WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS
From The Senior Pastor’s Desk March 2018
Word for the Month: JUSTICE
Scripture of the Month: Luke 10
Thought for the Month: Memphis in 1968 was ruled by a paternalistic "plantation mentality" embodied in its good-old-boy mayor, Henry Loeb. Wretched conditions, abusive white supervisors, poor education, and low wages locked most black workers into poverty. Then two sanitation workers were chewed up like garbage in the back of a faulty truck, igniting a public employee strike that brought to a boil long-simmering issues of racial injustice. Michael Honey brings to life the magnetic characters who clashed on the Memphis battlefield: stalwart black workers; fiery black ministers; volatile, young, black-power advocates; idealistic organizers and tough-talking unionists; the first black members of the Memphis city council; the white upper crust who sought to prevent change or conflagration; and, finally, the magisterial Martin Luther King Jr., undertaking a Poor People's Campaign at the crossroads of his life, vilified as a subversive, hounded by the FBI, and seeing in the working poor of Memphis his hopes for a better America.
Emphasis for the Month: Social Justice
Pastor’s Book of the Month: Going Down Jericho Road by Michael K. Honey.

MARCH IS NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH ALTHEA T. L. SIMMONS
The theme for the 2018 observance is Nevertheless She
Persisted: Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Nevertheless She Persisted is a phrase born in 2017 when Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, was silenced during Jeff Sessions’ confirmation hearing for Attorney General. Sen. Warren was reading an opposition letter penned by Coretta Scott King in 1986, opposing Sessions’ nomination as a federal judge. Referring to the incident, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, said “Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless she persisted.” The phrase was adopted by the women’s movement and used to refer to strong women who refuse to be silenced.
Throughout this month, the United Methodist Women of Asbury are recognizing women with
connections to our Church who persisted. We also give thanks for the ongoing persistence of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, neighbors, and friends.
Althea T.L. Simmons persisted as chief of the NAACP's Washington bureau and she served as the
organization's chief Washington lobbyist. Ms. Simmons joined the NAACP in the mid-1950s. Before moving to Washington, she was associate director of branch and field services in the organization's headquarters in New York. Her duties there included supervising branches and field staff around the nation, membership activities and the youth and college division.
Much of her most valuable work, however, was keeping track of policymakers in a quiet way. She
described this in a speech at an NAACP regional banquet in Northern Virginia in 1979. "It's not enough to just listen to the politicians at election time," she said. "Start monitoring how they vote. Often they will say something on the floor of the House or Senate just to get into the Congressional Record, but they vote just the opposite."
In 1989, she said it was necessary to keep up pressure on matters of concern to blacks and other
minorities "because if you don't, people will think the problem is solved." Born in Shreveport, La, Ms. Simmons graduated from Southern University and received a law
degree from Howard University. She also studied marketing at the University of Illinois. Her many honors included the President's Award of Washburn University, the Howard University
Alumni Award for Postgraduate Achievement in Law and Public Service, the Gertrude E. Rush Award of the National Bar Association, the Patricia Roberts Harris Award of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the National Trends and Services Award of Links, Inc.
Ms. Simmons was an active member of Asbury. She served as chair of the Administrative Board
and she chaired the celebration of Asbury’s 150 Anniversary in 1965. Proceeds from the 150th Anniversary celebration were used to create the Asbury Endowment Fund to support programs in education, outreach ministries, history, and heritage. Ms. Simmons also served on various committees of the United Methodist Church, including the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits, now known as Wespath. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Althea T. L. Simmons died in 1990 at the age of 66.
