1.4 Topics and Leading Issues
Notes:
Under the Leading Issues menu on the upper left, SIRS Issues Researcher’s Leading Issue topical sets are shown, such as Business & Economics, Crime & Punishment, Ethics, and others. You may also choose to view All Leading Issues together. The lower section of the main screen titled “Need help choosing a topic?” provides a clickable visual representation of these same Leading Issue topical content sets. Each set of content is designed to make discovery and browsing quick and efficient.

1.5 Leading Issues
Notes:
Selecting a Leading Issues topic of interest, you will see a full list of related Leading Issues. You may choose between sorting alphabetically, or looking first at the latest additions, or those which are most popular by usage. You may also narrow your list to more specific issue categories, such as Alternative Energy Sources or Energy Policy, and then navigate back using the available breadcrumb links. Clicking any image will return the Leading Issue page.

The issue for Distracted Driving will provide you with an overview, and a Viewpoints section including an essential question with two alternative Viewpoints and selected content supporting each position. Critical Questions are provided, including an illustrative political cartoon.

1.7 Leading Issues Additional Tools
Notes:
The Timeline shows the progression and change of an issue over time. A link is provided for you to run a subject search for additional content, as well as other Related Research Topics. As a learning tool to enhance critical analysis and review, PDF or Word versions of a Research Guide for the Critical Thinker are provided.
1.8 Leading Issues Research Guide
Notes:
This guide will help you identify topics of interest and then organize your information and research to help in writing to persuade, writing to inform, writing a speech, or preparing for a debate. The guide may be used outside of SIRS Issues Researcher for many types of research and analysis in the curriculum.

Search includes the Basic Search on the main page, as well as an Advanced Search. In Advanced Search, you may limit to a specified Source Type, Publication Date, and reading level, or Lexile Score. You may also isolate your search to Primary Sources.
1.10 Search Results
Notes:
Common search features found in the ProQuest platform may be used in any search, such as SU for Subject, TI for Title, or an asterisk for truncation. You may additionally search using Boolean operators OR, AND, or NOT. Results may be limited by Publication Date, narrowed by Source Type, and Sorted By Most Recent or Relevance. Limiting to Primary Sources only is also available after the search has been run.

Results will provide a Text-to-Speech option, View related documents, Lexile Score for reading level, and a Use this document section which includes Cite, Print, and Email.
