CYBERSWINE ® Chapter #2454 St. Paul, Minnesota February 2016 The mission of the St. Paul Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) ® is to promote safe and responsible activities related to motorcycling for H.O.G. ® members; encouraging participation at all H.O.G. ® related events. Our goal is to create an increased level of interest for the sport of motorcycling and riding Harley-Davidsons ®, while representing the Chapter positively on a local, state and national level. At its most basic level, our mission is to "Ride Safely and Have Fun!" Director’s Letter Dave “Doc” Piltz, Chapter Director [email protected] Well it is another lovely early spring day in Minnesota (except it is January 31), the land of weather extremes. Just two weeks ago everyone was bracing for below zero temps and yesterday, I put 16 miles (15.6 actually) on my bike in 40 degree weather, with abundant sunshine. In checking my records, I have ridden my motorcycle at least 10 miles each month for the past 22 months. Maybe there is something to this global warming stuff! Whether you get your motorcycle fix from watching reruns of Sons of Anarchy or Renegade; changing your baby’s engine fluids; starting the engine just to hear the sound, visiting a local motorcycle show or actually going for a little scoot, I know many of you are doing something to enjoy the days of cold in anticipation of the warm weather ahead. One thing I might suggest is considering attending a nearby HOG® Rally this summer, in addition to the Minnesota HOG Rally in Eveleth. The Rallies are all different and it gives you a chance to compare and contrast (although ours is the best!). You can also think about where you would like the Chapter to ride this summer. Going to new places and sharing new places with others is always a blast, so let Bob Bruce (our Head Road Captain) or another Board officer or ride captain know of your idea. Long or short, easy or difficult, all rides can and will be considered. The Board will also be holding its annual Planning Meeting in February, so let us know if you have any other great ideas to pass on for consideration. This represents your chance to contribute to the Chapter in a way that might make it more interesting and exciting for you. It was good to see many of you at the Chapter Holiday Party last month. If you were unable to attend, you missed a great event with food, drink, dancing, karaoke and a couple of comedians to entertain everyone. Thanks to Big D and Patty Johnson and all the members of the Party Planning Committee for their hard work. It was a great event! Well, that’s all I have for now. Hopefully, there are only a handful (45ish) of days before the bikes can be uncovered and brought out into the fresh air and sunshine for your first ride of 2016. Until then, think warm and think spring! Doc

CYBERSWINE ® Chapter #2454 St. Paul, Minnesota February 2016

A Word from the Assistant Director Bruce Haroldson, Chapter Assistant Director [email protected] I hope everyone survived the New Year’s celebrations without too much trouble. How many of you are still writing down 2015 once in a while like I just did? Thankfully, spring is not that far off anymore and I know many of you are starting to plan rides for the summer. If you’re still looking for ideas, I have a couple for you. First is the Minnesota State H.O.G.® Rally on June 23 – 25 in Eveleth. Registration is now open at www.mnstatehogrally.com and although no schedule of events has been set yet, the organizers have mentioned some of the things they are thinking about and it sounds like it should be a great time. If you are planning on going, or even thinking about it, I urge you to get your lodging reserved now. Hotel space in the immediate area of Eveleth is in short supply and many of the hotels are already full. If you’re looking for something to do in July, I would suggest the Road Guardians River Road Fund Raiser in Galena, Illinois from July 15 – 17. It’s a nice ride down to Galena and participants stay at the Chestnut Mountain Resort on the banks of the Mississippi River. There is a lot to do with a poker run on some great roads, parties Friday and Saturday night, along with food, a silent auction and live music. The resort itself offers off road Segway tours, a zip line, Alpine slides and more. There is so much to do that we ran out of time last year to use all that was offered at the resort, we are headed down a day earlier this year. The best thing about the event is that it supports Accident Scene Management and it is their largest fund raiser of the year. For more information go to www.roadguardians.org and click on events. Speaking of Accident Scene Management (ASM), spring classes are now posted at www.roadguardians.org and ready for registration. As you may or may not know, ASM teaches what you can do in the event of a motorcycle accident until professional help arrives. Although the classes are designed for motorcycle accidents, many of the techniques learned in the hands on training relate to other types of accidents. Because many motorcyclists like to ride on remote back roads, medical assistance can take quite some time to arrive to an accident scene. Part of ASM’s philosophy is because another motorcyclist is often the first person on the scene of a motorcycle accident, it is important to get as many riders and passengers alike to be trained in the treatment of trauma type injuries associated with motorcycle accidents. That way, if involved in an accident, we may have a better chance of a good outcome. These classes are not intended to replace Emergency Medical Services, but rather they are designed to teach the average person what they can do until professional help arrives and then what to do to assist EMS, if needed.

Ladies of Harley ® Report Kayla Johnson, LOH ® Director [email protected] Hello All, I hope you are all surviving winter. I am looking forward to an early start to a great riding season this year. Up next for LOH® is our Pool and Dart event. The event will be held on April 2 at the Park Grove Bowl located at 1020 Hastings Avenue in St. Paul Park. I hope everyone will save the date! I do realize the event will be a little later this year, as Easter is the weekend before. This will give you a chance to enjoy the time with your families. I hope everyone can make the event this year. We had a great time last year and expect it to be even better this year. Our next LOH® meeting will be on Wednesday, February 17th at the Green Mill by the Shop (6025 Hudson Road). We decided to make this our monthly meeting spot for the year, and we switched meeting days to the third Wednesday of every month. I really hope to see many of you there as we will be discussing the LOH® Pool and Dart. Come join us for food, socializing and a quick meeting. Other than that, I hope you all have a great month and that I see you soon,

Kayla

2016 New Year’s Breakfast – 1-2-16

Road Captain’s Report Bob Bruce, Head Road Captain [email protected] Wow! Can you believe another month has gone by already. Every day we are getting closer to the 2016 riding season. I suspect it is less than 90 days away now! I want to thank those of you who have given me ride ideas, but we could certainly use some more from Chapter members. Once again, I am asking for your help to come up with more destinations. They can be long or short and new places or some that we may not have done in a while. We are also planning to do the Tuesday night Dinner Rides again this year, so if you know of any good places to eat within a 45 minute ride from the Shop, let Larry Maurus or I know. You can always email me at [email protected] with your ideas. So if you are looking for things to do in February, here are a few ideas to keep in mind. Running from February 5-7, is the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Minneapolis. If you go to their web site, you can get $4.00 off the $15.00 ticket price. On February 9 is the Tuesday night Dinner will be going to Cowboy’s Saloon in Lexington (3801 Restwood Road). We meet at the restaurant at 6:00 p.m. for dinner with friends and our extended Harley family. Finally, on February 28 is the Grounded HOG Bowling Tournament at Sun Ray Lanes. You can find more information elsewhere in this issue of Cyberwswine. One other item of note is that this month, St. Paul Harley-Davidson® will again be putting on seminars throughout the month on a variety of topics. To check out all the Chapter happenings, go to the St. Paul H.O.G. ® web site and check out the ride and event calendar. Click on the particular event and the time and place will show up. You will also find a lot of other information about the Chapter as well, so take time to look through the website and become familiar with the all the policies pertaining to the Chapter. Bruce and Sylvia Haroldson will be teaching Accident Scene Management again this year. If you have not had the opportunity the take one of their classes, this is something to seriously think about. If you ride with friends or family, you never know when an accident might happen. For the little time invested in taking this class, you could help save someone’s life. The concepts presented in the class will work for you whether you are on or off the bike and witness an accident; it always helps to be prepared for the unexpected. For anyone who needs to take the refresher course, there are two classes coming up in March on the 13th and the 26th. If you have any questions about the classes of how to sign up be sure to check with Bruce or Sylvia. That’s all I have for this month. Please be careful if you are shoveling and think Spring!

2016 Chapter Holiday Party

Historian’s Report Charlie Lindahl, Chapter Historian [email protected] Hello All! It's now February and although we cannot ride yet, there are a number of activities that might be of interest where you can get out with Chapter members and meet new riders (and potential members). The various bike shows coming to town soon to entertain us in our time of need include the Progressive International Motorcycle Show February and the Donnie Smith Custom Bike & Car Show in April. I would also recommend the Chapter’s Grounded HOG Bowling event at Sun Ray Lanes on February 28. See the calendar for more details. Since we have no new members to write about this month, I will cut you all loose early this month. Until next time, remember to dream, "RIDE HARD AND RIDE OFTEN"!

2016 Chapter Holiday Party

Safety Officer Notes Gary Bimson, Chapter Safety Officer [email protected] Happy February!! The days are getting longer and we are starting to have more daylight. That also means that many of us are starting to think about the new riding season. How are you getting prepared? Physical and mental conditioning are important and now is the time to start getting into shape. So what can you do?

1. Start going for walks… Outside or in the mall. 2. Work on mental puzzles. There are plenty of choices for these. 3. Start planning on the rides you want to take this year.

Continue to be safe and get in riding shape. The season will start before you know it. Thanks!

Gary
