  • project 1:FLIERDescription:A grayscale flier promoting a leadership conference for students nearing graduation

    Date:25 January 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:InDesign

Objectives:My objective in creating this flier was to inform students that a conference is being held to teach leadership skills to those who will soon be graduating. My objective in completing this assignment was to become comfortable with the Adobe InDesign program and practice the basic design principles.

Process:I began by sketching out all my ideas for the layout of the flier. I chose my best ideas and sketched more thought out layouts for them. Then I chose a layout from those four options and began designing on InDesign. I created all of my boxes and placed my images first so I could see my actual layout. Then I started applying grayscale and text to the shapes. I changed the fonts a a few times until I decided on a pairing that I liked. I decided to add the repeating squares to incorporate some repetition and balance. Lastly, I ended up switching the logo and link placements around a but until I felt more satisfied with the shape of my white space in the bottom left corner.

  • project 2:EVENT ADDescription:A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser

    Date:1 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft Word, scanner

Objectives:My objective in creating this event ad was to encourage my audience to recognize that there are individuals who dont have the same basic privileges they do and encourage them to use their privileges to help the less fortunate. My objective in completing this assignment was to learn how to design well in Microsoft Word in case a potential need arises during my future employment.

Process:I began by choosing an image from a National Geographic. I scanned it using the scanner on the first floor of the library, closely following the instructions posted on i-learn. I decided to use the image as a full background. Then I started my design by creating a logo. I decided to use the title Hungry Horizons so that I could play off the horizon in the photo. I combined the hs. I came up with a slogan and placed a black, opaque box behind it. Then I typed out all my information and placed it below the slogan but it was too had to read with out anything behind it. I decided to stretch the opaque box out so that it covered both the slogan and the body copy text, but it cut into the little girls head. So I decided to turn it diagonal. After meeting with Brother Kerr, he suggested keeping my title text white rather than coloring it. He also suggested aligning my body copy text with the vertical line of the side of the page rather than the diagonal line of the text box.

  • project 3:PHOTO DESIGNDescription:Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills.; incorporate color into a poster layout with original photo

    Date:8 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Photoshop, Photomatix, InDesign

Objectives:My objective in creating this design was to improve my photography skills.

Process:I took this photo with a Canon Rebel T3i for the photography activity this week. I used it for my project because there was negative space for text and I could make a complimentary color scheme work if I edited the colors in the blanket and her shirt a little bit. Editing the photo to make the color scheme work was definitely harder than I had expected. I had never used Photoshop before and although the tutorials were super helpful, I still struggled. It took a bit of experimenting but through some trial and error, I became comfortable with the program.

I used InDesign to create my poster. My biggest challenge was the color swatches. I forgot about them, so I accidentally designed my entire poster without the color swatches in mind. I had a hard time trying to incorporate them into the finished poster. I learned the hard way to make sure I have all of my elements included in my sketch. I did a little bit of rearranging, but I eventually figured out a placement for the color swatches that worked with the rest of my poster.

  • project 4:MONTAGEDescription:An inspirational montage made by blending two or more images

    Date:14 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Photoshop, InDesign

Objectives:My objective in creating this montage was to learn the masking tool in Photoshop.

Process:I began my process by choosing a theme and images that represented that theme. I decided how I could best blend those images. Then I opened the background image in photoshop. I placed the doorway on top of it in a separate layer. I added a mask to that layer. I used the mask to gradually blend the edges of my doorway. I chose text and fonts for my text then aligned it with the other elements of my montage. Last, I decided to use a filter on the doorway. I chose to use the motion blur because I thought it could help convey the theme of a busy, chaotic world juxtaposed with a peaceful home in nature. I created a new layer. I added the filter to that layer. Then I added a mask to that layer and painted out the parts of the image that I didnt want to be blurred.

  • project 6:BUSINESS CARDDescription:Three logo variations for the same company

    Date:22 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Illustrator

Objectives:My objective in creating this business card was to learn how to use the Illustrator program, especially the shape builder and pen tools.

Process:I started by sketching some ideas for logos. Next, I spent quite a bit of time with the Illustrator tutorials. Because the program was so different than InDesign or Photoshop, it took me a while to get used to it. I began designing. Once I did, I realized that a few of my logos might be too hard for me to design because I was having a really difficult time with the program. I took some more time to resketch some new logos and went back to the program.

  • project 6:LETTERHEADDescription:Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo

    Date:22 February 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Illustrator

Objectives:My objective in creating this letterhead was to learn the Illustrator program.

Process:I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator. I placed a photo of a honeybee to use as a reference. I drew circles and used the shape builder to connect them to create the body, head, and wings. I used the anchor select tool to smooth the edges. I used the pen tool to draw the legs and antennas, and add some fur. I used the text on a path tool to type my logo text.

To create the honeycomb on the back of my business card, I used the polygon tool draw a hexagon. I copy and pasted, being extremely carefully to align all the rows correctly. I made a few of them different values of purple to incorporate my color scheme better and to make it more interesting.

To create my letter head, I added the same honeycomb pattern, I had used on my business card, but turned the opacity down to about 13%. I had to turn the opacity on the purple squares down even further. I used the pencil tool with my surface pen to draw the line across the header, then made the stroke dotted.

  • project 7:WEB PAGEDescription:A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo

    Date:15 March 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01Cory Kerr

    Program(s)/Tools:Text Wrangler, Photoshop

Objectives:My objective in creating this webpage was to practice HTML and CSS coding.

Process:I created this web page using TextWrangler to customize my HTML and CSS codes. I had very minimal experience with HTML code beforehand. This experience taught me a great deal more than I previously knew. I feel much more confident in my knowledge of the basics and foundations of both HTML and CSS coding and customization. I look forward to building upon this knowledge in future classes.

First, I downloaded the HTML template. I organized the code with indentations. Then I edited the text and rearranged the headings. Next I downloaded the CSS template and attached it to my HTML document. I searched instructions to learn how to upload an image as a web page background through CSS. I used a site of free domain images to find one that went well with my logo and color scheme. Then I used the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to find the hex colors of my logo. I used these colors to customize the rest of my web page. Lastly, I customized my fonts using the website provided for help.
