Make Plans to Attend Maumee's Parent Academy Parents, students, grandparents, aunts, uncles really everyone in the community is invited to the MaumeeCity Schools PARENT ACADEMY on Thursday, January 17 at Maumee High School.
The event begins in the PAC Lobby at 5:30 p.m. with an (optional) dinner provided by the Maumee S.A.I.L.Board. Breakout sessions begin at 6 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. There will be a drawing for door prizes.Reservations necessary. Sessions offered include: Dangers of Vaping: How to Talk to Your Kids & Recognize Devices Raising Socially & Emotionally Healthy Children Distracted Driving & Being a Positive Role Model Help for Parents Raising Teens Technology Benefits & Dangers for Kids Self Defense Childcare will be available (by reservation only) for children in kindergarten – 5th grade. Breakoutsessions are most appropriate for students in middle and high school. Watch for more detailed informationafter winter break.
Students are 'Finding Their Voice & Becoming MoreConfident Writers' Thanks to Ohio Writing ProjectBy Kaitlyn Pouter
Writing is a huge factor in everyday life and when a child is struggling, it poses a problem. That’s where theOhio Writing Project (OWP) comes in. OWP is a teacher professional development program that givesteachers new ways to engage students and increase their desire to write. OWP has trained more than100,000 kindergarten– 5th grade teachers. OWP best practices focus less on the mechanics of writing and
more on the content. All of Maumee’s elementary classroom teachers have been trained. SuperintendentTodd Cramer explains that, the Ohio Writing Project which is an initiative that supports teachers from acrossour state. It has been named one of the most effective and costefficient professional developmentprograms in the history of our country. "We are proud to bring this program to Maumee."
While grammar, spelling, and punctuation are still important, children are less likely to be discouraged byred marks on their papers when mechanics are not the sole focus. Michelle Shafer, Director of Teachingand Learning for Maumee City Schools, says students find more enjoyment in the art of writing when OWPtactics are used in a classroom. She explains one of the program tactics that involves the young writersparticipating in a “quick write.” Students are given a small passage, from which they selfselect a phrase ortheme and begin to build off what interests them. They write as much as they can for five minutes, simplyallowing the words to flow.
According to Mrs. Shafer, “Writing doesn’t have to begin when children understand all their letters andsounds. Maumee students are writing stories in kindergarten.” As an example, kindergarten classes will bewriting toy reviews after winter break. They will choose one toy they received and write a review to read tothe class. “Allowing them to give these reviews will boost their confidence in their ability to form cohesivethoughts and arguments and they will be writing about something important to them,” Mrs. Shafer adds.
OWP instructors are based at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and they have recently started work inNorthwest Ohio, and Maumee, Springfield, and Otesgo are the first area districts to have OWP trainedteachers.

Maumee City Schools congratulates WTOL News 11 reporter KelseyCogan and Toledo Blade reporter Jay Skebba for being named to the 2018 Ohio School BoardsAssociation Media Honor Roll. They were honored at the Board of Education meeting last night.

Maumee Residents Invited to Walk Indoors at Two BuildingsThe Administration Office Building gymnasium (716 Askin Street) is available for walking laps MondayFriday, 9 a.m. 3 p.m. Gateway Middle School (900 Gibbs Street) is available MondayFriday, 6 8 p.m.and the walking course loops through the building.
Administration Building walkers should enter through the main building doors and Gateway walkers throughDoor #15 on north side of school. Walkers are asked to sign in on the clipboard at the entrance. Pleasenote the walking hours may need to be modified because of holidays or conflicting events in the buildings.Schedule changes are posted near signin sheets. For more information call 4198933200.
