Asia Pacific HR Newsletter

August / September 2011

Matthew Chapman Managing Director The Chapman Consulting Group The year is moving quick and it’s now time for our August / September HR update. Market activity in HR remains jittery, but still buoyant. The banking sector has largely put the brakes on with its HR hiring until either Q1 or market conditions stabilise. There is even talk of possible reductions in HR in some institutions in this sector. Outside of banking, HR hiring proceeds in most other sectors and markets, although as we move into Q4 we expect this hiring to transition to only essential hires. We are quite amazed at the amount of inter-market transfer of talent occurring from global markets to Asia Pacific. This trend is on two fronts. Firstly, Chinese and Indian HR talent in the US and Europe is being entice back to their home markets, and Global HR Leaders. Secondly, European and American HR talent (particularly at an early career level or late career stage) continuing to want to be in Asia. The Chapman Consulting Group's global team in the US is busy facilitating these movements. Cross-border rotation of talent within Asia also continues at a pace. We've often commented on the movement of Mandarin speakers between the markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Taipei. But we're also seeing a greater influx of South East Asian talent into these markets too, particularly at the regional middle management level. Even Japanese and Korean talent, both of whom have historically been under-represented at regional headquarters, are starting to become more geographically mobile in their future career planning. The Chapman Consulting Group has recently held a number of HR Leadership roundtables. Alongside our regular get-togethers in Singapore, we also held meetings in Jakarta (26 Jul), Beijing (28 Jul), Hong Kong (30 Aug), Seoul (6 Sep), Tokyo (7-9 Sep), Delhi/Gurgaon (12 Sep), Bangalore (13 Sep) and Mumbai (14-15 Sep). Full details of the discussions from these lunches are in our press release section. For the remainder of 2011 we have members of our team at HR Leadership events coming up (not including our regular series of events in Singapore): London (11 Oct); Shanghai (19-21 Oct); Austin, TX, USA (25 Oct); Hong Kong (10-11 Nov); Dubai (28 Nov); Melbourne (8 Dec) and Sydney (9 Dec). Details of these have and will be forwarded to our HR friends in these locations.
