-Yoon, Elena, Iacopo and Felipe) who have won 1st place in Phase II for the Business at School project run by Boston Consulting Group. The project has been running for 11 years in almost 80 schools all over the world, enabling students to compete and showcase their skills as business leaders of the future.

Our High School students recently went to Qatar to participate in a Model United Nations conference and in April students attended MUN in Dublin. MUN involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues, encourages the development of skills such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution and compromise and cooperation. This is a tough and rewarding program which is great preparation for university!

As a school, we are always trying to follow up on news of ex-stu-dents (our alumni). Recently we heard that Simon Franzini who left ASM 4 years ago, is about to graduate from NYU and has been accepted to a number of the top Law schools in the US, including Harvard Law School. We wish him well in his future studies – what a great achievement!

Another ex-student of ours, Filip-po Nicosia, is currently working for the Italian Foreign Ministry and he is currently posted to the Italian Embassy in China.

You may be interested to know that we currently have 12 stu-dents in school whose parents also attended ASM (most of whom still remember Piera and Santina in the cafeteria!) and we will have further additions of alumni chil-dren next year. We are so proud to hear about the successes of our students and to know that some also bring their children to ASM to relive the wonderful experience and opportunities it gave them.

One of our Lower Elementary classes held a Chinese New Year Celebration. The children made a large, green paper dragon and greeted guests including our Chinese High School math teacher Mr. Wei and amazing him with their knowledge of China and its

heritage. Their room was filled with lanterns and they served Chinese food to their guests. This was a wonderful opportunity for our young ones to learn about this great and ancient culture.

ASM’s talent show

Another great evening was had by students and parents alike! Students sang and danced and parents beamed with pride – this has been a great evening showcasing students as well as raising money for National Honor Society: just over Euro 1,800 was raised for the Associazione di Beneficenza Horizonte.
