Steps in conducting historical research:Step 1: Develop a paperwork management system-how will you keep your research notes? Google docs, notecards, or notebook-to be turned in.

Step 2: Select a TopicStep 3: Background Reading for Historical Context- conduct general research to help narrow your topic

Step 4: Narrowing Your Topic- choose something specific within the topic you’ve chosen.

Step 5: Gathering and Recording Information-take notes and keep track of all your sources.

Step 6: Analyzing and Interpreting Sources and the Topic's Significance in History-You will need to do more than describe events. Form a question of your topic and your research, considering the following:

1. Elements of change and continuity2. Historical context: economic, political, social and cultural atmosphere of the time period

Encourage students to interrogate their sources:

1. Who created the source?2. When was the source created?3. What was the intent or purpose of the source?

Step 7: Developing a thesis:The thesis statement is usually one sentence that presents an argument about the topic. The body of the paper or website, the script of the performance or documentary, the headings and captions in an exhibit then are used to support the thesis using evidence from the re-search.

A good thesis statement:1. Addresses a narrow topic2. Explains what the researcher believes to be the historical significance of

the topicStep 8: Finalizing your research project
