The Imposition of Ashes

At Redeemer, as part of our Ash Wednesday devotion, we offer the opportunity to receive "The Imposition of Ashes" upon the forehead. The following is a brief explanation about this

practice. Q. Are the ashes "blessed?" Do they give a special blessing?

A. No. They are simply a physical symbol to aid in your meditation. The blessings we receive

are through God's means of grace, His Word and Sacraments.

Q. Do I have to receive them?

A. No! Any compulsion to receive the ashes would be contrary to the freedom we have in the

Gospel. They are simply offered as an opportunity for you. If they will help you, please receive

them. If not, please feel comfortable not receiving them. No one will think any less or more of

you if you do or don't!

Q. Do I have to leave them on?

A. No. You may wash them off at any time. Again, whatever it most helpful to you. In fact,

washing them off can be a joyous thing, as you remember that the water of baptism has

rescued you from sin and death!

Q. What about Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 6:16-18)? Those words read: "And

when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their

fasting may be seen by others. . . . But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

that your fasting may not be seen by others . . ."

A. These words of Christ refer to our motivation: "that you may be seen by others." If this is

why you want to receive ashes, to be seen by others, you should not receive them! This would

be contrary to the Gospel.

Invocation and Lenten Address

P In the Name of the Father and of T the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen

P Dear brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ, on this day the

Church begins a holy season of prayerful and penitential reflection. Our

attention is especially directed to the holy sufferings and death of our Lord

Jesus Christ.

From ancient times the season of Lent has been kept as a time of special

devotion, self-denial, and humble repentance born of a faithful heart that

dwells confidently on His Word and draws from it life and hope.

Let us pray that our dear Father in heaven, for the sake of His beloved Son

and in the power of His Holy Spirit, might richly bless this Lententide for us

so that we may come to Easter with glad hearts and keep the feast in

sincerity and truth.

P We pray… O God, You desire not the death of sinners, but rather that

they turn from their wickedness and live. We implore You to have

compassion on the frailty of our mortal nature, for we acknowledge that we

are dust and to dust we shall return. Mercifully pardon our sins that we may

obtain the promises You have laid up for those who are repentant; through

Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen

IMPOSITION OF ASHES

(During the Imposition of Ashes take a moment to reflect and pray on our Lord’s Passion

and the victory won for us on the cross. You may come forward at any time.)

Confession

P Do you confess to almighty God that you are a poor, miserable sinner?

C Yes.

P Do you confess to our merciful Father that you have sinned against Him

in thought, word, and deed?

C Yes.

P Do you confess that you justly deserve His temporal and eternal

punishment?

C Yes.

P Do you believe that our Lord Jesus Christ died for you and shed His

blood for you on the cross for the forgiveness of all your sins?

C Yes.

P Do you pray that God, for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter

sufferings and death of His beloved Son, be gracious and merciful to you?

C Yes.

P Finally, do you believe that my forgiveness is God's forgiveness?

C Yes.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and

ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you,

and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you

all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy

Spirit. C Amen.

+Liturgy of the Word+

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us Pray… Almighty God, the First Adam disobeyed You, barring

humanity from the tree of life and casting us into the dust of death.

Because You do not desire the death of any sinner, You sent your only-

begotten Son, Jesus—the Second Adam—to rescue and redeem us from

the curse of sin and death by having Him become our sin and die our

death. Grant that we, during this season of Lent and all seasons, follow

Jesus, whose obedience unto death, even death on the tree of the cross,

has earned our way back to the tree of life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son,

our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever. C Amen

Old Testament Reading: Genesis 3:1-15 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The LORD God said to the serpent,

Page 7: Ash Wednesday March 6, 2019 - Redeemer Lutheran ChurchP Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God

“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Epistle Reading: Revelation 22:1-5, 14 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.

Gospel During the penitent season of Lent, the Church omits the singing or the speaking of the word “Alleluia.” This ancient practice of refraining from using Alleluia during Lent is in order to distinguish the penitential nature of this season from the exuberance of the Easter season that follows.

Mark 1:9-13

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 1st chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord! In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Page 9: Ash Wednesday March 6, 2019 - Redeemer Lutheran ChurchP Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all

places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and

gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be

prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth.

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven

we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and

singing:

At Your command, Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on

the mountain; yet, in mercy You provided a ram as a substitute. We give

You thanks that on Calvary You spared not Your only Son but sent Him to

offer His life as a ransom for many. As we eat and drink His body and

blood, grant us, like Abraham our father, to trust in Your promise now

fulfilled in Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and

ever. Amen.

Statement on Holy Communion The Lord’s Supper is joyfully received here every weekend and on other holy days. At the altar, our Lord Jesus Christ delivers His true body and blood into our mouths. His gift of body and blood, given in, with, and under the bread and wine, bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives our sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. All members of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod have publicly confessed this sacred gift and its blessings, and so are encouraged to commune. Other guests wishing to join our confession and receive this Holy Sacrament are asked to meet with a pastor before communing for the first time. When you have examined yourself according to Christ’s bidding (1 Corinthians 11:17-34), come to His Supper rejoicing, just as Jesus asks, knowing that our Lord meets you at His altar with joy. Those coming to the altar for a blessing rather than the Holy Supper are asked to cross their arms over their chest.

Midweek Lent

Our midweek Lenten services will focus on “The Salutary Gift.” As we prepare to remember how our Lord’s flesh was pierced and blood flowed from the cross on Golgotha, we are reminded that every time we come to His Altar we are given that same body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of all of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. During these Holy 40 Day let us remember all of our Lord’s benefits, that still come to us each and every day. Join us each week for dinner at 5:00 P.M. and worship at 6:00.

Lenten Meals

We will be having soup and sandwiches before our mid-week

Lenten worship services. The meal will begin at 5:00pm and

Lenten Worship will begin at 6:00pm. Sign-up sheets for future

weeks are located at the Welcome Center.

Dominican Republic Mission Project – our new Horizon

Redeemer’s new mission project for the Dominican Republic

kicked off in mid-February with a request by the Mission Board

that the church support the many aspects of this project,

which is an outreach of the LCMS – South Wisconsin District.

For 2019, the Mission Board is challenging the congregation to

donate at least $5000, to be matched by the endowment fund.

Please see the display for the Dominican Republic mission

project at the Welcome Center, which will be updated

periodically over the first half of this year. There you can also

find special offering envelopes for your use in making gifts or

pledges (for future donations) to this important outreach.

The Mission Board wishes to thank everyone who is able to

support this outreach of the LCMS in any way, whether it be

monetary or in prayer. We pray that our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ, bless this continuing mission outreach of our church.
