Dave Bown Projects9Th Semiannual Competition

Dave Bown Projects The initiatives of the privately held U.S. company focus on advancing the field of visual arts by conducting research, buying works of art for the Collection of Dave Bown Projects, and providing unrestricted monetary awards to visual artists. Prizes $10,000 USD (1 artist will receive $5,000 USD and 5 artists will each receive $1,000 USD). In addition to the cash prizes listed above; Dave Bown Projects will be buying works of art from artists as submissions are received. What our past prize recipients are saying "receiving an unrestricted monetary award is extra money, and extra money is art money. i didn't spend it slowly. i spent it immediately. i bought two things that i needed: 5 days in a darkroom and a roll of 40" photographic paper. the large photographs that i've created recently have become some of my most successful work thus far."— Liz Nielsen "Receiving an unrestricted monetary award from Dave Bown Projects was a very pleasant surprise for me. It afforded me the opportunity to be able to buy additional supplies I needed, in particular, larger panels to paint on. Also, the recognition on their web site gained me more web site traffic and I got the opportunity to work with a new gallery as a direct result of the recognition from the award." — Brenda Hope Zappitell

The legendary unselected exhibition, unbelievably now in it's 30th year, has led the field in 'hang the lot' aesthetics since 1984. This year the 'best in exhibition' prize of £100 will be selected by Robin Klassnik, Director, Matt's Gallery. Most importantly, there are no advance application forms. FILM & VIDEO

NOV - DEC 2014

Whether it falls under the heading of art film or independent movie, you are invited to submit your work to the 10th Edition of VIDEOFOCUS, our special Stigmart issue focused on video. There are 4 categories to submit your work to: video art, independent cinema, documentary, fashion film. A special section of our next issue will be dedicated to cinematographers: it is possible to send you reel too. Since its foundation, Stigmart10 has encouraged a conception of art based on a dynamic dialogue between artists and audience which reflects the interactive nature of the creation process itself. Due to the advent of technologies like DSLR and micro budget cinecameras, in the last decade it came a true revolution in the video field. The fusion of different worlds, like video art, experimental cinema, and even fashion video and corageus documentary is attested by the increasing number of video artists cooperating with filmmakers in the last decade, though this synergy is not limited to the improvement of the overall quality in mainstream cinema terms, but shows the great potential of a new generation of artists able to renew the cinematographic language itself from the inside. HOW TO SUBMIT You can use this form to submit your film/video for consideration for the 10th Biennial Video focus Edition. The selection will be proceeded by our team and will cover worldwide productions and various formats and media.

PROPOSAL

NOV - DEC 2014

Nonhuman Subjectivities

Page 19: Art Woo - Nov - Dec 2014 issue 6

PROPOSAL

NOV - DEC 2014

Four to five hundred years ago Copernicus and Galileo 'removed' the Earth (and humanity) from the centre of the universe. In Western Philiosophy this coincides with the 'epistemological turn' away from cosmology. Western civilization through the enlightenment and into the modern age has continued to place the human experience at the center of existence. Postmodernism, for example, has revealed in human subjectivity, almost to the point of denying all else. In response to recent cultural and scientific developments Art Laboratory Berlin is initiating an open call for art works, texts and cooperative works with artists, scholars and scientists on the general theme of non-human subjectivities. Recent philosophical works by i.a. Graham Harman, Quentin Meillasoux, Isabelle Stengers and John Gray have questioned the solely human role of subjectivity that has formed the core of 'humanism' over the past five centuries. We suggest a new multiplicity of viewpoints and an exploration of non-human intelligence, agency and subjectivity, that make up our planet (and beyond). Possible topics could include - Perspectives under threat - non-human viewpoints during the great species die off. - Bacterial viewpoints - how microbes communicate, interact and experience the world. - Non-human perspectives - intelligence and agency in animals, plants, bacteria. - Re-definition of intelligence, agency and sentience in ways that are not anthropomorphic. - What do some of these perspectives make of Homo sapiens? e.g.- 90% of the cells in our body do not have human DNA -we are a mere host, a topography, for billions of bacteria and fungi. - How about agency (and even intelligence) beyond life - virii or crystals for instance.

Page 20: Art Woo - Nov - Dec 2014 issue 6

PROPOSAL

NOV - DEC 2014

- Are complex data systems, algorithms, artificial intelligence beginning to have points of view, and forms of agency that are beyond human comprehension? Art Laboratory Berlin is seeking submissions and proposals predominantly for exhibitions, performances and workshops, but is also interested in cooperation with scholars and scientists for the production of a series of lectures, texts and a symposium The deadline for entries is 15 December, 2014. Chosen proposals will form part of our 2016-17 programme. P l e a s e s u b m i t y o u r p r o p o s a l b y e m a i l t o : nonhumanisms(at)artlaboratory-berlin.org The application should include a proposal (not longer than 5 pages), a CV and work portfolio (not longer than 10 pages). We ask that you keep the size of attachments altogether under 5MB. For video or other large files we encourage the use of links. In rare exceptions proposals may be accepted by post, if a request is first sent by email. Please title the subject line: POST RQST.

Call to installation and site-specific artists. An opportunity to get your work published. The history of site-specific art is complex and is linked to the development of installation art, land art and the evolution of the idea of 'public art.' This Art Book seeks to showcase some of the current artists who are exploring 'location' as the main theme for their art. The State of Art, art books are designed to capture a snapshot of current contemporary art practice. Installation and Site Specific is just one title in a series of six books published biannually. The EAiR program supports artists who are making a transition in their professional lives. Whether moving from academia to a professional studio practice, taking up a new medium, or beginning a new body of work, artists find this independent residency ideal for contemplation, research, and experimentation. The program provides artists with a place and the time to develop an idea or project in glass, with the potential for realizing a new body of work. The residency requires a project proposal and supports kiln working, cold working, printmaking, and use of mixed media but not hot glassworking. The EAiR program is an independent artist’s residency, so no instruction is available and some glassmaking experience is required. Residents have access to many Pilchuck studios, including the glass-plate printmaking (vitreography) studio; plaster studio; fusing, slumping, and casting kilns; flameworking torch; and cold working equipment. No hot glass working is available. The residency requires full-time participation by six artists. Residents should expect to partake in communal studio clean-ups and be available to visitors, among other activities. Included in the residency award is a stipend of US$1,000 per artist, open studio space, shared cooking facilities, and a private room in a cottage with shared bath. BIENNIAL

NOV - DEC 2014

1St Parse Biennial

The first Biennial PARSE conference at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg, Sweden takes as its point of departure the question of time. Time arguably has always been at the center of the research initiatives of the natural sciences, of philosophy and of the many different practices of history and social criticism. However, time also occupies a central place for the curiosity and attention of artist researchers across all the arts. The intensification of the question of time has, in recent years, prompted some to speak of a "temporal turn" across the disciplines. This conference seeks to bring together a range of researchers, drawn mainly from the artistic fields but also inviting researchers from across all disciplines to consider questions with respect to the practices, processes and perturbations of time.

SYMPOSIUM

NOV - DEC 2014

The School Of Sound International Symposium

A Unique Series Of Masterclasses Exploring The Art Of Sound In Film, The Arts And Media

What is the School of Sound? The School of Sound is a biennial symposium created to encourage a cross-disciplinary approach to using sound in the arts and media. We explore what sound does, how audiences listen. It is a place where you can raise your awareness of how audio production works, how it conveys information and emotion, how you can work with it. For four days you'll be immersed in a world of imagination, invention and innovation. Listening to presentations from a diversity of incredible talents, you will be able to disconnect from your day-to-day work, taken out of your comfort zone, to reflect on sound as something that is profoundly complex, entertaining and important.

Page 33: Art Woo - Nov - Dec 2014 issue 6

Why attend the School of Sound? The SOS is not an academic conference and it is not about how to get a job. It is a rare opportunity to hear and meet 20 creatives working at the highest levels of the arts and media speaking in detail about how they think and work. The SOS is not about just one area of sound production. The programme covers film, theatre, dance, opera, games, installation, music and radio - expanding your thinking and increasing your ability to work across diverse genres and forms of production.
