The present book celebrates the people of the desert region of Rajasthan, who succeeded in developing new techniques to preserve water for their agricultural requirements, not withstanding the dearth they had faced year after year. The most commendable contribution towards water management was by the Paliwal Brahmins, called as ‘The men with scientific knowledge about water management in deserts’, they cluefully managed preservation of both surface and groundwater. The science of underground water movement was well understood by the planners of the wells. Since the water bodies were located at the slope of tanks, water percolated in ground and probably created an underground passage known in the local parlance as gupt nadi.

Feudalism was a set of legal and military customs in mediaeval Europe that structured society in a way that the poorest worked the land and had to pay the rich for the right to do so. Broadly defined, it was a way of structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labour. In its origin, the feudal grant of land had been seen in terms of a personal bond between lord and vassal, but with time and the transformation of fiefs into hereditary holdings, the nature of the system came to be seen as a form of "politics of land". The 11th century in France saw what has been called by historians a "feudal revolution" or "mutation" and a "fragmentation of powers" (Bloch) that was unlike the development of feudalism in

England or Italy or Germany in the same period or later. Feudalism itself decayed and effectively disappeared in most of Western Europe by about 1500, partly since the military power of kings shifted from armies consisting of the nobility to professional fighters (effectively reducing the nobility's power), but also because the Black Death reduced the nobility's hold on the lower classes. The system lingered on in parts of Central and Eastern Europe as late as the 1850s. Russia finally abolished serfdom in 1861. However, even when the original feudal relationships had disappeared, there were many institutional remnants of feudalism left in place. The present book is an effort to understant the origin and growth of feudalism, and deals with the political, economic and social aspect of Indian feudalism. Students of sociology and economics will find this book useful in their graduation courses.

From very early history to modern times, walls have often been necessary for cities to survive in an ever-changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley Civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). Fortifications are military constructions or buildings designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and also used to solidify rule in a region during peace time. Humans have constructed defensive works for many thousands of years, in a variety of increasingly complex designs. The arrival of explosive shells in the 19th century led to yet another stage in the evolution of fortification. Steel-and-concrete fortifications were common during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However the advances in modern warfare since World War I have made large-scale fortifications obsolete in most situations. Through their turbulent and blood-stained history, most castles changed hands many times with the shifting political fortunes of the age. Eventually, the growth of artillery and cannon fire reduced the defensive nature of castles but their administrative, and interestingly, romantic aspects continued to be significant. A palace is a grand residence, especially a royal residence, or the home of a head of state or some other high-ranking dignitary. The present book is an overview at the building of forts and castles, and their uses, throughout history and around the world. This book will be an interesting information guide for students and historians.

Mysticism is the practice of religious ecstasies (religious experiences during alternate states of consciousness), together with whatever ideologies, ethics, rites, myths, legends, and magic may be related to them. It may also refer to the attainment of insight in ultimate or hidden truths, and to human transformation supported by various practices and experiences. During the early modern period, the definition of mysticism grew to include a broad range of beliefs and ideologies related to "extraordinary experiences and states of mind". In modern times, "mysticism" has acquired a limited definition, with broad applications, as meaning the aim at the "union with the Absolute, the Infinite, or God". Hinduism is much misunderstood, not only by non-Hindus but also by Hindus themselves. It has been tried to be defined in terms of rules of purity and pollution, caste hierarchy, Brahminism, idolatry, ritualism, cow-worship, other-worldliness and amorality! That is, anything which Hinduism is not. Some have even doubts if it is a religion at all! This book has, therefore, taken upon itself the task of clearing such doubts and misunderstandings. It explains in Part I what really Hinduism is and what it is not. It involves an exposition of the concept of the Divine and Its relation to the world and the Self, and related Saadhanaa – ways of realizing the Divine as per Hinduism. Hinduism insists on being truthful, compassionate and generous, irrespective of whether one is interested in Saadhanaa. Hence there is a separate chapter on the moral philosophy of Hinduism. Among other things, it goes into social engagement and environmental sensitivity of Hinduism. The book then explains why Hinduism is neither Brahminism nor caste system. With due documentation, it shows that Hinduism is actually opposed to the caste system and its hierarchy.
