GreenSeeker Handheld Crop Sensor
Daniel Rodriguez
AFFORDABLE AND EASY TO USE
Features• Lightweight and portable • Active light source optical sensor• Used to measure plant biomass/plant health • Displays NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) reading • Pull the trigger and NDVI measurement appears on LCD display
immediately.• Affordable, easy to use
GreenSeeker Handheld Crop Sensor
Key use continues to be in-season nitrogen management• Using algorithms developed or custom algorithms
Other uses for 2012• Variable rate fungicide & desiccantPrimarily Cotton• Crop condition mappingViticulture, raspberries, ginseng, blueberry, coli flour, broccoli• Application of growth rate regulator and defoliantsPrimarily cotton, canola
How are Producers Using GreenSeeker?
Sensor Tour
GreenSeeker Handheld Crop Sensor
Quick measurement • Hold the sensor over the crop canopy
and pull the trigger
• The sensor should be held at 24-48” above the crop canopy
• Observe the reading on the display
Using the Sensor
Averaged measurement To obtain a reading representing a largerArea or strip.
• Hold the sensor over the crop canopy and pull the trigger.
• Walk with the sensor while keeping the trigger engaged and maintaining a consistent height above the target.
• The display updates continuously, but accumulates multiple readings and provides an average when the trigger is released.
• The maximum measurement is 60 sec.
Using the Sensor
- Key use of sensor is to estimate fertilizer application rates.- Other applications include:
• Sensing and agronomic research• Biomass measurements and plant canopy variations• Nutrient response• Yield Potential• Pest and disease impact
- StrategyEducate the market about NDVI
• What is it?• What it can do for users?• How can it help them make better decisions?
Application of the Handheld Sensor
Generalized Algorithm The Generalized algorithm for Nitrogen Fertilizer Rates was developed by Oklahoma State University for the following crops:
• Spring wheat• Winter wheat• Dryland corn• Irrigated corn• Barley• Triticale• Sorghum• Canola• Rice
