Jacquelyn Carmen Guerrero’s new exhibit recontextualizes and reimagines protective talismans, symbols, and practices from the Caribbean diaspora. The artist will simultaneously explore the connections between Caribbean and global themes in protective symbolism and practices. The exhibition will open March 10 at Elastic Arts with an educational performance and sound piece by Guerrero.

Jacquelyn Carmen Guerrero, aka CQQCHIFRUIT, is an artist, DJ, performer, and reiki practitioner originally from Miami, FL. Their practice centers on rediscovering and reclaiming the cultural, spiritual, and artistic legacies of their queer, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican intersection. Jordan Martins is a Chicago-based visual artist, curator, educator, and musician. He received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, in 2007 and has been an instructor at North Park University since 2008. He co-founded the Comfort Music series in 2011 and is currently executive director of the Comfort Station. MEET OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR,

ADAM ZANOLINI!

Adam Zanolini is an ethnomusi-cologist, multi-instrumentalist, and arts administrator based in Chicago. He received his PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2016. He is the former Associate Director of Arts for Art, which has presented the world-renowned Vision Festival of avant-jazz in New York City each year since 1996. He is also cofounder of the Participatory Music Coalition and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

Adam says his passion for creative improvised music and art was one of the things that drew him to Elastic Arts: “The work that goes on here is thrilling and inspiring!” Another was the portrait of Fred Anderson hanging in Elastic’s office/green room, since Anderson’s old Velvet Lounge, Adam says, “is where my love for this music began!”

Elastic Arts is excited to present our third annual Exposure Series, featuring local and international artists working at the forefront of the creative music field. The annual residency is designed to expose Chicago-based practitioners and audiences to a variety of processes and working methods through a period of intensive rehearsal and performance with guest musicians. The goal is to encourage an exchange of ideas and approaches that will have a long-term impact on both the local scene and the visiting artists. In addition to pairing these improvisers with their Chicago counterparts at Elastic Arts, we’ll also be presenting them in regular working contexts of their own at our partner venues, including The May Chapel in Rosehill Cemetery, The Hungry Brain, and Experimental Sound Studio as part of The Option Series. About The ArtistsBrandon Lopez (Brooklyn, NY)

Described by the Village Voice as an “ubiquitous free improv bass ace” and said to play with a “bruising physi-cality” by the Chicago Reader,

composer and bassist Brandon Lopez is dedi-cated to the exploration of left-of-center music. Lopez has performed widely across the United States and Europe. Recent appearances in-clude the 2017 Ljubljana Jazz Festival and St Johan im Tirol's artacts 2017. Lopez is a 2017-2018 resident artist at Issue Project Room and has recently released a new album with his trio The Mess on the Manchester-based label Tombed Visions. He’s had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s luminary weirdos and performs regularly with Nate Wooley, William Parker, Chris Corsano, Peter Evans, Weasel Walter, Tyshawn Sorey, Gerald Cleaver, Hamid Drake, Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey, Tony Malaby, Paul Lytton, Mette Rasmussen, Jooklo Duo, Michael Foster, Leila Bordreuil, Joe Morris, Brandon Seabrook, John Dikeman, and many others. In addition to his work as a performer, Lopez has curated several concert series in Brooklyn, NY, including the now defunct Thursday night series at the Manhattan Inn.

Molly Jones (Detroit, MI)Molly Jones is a Detroit-based composer, per-former, and improviser who works with saxo-phones, flute, and electronics. Her composi-

tions range from through-composed chamber works to graphic scores to electro-acoustic environments for improvisation incorporating video and audio samples. Some of her working ensembles include the Gabriel Brass Band, a sixth-generation New Orleans brass band; Rhyta Music, a Balkan brass band; ParkJones, an electroacoustic duo with Joo Won Pak; and Hamsters in Honey, a duo with Elizabeth Erickson. She also cofounded and codirects the Detroit musician collective Polyfold. Polyfold is currently comprised of 18 impro-vising musicians and produces concerts and recordings, hosts outreach events and educa-tional workshops, and fosters creative com-munity in Detroit and beyond. Her newest album, Microliths, came out in 2017. She also produces a zine called Moon Jar and is working on an upcoming opera-ballet with a planned debut in 2018.

Luke Stewart (Washington, DC)Multi-instrumentalist Luke Stewart is a DC-based musician and organizer. In a 2017 profile, the Washington Post described him as “holding down the jazz scene,” while Washington City Paper named him “Best Musical Omnivore” in its 2017 “Best of DC” issue and “Jazz Revolutionary” in its 2014 “People Issue,” citing his multifaceted cultural activities. Stewart’s regular ensembles include Trio OOO with leg-endary DC free jazz saxophonist Aaron Martin; Six-Six, a duo with guitarist Anthony Pirog; indie

band Laughing; experimental jazz trio Heart of the Ghost; and ex-perimental elec-tronic group MOM^2 (Mind Over Matter, Music Over

Mind). As a solo artist, Stewart has directed recent efforts toward a series of improvisational sound structures for upright bass and amplifier, utilizing the resonant qualities of the instrument to explore real-time harmonic and melodic possibilities. He has performed at many of Washington’s high-profile venues, including the Kennedy Center, the Atlas Performing Arts Center, Smithsonian Portrait Gallery, 9:30 Club, and Black Cat, as well as at many spaces in DC’s storied DIY community. Stewart is also a presence in the greater community of creative musicians, with regular multicity ensembles including Ancestral Duo, Irreversible Entanglements featuring Moor Mother, James Brandon Lewis Trio, and Heroes Are Gang Leaders, and he has performed in myriad other notable collaborations. He has been a featured artist at the Vision Festival, Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music, High Zero Festival of Experimental Improvised Music, Fields Festival, Philadelphia Free Form Festival, Forward Festival, and Furious Flower Poetry Festival. He has made overseas performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Toulouse Jazz Festival, Vitoria Jazz Festival, Belgrade Jazz Festival, and Rotterdam Jazz Festival. As a scholar/performer, he has performed and lec-tured at Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Medgar Evers College, George Mason University, Wayne State University, University of Montana, New Mexico State University, and the University of South Carolina. In addition to his work as a performer, Stewart has been a lynchpin within the DC community, producing hundreds of concerts affiliated with NFP Capitol Bop, as well as at DIY venues Union Arts and Rhizome. He is currently pursuing a master’s in arts administration at the New School for Social Research in Manhattan while commuting from DC so as to maintain his pres-ence in the scene there.

Michael Foster (Brooklyn, NY)Michael Foster is a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist working in the fields of free improvisation, noise, free jazz, graphic and

video notation, performance art, and other forms of weird music. Foster utilizes extensive preparations of his saxophone, augmenting it with amplification, objects, balloons, drum heads, vibrators, tapes, and samples as a method of subverting and queering the instrument’s history and traditional roles. Foster also cofounded and cocurates Queer Trash, a series that showcases LGBTQI+ artists engaged with experimental performance. Queer Trash has been selected as Issue Project Room’s 2018 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow in Residence. Current ensembles include duos with Lydia Lunch, Leila Bordreuil, Ben Bennett, Ted Byrnes, Richard Kamerman (as The New York Review of Cocksucking), The Ghost, Barker Trio, While We Still Have Bodies, and Weasel Walter

Large Ensemble. He has performed with Psychic TV, Han Bennink, Michel Doneda, Marina Rosenfeld, Steve Swell, Spiritualized, William Parker, John Wiese, Peter Evans, Jim Sauter, and many others.

Tashi Dorji (Asheville, NC)Tashi Dorji grew up in Bhutan, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. He’s lived in Asheville, NC, since 2000, soaking up a

vast array of music. Along the way, Dorji devel-oped a playing style unbound by tradition, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His record-ings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition, as Dorji keys into his own inner world. His compo-sitions drag the listener into a labyrinth of war-bling tones, where each sound seems to jump out and replace the eerie silence that would otherwise occupy the atmosphere. The textures remain sustained in the reverberation as the vibration of the strings dwindle and ascend. The experience is one equally disorienting and reflective, in which Dorji’s musicianship brings haunting beauty and mindfulness to the listener. After a handful of releases on various labels since 2009, Dorji presented his debut LP on Hermit Hut, the label created by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) in 2014. Since then, Tashi has released music both as a soloist and with duo projects, notably with percussionist Tyler Damon and MANAS (w/ Thom Nguyen) on labels including Bathetic Records, Cabin Floor Esoterica, Blue Tapes, Marmara Records, Feeding Tubes, UNROCK, VDSQ, MIE, Ultra Violet Light, Family Vineyard, and Astral Spirits.

Steve Baczkowski (Buffalo, NY)Steven Lee Baczkowski (b.1975) saxo-phonist, multi-wind instru-mentalist. Baczkowski began playing alto saxophone

at age 8 and switched to baritone by the time he was 12. He studied music in high school at Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts and went on to studies in music, saxophone performance, literature, and ethnomusicology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1999, Baczkowski became the Music Director of Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, a 40-year-old, multidisciplinary, nonprofit, artist-run cul-tural organization in Buffalo (www.hallwalls.org), where he has since produced and pre-sented hundreds of concerts of contempo-rary music as well as numerous community-based artist residencies. In addition to organizing multiple ensembles, such as The Buffalo Improvisers Orchestra and the Buffalo Suicide Prevention Unit, Baczkowski also performs solo, in trio with percussionist Ravi Padmanabha and bassist Juini Booth, in duo/trio with guitarist Bill Nace and drummer Chris Corsano, and in several other groups. He has collaborated with many mu-sicians from around the world and has ap-peared at festivals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
