Kim Losse (juror)

PO Box 216

Dallas, WI 54733

Topic: The Business of Art: It doesn’t just happen!

Steve seemed to have a very cavalier attitude toward judging. He did mostly the 20 art and made

some evaluations. I thought were overly generous or entirely off base. His presentation was poor.

He offered a power point handout produced by his wife I would imagine. It was thorough and on-

topic, but he was not prepared to show it, nor did he ever allude to it. His talk wandered through

irrelevant reminiscences of his college days! The good news is that Steve is both a photographer

and painter, and Kim a poet and printmaker.

Kim did a very thorough and conscientious job judging and as a presenter. He did well bringing

Steve back on track when he wandered and digressed. He also offered constructive comments on

procedures.

position. She showed her sketches and finished a painting done on-sight, shared her experiences

with the park staff and showed the places where she lived when in the park. The presentation

was very informative. Kristen is an excellent speaker and kept the audience laughing and

attentive throughout her program. Kristen was also the judge. Her critique was very informative.

Kristen stayed at the venue until everyone had a chance to ask questions after the critique was

completed.

very detailed and gave excellent comments on artist’s work. She congratulated them and

indicated how local artists are “getting it all together”. She said that “as several paintings sold, it

847/546-6031

[email protected]

Topic: Watercolor demonstration. David did a nice job with the watercolor demo. He was all

prepared and was able to complete a piece within the time allowed.

David seemed insecure about judging photography and the photographers were not happy. He

seemed to be able to justify the selection in other media although I questioned some of the

choices.

enjoyed seeing her process and also very much liked her artwork. As a juror, there were mixed

reviews about her critiques. Maybe a form for the jurors to fill out would be help them be more

specific in their explanations. Overall this artist was pleasant and very talented but needed lots of

follow-up with the coordinator throughout this process. I think she is a great guest artist but

wouldn’t use her as a juror.

LaCrosse – June 21, 2014

Ellen Roles (artist)

LaCrosse, WI

Topic: To Plan or not to Plan”. Content to basic – most attending far beyond content.

Ellen Roles and Mary Ann Narveson

Well I will never hire local judges. Both of them knew everyone ln the list. All but one of Mary

Ann’s recruits for show won an award. Ellen had several people she knew, many students of her.

I guess show wasn’t big enough to eliminate who knew who. Also, jurors didn’t evaluate two

people (artists) one because it was coordinator and one was juror’s husband (Mary Ann’s).

After the jurors did their job I was told I didn’t receive feedback because of my coordinator

status. Things were quite rocky for a few days – I really don’t think Mary Ann is happy with

WRAP guidelines for coordinators. However, Ellen and I never really connected for the event.

There was so much behind seens. The two jurors communicated back and forth completely left

me out of decision making process. I didn’t get to bring out my ribbons for artists at John

Ready’s okay – Jurors not happy about it, but it was done. Overall show and exhibitors very

happy.

Ingrid is well known locally for her precision in watercolor painting flowers. She brought fresh

flowers to the workshop for participants to paint from life. After a brief yet entertaining first

demonstration, the workshop participants began to paint. Her experience and skill make the

process seem easy and carefree. We all tried to mimic her body stance, brush loading, and arm

gestures. After two more demonstrations to show how the layering of watercolor washes

processes, we all left with a finished still life painting. It was a challenging, fun and successful

workshop.

The juror was also Ingrid Dohm. Although we only had 18 participants in the show, it was some

of the highest quality work. The audience appreciated all of Ingrid Dohm’s suggestions and

Presentation by M. Virginia Epps was just wonderful. The slide presentation held the audience’s

attention and, in fact, they showed their interest by speaking out with comments and asking

questions. A student assistant, Sara Hoag, assisted Virginia and was a great help. Ms. Epps

showed slides of her “painting” with brown paper bags, how she used quilling to emphasize areas

in her pieces. Also, she had slides to show her tools and passed out hands-on examples. Virginia

has a vivacious personality and, it showed. The presentation couldn’t have gone better.

Professor Mertens gives an excellent critique that holds the interest of all the artists there. His

comments on a particular piece of art involves everyone. They are remarks that each of the

artists can take away and apply to their work. He is able to comment on each painting and not be

influenced with perhaps some knowledge of the artist.

Janet outlined the criteria she had used to pick award winners, and pointed out that these were

her opinions. She lead a thoughtful discussion and had each artist tell the background story and

techniques they had used for their pieces. This was wonderful, and often sparked deeper

understanding of the piece and/or discussion on techniques and exploration of new medias.

Woodruff – November 3, 2012

Topic: What is it? Bob did an excellent job telling us of his journey on becoming an artist and

culminating with his latest project of writing, illustrating, and publishing a children’s series of

books with the dyslexic child in mind. It was very enlightening.

I was pleased with the job Bob did of the judging. His critiqu4es were very informative. He gave

his reasons of why a piece was picked for state and others were not. He judged on the whole

package and gave valuable information on framing also.

Fond du Lac – October 27, 2012

Leah Klapperich (artist & juror)

Marian University

Topic: Creativity from the Inside Out. About 30 people attended the workshop and they wre

delighted with Leah’s presentation.

Wausau – December 29, 2012

David Hummer – (artist & juror)

[email protected]

Topic: How to help yourself decide what media you truly want to work in. Also, tips on framing

economically but professionally.

We had a small group (9-10) due to the holiday season and snowstorm. But even those who were

going to leave early, stayed to listen and question David. Because he has owned and run galleries

in Milwaukee and Chicago, David knows what he likes and what he feels deserves awards. He

did well though, as someone making his living as an artist, helping all of us “non-pro’s” with

helpful suggestions and economical hints for us also.

Coordinator comment. The Center for Visual Arts loft is a great gallery space but the time we

could book it was rough. Full holiday season – hard to find a juror (our juror was the 5th

person

we contacted.)

Whitewater (winter) – January 29, 2011

Eric Appleton

(262) 472-5571

[email protected]

Topic: Art – Design – Collage. Eric involved the artists in a drawing project. Fun!

Spoke on his favorite way of doing collages and set design. Lots of audience involvement,

questions and answers. He was exceptional and knew his art although he is primarily a theater

person.

Prairie du Sac – February 19, 2011

John Ribble

702 Baltzell St.

Madison, WI 53711

608/692-1509

[email protected]

Topic: “Plein Aire Painting for Wisconsin in February”. Great. I feel like the group got the

world’s best “basic art info lesson in an hour” talk. Then John demonstrated a soft pastel

landscape from a photo using his “set-up” for outdoor painting. The amount of information

shared was incredible! Tips, brands, secrets.

John did a great job balancing his reasons and the artist’s intents. He was not afraid to tell artists

what could be done to improve, but also what really worked. He encouraged discussion and kept

it really fun!

Mineral Point – February 27, 2011

Pamela Callahan

4568 County Road Q

Highland, WI 53543

608/935-5114

[email protected]

Workshop topic: Exploring abstraction.

Pam showed slides of her work and explained her progression from figurative work to

abstraction after which participants had a chance to try out a number of exercises in a non-

intentional mark making. I think this was useful for some3 but perhaps a bit baffling for other

more representational types.

Pam did a fine job of discussing the artwork and showed an evenness for appreciating all types of

art whether representational or not. I think the artists who have experimented with abstract art

especially appreciated the opportunity to have an exchange with an abstract artist.

Wendy Powalisz (artist & juror)

8055 Highway B

Land O’Lakes, WI 54540

Cell: 715/493-5361

[email protected]

Topic: Liquid latex as a resist for watercolor paintings.

She gave an excellent workshop. She demonstrated the technique that she uses in her painting.

She had supplies and everyone had a chance to experiment with this technique.

Wendy’s critique was also very helpful and encouraging for our artists. She also stressed the

presentation of their paintings, commenting on framing and matting. Everyone enjoyed the day.

Wendy is a full time artist living in Land O’Lakes. After years of independent study and

exploration of various art forms, watercolor has become her “muse” and medium to follow. It

was classes with Eagle River artist Jane O’Brien that gave Wendy the confidence to exhibit and

sell her work.

She was a part of the Studio Gallery in Boulder Junction for eight years and is currently with

Artistree Gallery in Land O’Lakes. She has shown her work in local, regional and national shows

and especially loves to travel with the Art Gypsies. Sharing her love of creative expression with

others has led to teaching privately, and for the non-profit arts organization, (LOLA) Land

Nancy did a watercolor demonstration on an upright easel. She offered technical advice,

answered questions, told interesting stories from her classes and seminars. She nearly finished

the painting and what was completed was excellent. Many of the artist remained after the

demonstration to ask more individualized question. The painting was a larger piece from a

smaller study.

I have seen Nancy demonstrate before and I am always impressed with it. We will definitely

have her again in the future.

Lorin did an excellent job. Because of the number of paintings and sculptures he went twice to

the art center, spending 3-4 hours each time. There 104 two-dimensional pieces and 5 sculptures.

His critique was excellent and there were many good comments from the exhibiting artist. I was

also extremely pleased with his handling of the questions asked after the critique. We were on a

time schedule and had to move the critique along rapidly. The room was to be used by the Bell-

Canto Choir before their performance and we had to vacate by 3:00 pm.

Presentation of personal artwork and favorites followed by critique of one piece of art for each

participant. Excellent critique and especially liked the idea of critiquing one piece for each

exhibitor besides the award winning pieces. Some thought this was the best show sponsored by

our Art Club and liked the idea that the show was up for two weeks for viewing by the general

public. The guest artist and judge provided a slide show of her own works and works of special

interest to her. It was suggested that a screen for the slide show would have helped the

presentation and an easel for the critiques would have been beneficial.

Topic: Her work as student and professional. This laptop slideshow was very well received. The

slides showed her progress, her frustrations etc. Also, she brought in copyrights, etc. She

answered artist’s questions when asked. She showed, but did not comment at that time, the

artwork exhibited. Excellent presentation.

After lunch, Mary Diman gave a critique of the state and honorable mention awards. She

willingly critiqued all artworks and answered any questions. Mary wasx wel versed in art. This

showed in the fine way she handled the critique. Very conscientious and considerate.

Note: There wasn’t anyone who voiced an objection to submitting just one artwork. I thought it

improved the quality in spacing and bringing the “super” artwork.

Carole Spelic served as Guest Artist and juror for the Richland WRAP 2010. Carole is director

of the ArtsBuild Program, Office of continuing Education, University of Wisconsin-Platteville

and is co-owner of the Green Lantern Gallery in Mineral Point, WI. She has more than 20 years

experience as a gallery manager, owner, juror of art exhibits, and art workshop leader. Her topic

for the Richland WRAP 2010 was “Presentation of Art to Galleries.

Carole did an absolutely stunning job. She has a very friendly and supportive style of

presentation. Artists were encouraged to ask questions to which she responded with ease and

clarity. As one artist remarked to me, “She is so articulate. I really learned a lot” This was true in

her explanations for her selected winners and in discussing the artistic aspects of the remaining

art pieces. I found her to be supportive of the artists’ efforts and encouraging in her comments.

I certainly would encourage other WRAP coordinators to invite Carole as their Guest Artist

She gave very constructive and instructive comments during the critique.

With 25 people in attendance we enjoyed a presentation by our juror and guest artist, Alice

Tzakais. She showed us an amazing array of book art that she has done for many years. She

teaches these techniques to her grade school children, incorporating principles of good art. She

also does workshops which take longer than our time allowed. She has used her imagination and

art background to paint paste paper for coverings, make handmade paper and assemble these

amazing books in many different fashions. We were all enthralled with her ingenuity and

enthusiasm. After lunch we had our critique which was very informative and instructional.

Topic: Conte crayon portrait. The workshop demonstration was put on by Joyce Eesley. She

graduated with a BFA art education major (certification K12). Her workshop presentation was a

portrait in Conte Crayon of one of the artists. She talked a little about her background, showed

some of her work and talked about the portraits she did. She was an excellent choice. Her

answers to all the questions raised were concise and informative. The portrait that she completed

in approximately one hour and 45 minutes was excellent. Of course, she considered this only a

study. Comments received about the workshop were all very positive although no evaluation

forms were filled out.

As the juror, she stated that “this was the hardest thing I have ever done.” It would have been

easier to pick just a 1st, 2

nd and 3

rd place. The artwork was hanging for approximately one month.

Joyce came in a d spent approximately four hours, and then came back once more for a final look

before making her decision. She has a written critique with a picture of the piece for each state

award winner and for each honorable mention winner. She also gave an excellent critique of all

the winners and answered any questions that were asked. Comments about the judge were

excellent, and there were many requests to have Joyce as a guest at a WCAL meeting.

Wautoma

Our workshop artist and juror was David DeBoldt, an artist and gallery owner from Waupaca .

He has been an Art Teacher, Art Gallery Manager, Graphic Artist and Free Lance Artist

throughout his career. He currently owns and operates Originals, etc. Art Gallery in Waupaca.

The workshop was titled “Preplanning your next work”. Mr. DeBoldt provided the group of 20

artists with handouts and in-depth explanations of the Elements and Principles of Design. He

brought his own artwork to describe these principles and elements and showed numerous

pictures of famous artists throughout the centuries. He explained how each artist incorporated at

least two of these principles/elements in their works. His discussion was followed by a question

and answer period. I think we all learned a lot from this discussion. Mr. DeBoldt related these

same ideas throughout his critiques of the winning entries and also provided critiques for any

artists upon request.

Our group provides a lunch brought by members of the club to encourage camaraderie with the

artists both within the Rural Rembrandt Art Club and visiting artists. We believe that this

outreach helps us to grow our club membership and creates a sense of goodwill among the

participants.

Richland Center – May 9, 2009

Professor Ron Penkloff – Artist and Juror

(no contact info was given)

Professor Ron Penkoff served admirably as Guest Artist and Juror. This is the second

consecutive year he has performed these roles. He does an excellent job. The artists resonate to

his style. One of the artists referred to it as “laid back.” Indeed, he is very open to comments and

questions from artists. He engages the artists in hands-on exercises and responds with

encouragement and supportive comments. This year his workshop topic was “Color and form”

He began with a slide show of classic European artists and Japanese print makers, point out their

uses of color and form. Then he had all the artists contribute to a line to a large sketch pad on an

easel. After several lines had been added, he began to talk about filing in the spaces created by

the intersecting lines to create forms to which color could be added. It was very engaging and

creative. As one experienced artist said, “I learned so much!”

As Juror, his comments were encouraging. Instead of pointing out the “bad things” about a piece,

he commented on how the artist might improve it. After the general discussion of the art pieces,

he held individual sessions with several of the artists. I think he was genuinely appreciated by the

artists. After benefiting from Prof. Penkoff’s expertise and gentle style for two years running, we

will need to secure a different person or persons for WRAP 2010. This will be a difficult

challenge.

Wautoma – June 6, 2009

Julia Flanagan (artist & juror)

55 Springbrook Road

Omro, WI 54963

(920) 410-4241

Artist comments: Julia introduced herself along with her qualifications and explained her

subject in an informative and light-hearted manner. This was a “hands-on” workshop with

materials and tools supplied by the demonstrating artist. It was educational and fun. Participants

first did a rough sketch of their own creative design. This was followed by “carving” with a

pencil into styrafoam. Then each person shared the use of brayers and water soluble ink to ink

their patterns and create their own prints. We have four guests who also participated.

Juror comments: Julia reviewed the exhibit several times prior to starting her demonstration.

After lunch she announced the Honorable Mention winners who proceeded to bring their pieces

into the demonstration area. She gave reasons for her selection and followed up with a critique of

the best qualities of the piece and what the artist could do to improve it. Next she announced the

State Award winners and went through the same process. After all pieces were returned to the

exhibition area, she graciously critiqued each piece at the request of the individual artist.

Coordinator comments: We are limited to a one-day workshop and exhibit as we do not have a

facility available to exhibit for an entire month. To compensate for this shortfall, our club

members provide coffee and doughnuts to the artists during the registration and hanging of the

exhibit and also provide a lunch free of change to all artists and guests at the workshop. All this

is provided by the coordinator’s committee and other members of the club. We find that the time

spent together is a great way to meet other artists and share information.

viewing a total spectrum. There were about 50 in attendance for the talk and all were quite taken

with amazement and a desire to learn how to “Draw with Scissors.” Also she gave a hands-on

demonstration.

Professor Mertens and Jane Johnson are husband and wife so I had them as both judges. Jane

was our speaker. Excellent! Both did a complete package. Both had the artists who displayed

and had their best interests in mind. The critiques were meaningful to all.

comments regarding how much each had learned. There was a request to hear more about Sally’s

work.

Cindy Schave (juror)

“Her presentation was very informative, sprinkled with a good dose of humor.”

Topic: Pastel Demonstration

She did an excellent job. We first had a slide show of her work, with comments about how she

arrived at the painting, including photographs of what Colette started with. She then did a pastel

demonstration, over a surface that was prep-primed in watercolor. Colette was an excellent

choice. Her answers to all the questions raised were concise and informative. Comments received

about the workshop were all very positive. It was one of the best workshops that I have been

privileged to attend.

Lorin Willey (juror)

PO Box 192

Rosendale, WI 54974

In talking with Lorin after the judging was completed, his comments were “this was the hardest

thing I have ever done. It would have been easier to pick just a first, second and third place.” The

artwork was hanging for approximately one month. Lorin came back and went over the work

three times before he came to his final decision. He gave an excellent critique of all the state

awards and honorable mentions. He also critiqued any other work if the artist asked for it.

Comments about the judge were excellent, and there were many requests to have Lorin as a guest

at the WCAL meetings.

form, presentation and subject matter. We had good audience involvement and interest.

Topic: “Rules for the Visual Dance. Amy’s talk/slide show was well attended. The artists

gleaned many valued comments on her watercolors on water. She paints, exclusively, water. Also

she presented artwork that meant something to her and re-emphasized a point in a total picture

waterline. There was a good answer and question period. The artists also liked her way of all

inclusive critiquing.

Mineral Point – June 21, 2008

Bobbette Rose (artist & juror)

7018 Hubbard Ave.

Middleton, WI 53562

608/831-1244

Topic: Encaustic Painting demo. Wonderful! Fascinating medium clearly explained. Lots of

samples. Bobbette was very knowledgeable and well prepared.

Excellent! The show was small so Bobbette discussed all the work, not just the award winners.

And she discussed each artist’s work as a whole, that is she discussed both of their entries in

relation to each other. Her comments were insightful, professional and extremely educational.

LaCrosse – July 19, 2008

Kari Hogden (artist/juror)

N4290 County Road N

Taylor, WI 54659

Wonderful juror – artist’s approval rate was high.

Lake Mills – July 19, 2008

Carolyn Liedtke (artist)

Key Artworks

PO Box 281

Lake Mills, WI 53551

Monica Urbanik (juror)

Carolyn presented a slide show on Plein-air Painting.

Monica was an outstanding judge of the exhibition. She viewed the artwork during the week and

took a great deal of time looking over the work and making her selections. On the day of the

workshop, she spent a couple of hours evaluating the work for the benefit of the exhibitors, not

only the award winners, but all of the WRAP participants. Her critiques were right on the money;

she is a warm caring person and brought encouragement and advice to all.

Beloit – August 23, 2008

Robert Mertens

UW-Whitewater

The workshop went extremely well. Quite a few of the artists requested that I ask him to return

again next year. We had 23 or so in attendance and they stayed focused throughout the entire

slide presentation on how to use symbols to make a point in your picture. The critique also went

very well and most everyone thought he chose well for the awards. He “taught” as he went along

and each one got the same time. Everyone stayed to the end and remained focused.

Mazomanie – September 13, 2008

John Ribble (artist)

702 Baltzell St.

Madison, WI 53711

608/238-1509

John was a very engaging speaker/demonstrator. Many good general art helps and lots of specific

helps on the subject of pastel painting. He began a painting using the window and landscape

beyond as his subject.

As a juror, John gave each piece plenty of attention. His comments were very encouraging. His

suggestions for improvements were gentle and very helpful.

Rothschild – June 28, 2008

Ann Singsass (artist/juror)

No address listed

715/342-5779

Topic: Painting on metal. It was a great demonstration and Ann will probably be teaching

several classes so many people were interested. She did a great job as juror. There was a wide

range of artwork styles and skill levels that made it hard to compare apples to oranges.

Richland Center – October 18, 2008

Ron Penkoff, Emeritus Professor (artist and juror)

420 E. Court Street

Richland Center, WI 53581

608/647-6115

Topic: Some Cardinal categories of composition. Professor Penkoff did a truly outstanding job

of his presentation. At least half the workshop participants (17) spoke to me with high praise of

his presentation. His explanation of his choice of winners (afternoon) was a bit lacking in detail.

Some of the artists would have appreciated a bit more guidance in how to improve their work.

Platteville – November 22, 2008

JoAnne Hauser Warren (artist and juror)

408 North Washington St.

Cuba City, WI 53807

Topic: Using color effectively. JoAnne led an informative workshop that covered the basics of

using color effectively and included a watercolor demonstration. Participants created their own

color wheels with overlays to assist them in developing their own harmonious color schemes.

Participants commented that they wished creating the color wheel had come first, so they could

have referred to it during the discussion on color.

JoAnne led an instructive critique/discussion of the artwork. She explained her “grading”

technique used to chose award winners, based on the criteria set by WRAP. Participants were

actively engaged in discussing the artwork, and seemed to understand JoAnne’s feed back. She

also supplied a self-evaluation list to help artist critique their own artwork, which many found

helpful.

Jennifer Edge (artist & juror)

Primitive Soul Art Studio

1512 11th

street

Monroe, WI53566

Jennifer Edge holds a BS in art therapy from Edgewood College in Madison and a MS in art

therapy from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. Her lecture and slide presentation for the

WRAP workshop day was upbeat, motivational – one of the best we have ever had. Her approach

to art and why and how she creates art, was very different from how most of the artists at the

workshop view art. Yet this lecture worked for everyone in attendance; no matter what level or

art media. She stressed how art has the power to transform us, to teach us and help us to grow.

Her slide presentation followed her early work while in college up to the present, as well as the

art of some of her therapy students. She helped the group to understand that you should create the

kind of art you like to do – not what you think other people want to see. That art is really the

expression of one’s soul.

Topic: Camera Painting. The artists were treated to an excellent talk on Camera Drawing,

Monroe – July 1, 2006

Deborah Meyer (artist & juror)

\N1209 County Highway M

Browntown, WI

608/9696-3256

Topic: Creativity – Things I have learned.

Deb Meyer is very warm and welcoming – workshop participants felt very comfortable with her.

All were interacting with the first few minutes. In the first half of the morning, Deb provided a

Power Point presentation of her artwork – past and present. She deliberately included pieces she

felt were not her best work to show how all artists grow and evolve. She had artists introduce

themselves, what medium they work in, and to share “what inspires them as an artist.” She

continued with the theme of inspiration and creativity. She put together a handout titled

“Creativity – Things I have Learned” and talked about the points included on this sheet. She

talked about a creative matrix. She handed out another sheet with that info and divided the

participants into two groups. One group went upstairs into the concert hall – the other group

stayed downstairs in the gallery area. Each was to use the info discussed previously to finish this

exercise.

As Deb is from this area, she came in twice prior to the workshop to look at the artwork before

she made her final decision as to State and Honorable Award Winners. She also gave a ersonal

hand-written critique for each participating artist, which we put into envelopes and attached to

the back of their artwork. At the end of the workshop she included a packet each for three artists

who did not attend the workshop. All three artists entered work done in pencil. The packet

included various types of drawing paper and a selection of art pencils. She wanted to show these

artists some of the other tool options available for drawing with pencil, as well as inspire and

motivate them to continue drawing and creating. Deb was an excellent judge and juror for a

WRAP workshop.

Wausau – April 1, 2006

Diana Weber-Osypowski (artist & juror)

1102 Elm St.

Wausau, WI 54401

Diana is a great speaker because she was formally a high school art teacher. She gave a great talk

about how her work moved through pen and ink to watercolor. She is now a full time artist and

A very intuitive artist who gives herself up to the creative process. Very organized and thorough.

Marsha is a retired teacher and her gifts come through in her presentation. Her start on the

project was well done and well presented and even though she showed finished works, it would

have been great to see her finish a piece. (Would be great in a multi-day mixed media workshop.

She was very kind, considerate, thorough and honest.

Helen Klebesadel (artist & juror)

2017 Jenifer Street

Madison, WI 53704

The people who attended this workshop were treated to a very sincere artist that was an

inspiration to all who heard her critiques and slide presentation of her work.

Helen had a genuine concern about each artist and complimented them on their creative journeys.

She was easy to listen to and easy to converse with. She was tireless in explaining why this color

or that shape should or shouldn’t be used in a picture. There was a genuine concern that an artist

think through what he/she wanted to express and then, do it. Art to her is a process that should

continually grow and be worked on. She was liked by all.

showing a “hands-on” building of clay with the coil construction method. Viewers were able to

ask questions throughout the demo about firing, glazing and types of materials and tools needed.

As a juror she had a difficult time judging with all the very qualified expert artwork submitted.

She kept her critiques to the State and Honorable mention works regarding composition, color

enhancement and unique design, making favorable comments rather than negative criticism. She

further critiqued any one desiring that had not won an award.

Melanie Herzog (artist & juror)

Edgewood College

1000 Edgewood Drive

Madison, WI 53711-1997

“Identifying Images and Artists’ Heritage in Contemporary Art”

The artist and juror Melanie Herzog of Madison, choice of subject matter for her presentation fit

our audience at our WRAP day perfectly. Starting with a slide of artist Grant Wood’s “American

Gothic” began immediate dialog between the audience and herself, i.e. what was the artist

saying/what medium did the artist use/how these slide images could possibly effect their own

artwork, etc. and then kept the audience thinking along these lines throughout the day. The

audience established a good rapport and connection with Melanie and immediately were able to

recognize her extensive and versatile background in art, which left them motivated for their

current and future projects at the conclusion of the day. The artists in attendance were given the

opportunity (through slides) to view other artists work whose background in art, as well as

ethnically, may have been different from theirs. Her critique session was thorough, giving each

artist present, satisfactory answers to the questions directed at her.

relaxed enough to ask questions and make comments – very worthwhile. “I’m so glad I came”

was heard many times.

Don did a marvelous job! This was a very good and varied show and very difficult to judge and

he did a great job. His comments to all exhibitors were kind, direct and helpful.

Dr. Lee Clark (artist & juror)

646 Bowen Street

Oshkosh, WI 54901

(He is art professor emeritus at UW-Oshkosh)

Topic: Aids to Realism: Perspective and Proportion

Excellent! In layman’s terms, Dr. Clark presented an easy to understand presentation on the

fundamentals of perspective and proportion. Participants were able to draw along with Dr. Clark.

He presented a step-by-step drawing of a human face to demonstrate proportion.

As a juror, Dr. Clark was also excellent! He encouraged audience participation and allowed each

artist to present background on their work. Dr. Clark also encouraged the artists not to be afraid

to try new techniques in their art.

Woodruff – October 27, 2001

Steve Hilt (artist & juror)

9505 Tomahawk Lake Road

Minocqua, WI 53548

Topic: Pastels on suede paper.

He presented a different technique on suede paper that was very interesting. He had a good sense

of humor and presented well. Steve did a good job of choosing from all medias. He explained

that he was only one person and a lot of personal choice comes into play when judging.

Platteville – November 10, 2001

Steve Vance (artist and juror)

245 Broadway

Plattevile, WI 53818

Topic: The Basics of Design, Composition and Color. It was a slide lecture. The presentation

artists.

2000

Madison – April 8, 2000

Derrick Buisch (artist & juror)

5511 Lake Mendota Dr.

Madison, WI 53705

Topic: Abstract Art. He showed slides of his own work and also of well-known abstract artists-

very good presentation. We heard good comments from those present.

He took a great deal of time making his selections. He made several visits to the exhibit to

evaluate his choices. We appreciated this. Some shows are viewed one time by the juror and

selections made in about 20-30 minutes (not enough time!)

Elkhorn – April 15, 2000

Danny McGuire (artists & juror)

3991 Old Steve Rd.

Oregon, WI 53575

Topic: UW Whitewater Student Work & His Own Sculpture. He showed slides of both. He

talked about processes, where ideas come from in his work and student work. For critique, he

did something special. Each participant had to choose their five favorite pieces in show and

write a one or two word comment about why they chose it. Then the top five works with the

most responses where viewed and he talked about what words were the most common for each

picture. This was to help us understand why people look at your work and what they see. He

talked about how we can improve our work by knowing this. It will teach us to know how to

capture the viewer and how to keep them looking.

Subject of framing came up and he discussed how a frame can take a really excellent picture and

draw the viewer out of picture. Participants were very receptive and learned a lot. Many were

concerned about him being a 3-D person and not a 2-D person. But he showed us how whether

it’s 2-D or 3-D, all the same principals apply of composition and design. He spoke a lot about

how to communicate what we are saying-whether it’s a mood, emotion, or an actual conceptual

story and idea.

Fennimore – April 15, 2000

Audrey Christie (artist & juror)

3570 Rowe Rd.

Dodgeville, WI 53533

Topic: Chinese Brush Painting

Marcia Thompson (artist)

W5380 Innsbruck Rd.

Topic: Bookmaking

Both artists presented “hands on” programs to a crowd in limited time and space. Comments

were best workshop ever. Artists and guests really liked the hands-on techniques demonstrated.

Phil Murray (juror)

720 S 23 Rd.

Great judge of art of all media and style. Critique after workshop was highly informative and

very well received. Excellent in all respects.

Wautoma – May 20, 2000

Diane Franke (Artist)

W4910 Co. Rd. E

Berline, WI 54923

Topic: Wet-on-Wet oil painting. Comments (from three different members): Demonstration was

adequate and artist “knew her stuff” but was not too attention grabbing.

The demonstration was excellent. It was encouraging and very cordial. She even had materials to

work along which I wish I had taken advantage of.

Demonstration was not the best in my opinion.

Susan Hunting(Juror)

479 Oak Apt. 6

Berlin, WI 54923

Comments: Judge chose a range of “normal”paintings that is nothing weird. Only thing she

didn’t comment too much on was why she chose them mostly- “I liked it” or “I really liked it.”

However, the moderator asked her to comment on every painting which I considered very

valuable considering her (the judge’s) credentials.

This was the judge’s first experience but she was eager and excited about the show. It was well-

accepted.

Judge could have been more helpful.

The judge will be better when she has more experience.

The show encompassed a wide range of artwork talent. Many quality entry works.

Waukesha – May 20, 2000

Valerie Christell (Artist & Juror)

3115 S. Superior St.

Milwaukee, WI 53207

Topic: Watercolor Crayon Demonstration

Comments: Very knowledgeable artist, has worked in many different mediums. Demonstrated

different effects of watercolor crayon over three different drawing mediums in an abstract style.

Think majority of participants found it interesting and may be tempted to try it out. Especially

for its easy portability or maybe for the fact that it is very non-toxic.

Valerie did a very thoughtful critique and expressed prior to the show that she did not want to

hurt anyone’s feelings. She had a difficult decision with 95 pieces of artwork in eight different

mediums. She had to do last minute changes on the day of the show as someone pointed out two

artists that had dated artwork which disqualified their work. (Misunderstanding of rules.)

Someone had personally explained rules/never got printout.

Eagle River – June 10, 2000

Eleanor Lapp (Artist)

2355 South Shore Road

Land O’ Lakes, WI 54540

Topic : Fiber art-“painting” with wool and other fibers.

Eleanor is an extremely satisfying and inspiring presenter. Using her experience as a teacher and

writer, she assembles an excellent visual presentation, well organized, and easy to follow. Her

art is exceptional, I think, using wool yarn and rug hooking materials as her medium. Her

original designs and increasingly complex artistic structure give workshop participants a new

view of art. She is also a delight to work with.

Louise Englebrecht (Juror)

1730 Cty Rd. A

Phelps, WI 54554

Louise is an excellent juror. With precision and organization, she presented to workshop

participants her criteria for award presentations. She also gave each artist positive direction as

she critiqued their paintings and other artwork. Her experience in a wide variety of artistic media

makes her an ideal juror for this type of show.

Monroe – June 5, 2000

Katherine Rosing (Artists & Juror)

5810 South Hill Drive

Madison, WI 53705

Katherine was very knowledgeable and experienced in acrylic, oil, and watercolor media, which

made her a good juror in this format. She also has painted (during her career) very realistically,

and currently, contemporary. Related well to exhibiting artists.

Fond du Lac – October 28, 2000

Debie Hellwig (artist)

501 Grove Street

Fond du Lac, WI 54935

Topic: “Painting Portraits in Watercolor”. Using her daughter as a model, Debie demonstrated

step-by-step how to paint a portrait using watercolors. She discussed use of color, brush stroke

and types of paper. After the demo she presented a critique of the painting and encouraged class

participation. Debie’s down-to-earth style immediately put the audience at ease. By the end of

the session everyone was crowded around the artist sharing their ideas and painting techniques.

Excellent presenter!!

Keith May (juror)

240 E. 11th

Fond du Lac, WI 54935

Keith’s expertise as a painter and experience as a judge shined through at the critique. His

excellent sense of humor relaxed the audience. He encouraged audience participation and

provided great encouragement to the artists. Excellent job!

firing of clay. Different examples were displayed. Her lecture was sprinkled with humor which

all enjoyed.

Difficult job well done. So many good pieces. She picked from all medias. When critiquing she

asked the artist what they liked and what they would change. This led to a group discussion.

Everyone enjoyed the demonstration on this unusual method of working with wax and paint.

Slides were also shown giving examples of this technique.

folk artists throughout the United States. Michael answered many questions afterwards on a

variety of subjects. He was very well received by the group. His critique was very thorough and

informative. The artists were very appreciative of it and all said they enjoyed his presentation and

positive responses from the participants.

Monroe - May 1, 1999

Jane Fasse (artist & juror)

4310 Drexel Avenue

Madison, WI 53716

Topic: Slide presentation of her artwork/grad school through present. Demonstration: How to oil

glaze. This was a lively presentation and demonstration. The audience was very appreciative of

the demonstration, as many of the participants are not able to take classes in art, in order to keep

up on techniques and the motivation that is needed in this field.

Ms. Fasse was very generous in her critiquing, in the fact that there were 88 pieces of artwork

and this took a great deal of time to evaluate each one of them. This is what the participants

wanted to do and she was more than happy to oblige since this is their workshop. Everyone was

pleased with the day as a whole.

LaCrosse - May 22, 1999

Rhinelander, WI 54501

Katie gave a very comprehensive slide show on using the computer to make artwork. She showed

some of her work, which is slightly abstract but beautiful. The show was interesting to all the

artists and may have inspired some of them to try to use the computer themselves.

Louise Englebrecht (juror)

1730 County Highway A

Phelps, WI 54554

Louise gave a critique of the artists' work that was funny, instructive and positive. If she was

unfamiliar with a medium, she would admit it, rather than just ignore the piece. A very good

judge and a nice person.

Wautoma - August 14, 1999

Slide presentation of a show of handmade "brooms." and discussion group: "Creativity As A

Healing Tool". Our lighting was not good for the slides but Rae's history and storytelling about

the presentation made up for that. The discussion group could have gone on much longer.

Everyone really participated in that.

Rae is very personal and caring. Even included comments on the frames and how they interact

with the artwork as a whole unit.

Fennimore - April 25, 1998

dialogue and interaction with audience on a variety of subjects. Thorough critique session.

Elkhorn - May 2, 1998

Charlie Olson (artist & juror)

404 Grant Street

Ft. Atkinson, WI 53538

As an artist, Charlie works in an abstract world, even though some of his ceramic forms are

things like teapots. In order for painters to relate to his 3-D work, he stated he paints on the clay.

His work reveals his love of the medium and the colors and textures he can achieve with glaze.

His work also shows us he is not interested in necessarily telling a story but in keeping things

abstract enough so the viewer can create his own story.

As a critique, he took a little different approach in that he looked at what was best in the work.

While critiquing, we didn't hear about ways to improve the work. But he focussed on what was

strong about it. Many times he would point out his fascination with the abstract qualities of

areas, even within a realistic piece. He was strong in pointing out how composition was

important. He also would ask the artist which piece they liked the best and why, which was good

to get the artist talking about their work. Overall, he was inspiring and very well received.

Wautoma - May 30, 1998

Faye Petri (artist)

Eagle River, WI 54521

Topic: Papermaking. The demonstration was a big success. Debbie started hr demo with a

slide presentation, showing us all of the varied applications of papermaking. I believe this was

a new art form to most of our audience as their reaction was one of amazement. She then went

were readily available. After showing us the basic technique she showed us some other fun and

extremely varied ideas. She also passed out a bibliography and suppliers list along with an

outline on procedure.

I now that everyone left the demo wanting to get their hands wet (so to speak) and many of the

participants signed up for her classes or spoke to her about doing workshops for their art

leagues. I would certainly recommend her for future workshops and demonstrations.

Jack Kroehnke (juror)

what he had to say, which was basically he chose the pieces he did because he liked them. He

did not break them down into color and composition and the like, but just his emotional

response to the pieces. We also had a group discussion on the merits of all the pieces in the

show and encouraged all of the artists to keep up the good work. I personally was pleased with

the honesty of him and thought the day went very well.

Ms. Westfall is involved in a very different type of art, especially for those in this community.

She was able to help the group understand that art comes in all forms and helped the audience to

grasp this point. Ecological or environmental art is a fast rising art form and our audience was

able to see the need for this type of art to be addressed.

The audience was pleased with the fact that Ms. Westfall took the time to critique those pieces

of art, whose artists were here. This is the largest show for the MAAC. The pieces this year

were unusually large. We used every available inch of wall space in order to accommodate this

show, as well as folding screens.

She had lots of really good information that was applicable across all media. She also used

plenty of visuals for her presentation. Very tactful and thorough in her comments. She really

took the time to briefly study a piece before beginning to critique it.

Wausau (October 17, 1992)

"Textures Born of Nature". Excellent presentation. Beginning with brief background sketch

explaining her arrival at present point, she gave running description of slides, inspiration,

techniques in watercolor, etc. She showed some of her framed works and answered many

questions.

The artist critiqued pieces and answered more questions. Several participants suggested that

she offer a workshop in Wausau. I'm very happy that I asked her to be our artist/juror. A high

level of enthusiasm filled the gallery.

There are no words to state the excellence of Ms. Bywaters judging of the artworks. She has so

much knowledge of so many things and an uncanny ability in spotting works done in classes or

Jean also did a morning workshop on marketing the artist. People asked many questions and

received valuable information from Jean that they can easily apply to themselves. Her critique

was great! Lots of positive comments and constructive criticisms. I got many compliments at

the end of the day. I think people enjoyed themselves.

Diane Canfield Bywaters (artist/juror)

Asst Prof of Art

UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Pt. WI 54481

Her slide presentation of her recent works was excellent. Each piece of her work was talked

about with a great deal of humor. At the critique, Diane gave each of the artists work a very

helpful criticism on what was done. Also she gave private critiques to those who wanted to

know more. She has an excellent way about her. I would recommend her highly.

Diane seemed to relate to the beginner as well as to the more advanced artist. Some of the

winners are late bloomers with their artwork and I was very excited when their work was

selected, either for a state or honorable mention. Diane had been a judge in an art exhibit in

Wausau a few years ago and I had liked the way she went through the gallery speaking with all

of the artists in the group. She has a very impressive resume of her work throughout the past

ten years has a MFA among other titles.

Chippewa Falls (October 19, 1991)

Brent Talledge (artist and juror)

Chippewa Frame & Art Gallery

Slide Presentation: "Abstraction Isn't As Bad As You Think"

She did an excellent job, beginning with historical background, leading up to modern. She

pointed out abstract qualities in all paintings including background information on why artists

did what they did -- which made it clearer to us what a very abstract piece stood for and to see

abstractions in all paintings.

I received several good comments on her judging which was also well done for the most part

(weak point - photography) she judged three entries together that the artist entered and that was

well accepted. We also did State Exhibit winners first, then Honorable Mention winners

followed by individuals that wished to be critiqued.

Appleton (October 5, 1991)

and his knowledge of art and the art market is quite broad.

Georgina Rogers and Max Schultz (jurors)

Although the number of artists participating was down from two years ago, the quality of the

exhibit had greatly improved. In the future I hope we can bring in an even larger number of

artists and art appreciators.

Fennimore (April 20, 1991)

Richard Sloan (artist & juror)

using acrylics - values, composition. Richard's work has been in as Art Mag, Wildlife, etc. He

does animals of the rain forest. Presently doing a book of Birds of Prey of Arizona. He has

designed numerous stamps, etc.

He was very kind but also objective. His comments were very constructive and not egotistical

in "this is what I might do to lighten this space but you could brighten it here and possibly

achieve the same results." Remember, this is only my opinion and someone else may see it

differently.

Fond du Lac (Sept. 29, 1990)

William Perry Griffiths (artist & juror)

67 N. Lincoln Ave.

Fond du Lac, WI 54935

"Contemporary Art: The Reality of Abstract" Slide/Lecture. Mr. Griffiths presented a well-

organized and interesting slide lecture on the topic of contemporary art. I would highly

recommend Mr. Griffiths to conduct future programs. Mr. Griffiths has an exuberant lecture

style which captivated the audience.

Mr. Griffiths, Associate Professor of Art, University of Wisconsin, Fond du Lac Center, did an

excellent job of judging the exhibit. His critique of the works in the show was outstanding. He

also spent a good deal of time after the workshop evaluating the workshop evaluating the works

of those who did not receive any awards.

Green Bay (Oct. 20, 1990)

Isabel Beaudoin (artist & juror)

1219 S. Webster Avenue

Green Bay, WI 54301

"Technique of Colligraph". Excellent. Isabel has been an artist all of her life. Her worldwide

travels which often are reflected in her work, made her commentary fascinating as she

highlighted demonstration with personal anecdotes. This combination proved spellbinding for

the audience. As art instructor in the Green Bay school system, she has devoted much of her

lifetime to encouraging and helping young talents toward artistic creativity and a more profound

understanding of art.

Excellent. Eminently qualified as Isabel's art experience has run the spectrum of mediums

including woodworking, printmaking, metal, fabric, pastel, oil and watercolor to mention a few.

She selected and critiqued 14 pieces for the State Exhibit awards and 13 for the Honorable

Mention awards; then responded incisively to questions from all participants.

Elton L. Scheunemann (juror)

405 E. Park St.

Comments: Again, I must write most enthusiastically excellent!!! His selection for awards

could not have been more objective or more fair. Although he works as a commercial artist for

Fort Howard Paper Company here as his means of livelihood, he also teaches at the technical

school in Green Bay on occasion. I felt that the teaching experience was certainly reflected in

his very gentle but incisive critiques.

(Drawing With Charcoal) - Both did an excellent job. They were local and able to view the

exhibit several times. Also they met on Friday night to pick winners which made Saturday run

very smoothly. Much better than last year. They really gave it "their all". Bob gave a good

demo -- good speaker and a touch of humor. They did the critique together expressing their

viewpoints fairly. Most everyone was happy with them. There does still seem to be a problem

with "classroom work" - even if it is not a copy of the teacher's but seems to "pick up" the

teacher's style. I don't know if we would discourage a lot of beginners by not allowing any class

work at all. What do you think? Everyone was quite impressed with how well prepared they

were. They judged all artists' paintings together, that is, if three were entered, the three were

critiqued together with reasons why a State Award or Honorable Mention Award was given to

the particular piece.
