Mayworks 2019 Festival April 24-May 9 This year’s festival features a book launch by Bruce Campbell, an artist pop-up gallery, poetry by El Jones, a film about migrant workers in Canada, labour history, skill-building workshops, a ceremony for workers who have lost their lives while at work, and much more. Festival goers will learn about the issues facing today’s workers including worker safety, migrant justice and Black Lives Matter. Flights of Fancy Concert at Charlotte Street Arts Centre on April 25 at 7:30pm Symphony New Brunswick and Resonance New Music present an eclectic concert of music for the unusual combination of voice, violin, string bass and marimba. Well-known soprano Sally Dibblee will join Symphony members in a brand-new set of songs by New Brunswick’s senior and most prolific composer Michael R. Miller. Each song tells a small and intimate story, often invoking evocative images of nature. Also featured will be Three Preludes by George Gershwin played by violinist Danielle Sametz, percussionist Joel Cormier and Andrew Reed Miller on bass. Written in 1926, these timeless classics have the vibrant sound of Jazz-age New York. Tickets at the door. Back to top.

6. Upcoming Events at Connexion ARC April 25-30

April 25-30: Tracy Austin: Weight of Power Connexion Artist-Run Centre is pleased to present Tracy Austin's exhibition in our main programming space in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre during FLOURISH Festival. Weight of Power is a series of miniature couture textile sculptures that act as visual representations of the artist's ongoing struggle with depression, using fabric manipulation and embellishment techniques to invoke despair, destruction, and hope. Austin was the recipient of the annual Art Kitchen grant, a community-generated arts funding initiative started in 2017. Art Kitchen patrons gathered over a meal to watch project presentations by four artists; ballots were cast to determine the recipient of a grant from the evening's proceeds.

During Flourish Fest, Connexion will be open Friday & Saturday from 3-7pm in addition to our regular hours. An opening reception will be held Friday April 26 at 5pm. We are located in room 133 of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

13. Lintuhtine Melodies & Note-Ables present 10

th Annual Cabaret on Apr 27, 7pm, Centre Communautaire Sainte Anne

This performance is under the direction of Helen Miorag McKinnon, and will be accompanied by Lynn Mills and guest bass player, Conrad Levesque. It features many well-known numbers from musicals, movies, pop music, etc, such as “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, “Never Enough”, “A Million Dreams”, the music of the Beatles, a medley from Gershwin, and lots of costumes and choreography. Each year, an ethnic dance number is a hit. This year we will have a presentation of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand: the Maori. Another special feature is “Comfortably Numb” which will be danced under black lighting. Top notch choral singing, solos, duets, trios will entertain you as well. 15. odd sundays presents Phil Hall & Ian LeTourneau at the Tipsy Muse on April 28 at 2pm Phil Hall has been publishing poetry in Canada since the early 70s, and is the author of many books and chapbooks. His book of essay-poems, Killdeer (2011), won the Governor General's Literary Award for Poetry in English, as well as Ontario’s Trillium Book Award. He is the founder and Director of The Page Lectures at Queen’s University, and is concluding his year as Writer-in-Residence at UNB in Fredericton. Ian LeTourneau is no stranger to odd sundays. Besides being closely connected to our own Sherry Coffey, Ian is the author of Defining Range (Gaspereau, 2006) and Terminal Moraine (Thistledown, 2008). He is the poetry editor of UNB’s literary magazine, The Fiddlehead, and recently served as Fredericton’s Cultural Laureate. Back to top.

The group will be performing a diverse program of Baroque chamber favourites, including works by Bach, Handel, Buxtehude, Blavet, and more! All are welcome. Nasty Shadows presents A Story Jones: In memory of an Unseen Shadow at Memorial Hal on May 1-2 at 7:30pm A Story Jones is our Nasty creation celebrating the life and spirit of a Shadow who stepped into the light, our friend Andrew Jones. Jones is a storyteller, telling tales to a small friendly community in a world hungry for such gatherings, but tonight might be his last story. Vic has been selflessly caring for Jones, protecting Jones from outsiders when Chael suddenly re-appears in the story circle. Driven by forces beyond and within their control, Chael's dramatic purpose in the room precipitates the most inevitable conclusion, or so it seemed to suggest in the book.

The development of A Story Jones began with an idea in the spring of 2013. As the writing grew it was played off a number of veteran Shadows in various rehearsal rooms over the last few years and then finally worked into the play we now present. This is not a history; this is a fantasy story memorial. There will be only 20 seats per night and tickets are available in advance via e-transfer to [email protected] for $15 or $10 for students. Theatre St. Thomas presents #Swipers in the Black Box Theatre, May 2-4 at 7:30pm Witness the world premiere of #Swipers, written and directed by Corenski Nowlan, a romantic comedy for the Tinder generation! A light-hearted and geeky glimpse into the culture of online dating and how social media has changed the way we interact with others. Expect the unexpected. This is unconventional, immersive theatre. Through the use of lights, sound, projections, and masks, we are crafting a unique atmosphere that could unsettle some people. Content Warning: Recommended for ages 16-and-up. Moderate use of strong profanity, and safely choreographed fight scenes. Use of flashing lights. Workshop Presentation of Les filles du quoi?, May 3 at 7pm at Theatre Open Space An Anglophone with Francophone roots immigrates to Canada from the United States, a century after her great-grandparents immigrated in the opposite direction. She has questions: What does “Francophone” mean? What’s the deal with the queen? Why is Jack Kerouac the only Franco-American anyone’s ever heard of? Is Céline Dion a witch? With this new comedic, intimate, and bilingual one-woman show, Franco-American writer and performer Abby Paige looks for answers and finds connections between the living and the dead, the past and the present, History (L’Histoire) and stories (les histoires). A Monster House Publishing Showcase at The Abby on May 4 at 11am To celebrate another year of amazing children’s stories with East Coast artists and authors, Monster House Publishing will host an afternoon of art and stories from the Monster House catalogue. This event will showcase original artwork from the artists that have illustrated titles in the catalogue, as well as some that are yet to be released. All artwork is for sale, so you could take home a part of your child’s favourite book! That’s A Wrap!: A TNB End-of-Season Party at Charlotte Street Arts Centre on May 4 at 6pm Theatre New Brunswick announce an end of season fundraising party featuring refreshments, performances, raffles, music, and more! Sharing Our Stories (SOS) Writing Group starting May 4 at Shannex Parkland Fredericton from 2-4pm Have you had an interesting life or life experiences that you would like to share with family, friends or others but never seem to get around to composing your story? Shannex Parkland is once again hosting the very popular Memoir Writing Group on the first Saturday of each month in the Centre for Excellence in Regent Hall. Coordinated by a writing teacher, journalist and accomplished author, the group provides the impetus and moral support to start writing your life story to share with loved ones and for posterity. Atlantic Ballet Atlandique Canada presents Figaro at The Playhouse on May 4 at 7:30pm A marriage of the satirical Beaumarchais play with music of Mozart at his most lyrically beautiful, this is a timeless comedy about the foibles of lovers where the tables are turned on just about everyone. Max Amini’s Authentically Absurd Tour at The Playhouse on May 9 at 7:30pm International sensation, world touring actor, host, and comedian Max Amini brings his highly anticipated tour to Fredericton. Harmony Productions Presents Next to Normal in the Tom Morrison Theatre, May 9-11 Harmony Productions, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick's Mental Health Week, is excited to launch their company with the captivating hit show Next to Normal. Next To Normal is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to care for each other and survive with their spirit intact, while dealing with the pain that cripples their family at its core. The story concerns a mother, Diana, a suburban housewife who struggles with a worsening bipolar disorder. This, coupled with hallucinations that stem from trauma, and the intense rounds of psychotherapy she must undergo, affects her compassionate but frustrated husband, Dan and their alienated daughter Natalie, both of whom suffer by comparison to the superhero image she has created for her son Gabe. 1. Spring Fibre Art Classes 2019 Classes with Kathy Tidswell

Wednesday, May 15: Sun Printing and Other Fabric Painting Techniques Learn to paint using Pebeo setacolor fabric paints on cotton. Special effects techniques such as sun printing and using salt will be explored. Create your own fabric for a special landscape, shaded fabric for a flower you wish to appliqué, yardage for a special sky or backgrounds for an embroidery. You will learn how to mix colours and apply the paints. A demonstration using Derwent Inktense pencils will also be given. Comprehensive notes provided.

Storytellers of Canada Conference at Marshall d’Avary Hall, UNB, June 5-9 Storytelllers of Canada/Conteurs du Canada welcomes local educators, storytellers and listeners to single ticketed events joining members from across Canada as part of their national conference for 2019. The Conference’s 2019 theme is on storytelling in educational settings organized by SC-CC volunteers with our generous co-host, the Faculty of Education, University of New Brunswick. 1. Call For Applications: Fredericton Arts Alliance’s Artists in Residence Summer 2019 Theme: Trees Deadline: Applications must be received no later than 4pm on Friday, May 24, 2019. The Fredericton Arts Alliance invites applications for our 18

th Artist in Residence Summer Series. Accepted artists receive a $450 honorarium

and can sell their work. We seek emerging and experienced artists working in any media, including architecture, performance, sculpture, music, dance, electronic media, literary arts, visual art, fibre arts and fine craft. We encourage artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. This summer our theme will be Trees. We invite artists to reflect, as they work, on what trees mean to Fredericton. As different artists in varied media focus their creative energies on this theme, we hope to engender discussion among the artists and members of the public, both local and visitors, who visit the studio over the summer. The residences, two at a time, will take place in the Casemates in the historic Garrison District, from June 24 to September 2, 2019. Each residency lasts for one week. Interested artists should say how they intend to approach the theme in their written application. 6. Call to Artists: Salt Spring National Art Prize The Salt Spring National Art Prize is one of Canada’s largest visual art prizes, offering $40,000 in awards. Submissions for the 2019/2020 awards begin on January 10 and end May 31, 2019. The awards include:

Salt Spring Prize: The Joan McConnell Award & Residency for Outstanding Work is valued at $20,000 ($15,000 and a $5,000 Salt Spring Island artist residency).

Jurors' Choice Awards consist of four awards of $3,000 selected by each juror.

People's Choice: Rosemaria Behncke Awards are three awards, determined by a vote of visitors to the exhibition. 1st

prize is $3,000, 2

nd prize is $2,000, and 3

rd prize is $1,000.

Salt Spring Artists Award is for outstanding work by a Salt Spring Artist, and is valued at $2,000. 7. Call for Applications: Nel Oudemans Award The Board of Directors of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation renews its commitment to the applied arts through enhanced funding to the Nel Oudemans award. The annual winner of the award will receive a cash prize of $2,000. In conjunction with the $2,000 award, the recipient of the Nel Oudemans Award is eligible for additional funding to support an approved educational conference within one year of the award. Arrangements will be made through the Executive Director of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation The Nel Oudemans Award was established in 2002 to honour acknowledges the extraordinary contribution of Fredericton weaver Nel Oudemans to Canada’s applied arts field. Her memory is honoured each year through this award in celebration of excellence in fine craft.
