Maundy Thursday/ Seder Meal March 28—7pm

On the night before Jesus was crucified, he ate a meal with his disciples. We have always called it the “Last Supper.” Was

this the traditional Seder meal that was eaten during Passover? On Maundy Thursday, Hava Pell, a retired Rabbi, will lead a

program where she explains the ritual drama of the Seder Meal. This will be a time of worship, instruction, fellowship

and fun. Please join us as we sample some of the foods that are typically part of this meal.

Good Friday Tenebrae March 29—7pm

We will recreate the final hours of Jesus’ life with readings and special music, with silent reflection and the stripping of the altar. This worship experience closes in darkness and we are left with the reality of the crucifixion before us.

Also on Good Friday we will have a Prayer Vigil from 7am

to 7pm in the chapel. Time slots will be one-half hour in length. To maintain continuous prayer throughout the 12 hour vigil, the goal is to have at least one person present for each of the 24 time slots. A signup sheet is located outside the chapel. We hope you will consider ending Lent with a meaningful prayer experience.

Stations of the Cross 12-3pm The Stations of the Cross are a popular Christian devotion which commemorates the Passion and

death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Walking the Stations of the Cross began centuries ago when pilgrims to the Holy Land would walk the Via

Delarosa from Pilates Judgment Hall to the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem

as a way to remember the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Later, cathedrals in Europe would create stations of the

cross in their sanctuaries so that people could share in this experience without making the trip to

Jerusalem. Each of the fourteen stations stand for an event which occurred during Jesus’ Passion and death at Calvary on Good Friday. A person making

the Stations of the Cross walks to each station and meditates about the event depicted there and prays.

We will have scripture text, meditation, and prayer to use at each station. You can walk the stations by yourself or with a group of friends or family.

A small group will dress in time appropriate clothing. Palms will be distributed to all who follow.

Appropriate songs will be sung. The route will be short so children can participate.

For those who are unable to walk, you can greet us as we return with shouts of joy. Invite your friends and family to participate in this joyous celebration.

Notes From Pastor Bonita In Lillian Daniel’s book ‘When “Spiritual But Not Religious” Is Not Enough’, She asks us to picture this moment:

You enter the school cafeteria and freeze. You clutch your lunch and wonder. Where do I sit? Will I be welcomed? Will I be ignored? …All the chattering, shrieking, and laughing does not include you. You are the outsider. You have nowhere to sit. You could turn around and spend the lunch hour in the bathroom, but then tomorrow you will have to deal with this again. Sit down, sit yourself down. It will be okay. “Is someone sitting here?” you ask at a table with an empty seat or two. A shrug, “Go ahead.” You remember your last school where, when you asked, “Is someone sitting here:” they said, “Sorry, it’s taken.” So you sat somewhere else and then spent the lunch hour looking at that still-empty seat, and the girls around it whispering to one another, saying, “That was mean,” when their laughter indicated what it really was to them: funny. So now, you sit down and wonder: Will they talk to me? Will I ever eat with these people again? “What’s your name?” the girl I have joined at the table asked me. Another says, “Where did you move from?” And at her question, my heart fills with such gratitude that I fight to keep back the tears. They have welcomed me. I have a place to sit. I will not have to eat alone in the middle of a crowded room.

This is a long quote but it made me wonder about people who come to a church for the first time. Do they wonder if they are welcome? Are they frightened they might sit in a wrong pew or not know the right prayers? Last year Council spoke extensively about what ministry our church should specialize in. What, with our gifts and talents, should we claim as our mission? They reflected on our history of welcoming the community into this building for many different functions. They concluded that we were being called to be the church with an EXTRAVAGANT WELCOME. The phrase they thought summed it up was: “No Matter Who You Are Or Where You Are On Life’s Journey, You Are Welcome Here.” Many churches claim to be welcoming, friendly churches but don’t realize how complicated it is to really be welcoming. I love it when someone from a group who is using our building relates their appreciation for how we try to accommodate their needs. I love it when someone comes up to me and says, “Did you meet so and so? They are visitors today.” It is hard to know how to balance a welcome. We want to be friendly but not desperate. We need to be sensitive enough to recognize if people want more attention or want to be left alone. We could improve our Sunday morning welcome by making a point to sit next to the visitor so they could ask questions about the service. Or you could arrive to worship 10 minutes ahead of time so the visitor doesn’t feel like they are all alone in that huge sanctuary. You could introduce them to someone who might share some things in common. You could invite them to coffee after the service. You could include them in a conversation rather than just talk with your friends. You could think about what made you feel welcome the time you visited another church and duplicate it. Easter is coming and visitors will come. Lets make sure they receive an EXTRAVAGANT WELCOME. Pastor Bonita

Grocery Certificates

Do you shop at Giant, Weis or Karns regularly or even once in a while? If you do, you can support CPUCC’s ministry and mission every time you shop, at no cost to yourself. Just stop at the table in the foyer on Sunday mornings or in the office during the week to pick up grocery gift cards for your favorite store, which are available in a variety of denominations to meet your needs, ranging from $5.00 to $100.00. Additionally, they make great gifts for seniors, college students and anyone who buys groceries!

Facilities Updates As mentioned in a few recent Newsletter articles, the

Facilities Stewards are working on some major improvements. Below are some of the projects they are working on and their status: Our riding tractor has seen better days. We

hope to purchase a new one this season. We have collected about $6,057 so far. (Thank you to the Devonshire Fair Committee for allocating money for this project.)

The roof is in need of repainting to correct corroded or peeling paint (cost covered under warranty). But before we can do that, we’ll need to do some repairs to the roof, fix parts of the Bell Tower that are leaking, etc. The projected cost of this project is around $3500! Work is contracted and will be done in the Spring!

The church is in the process of updating our phone & internet service. Changes will save us money while giving us more services.

Donations to help fund these building projects will be gratefully accepted. Please indicate Building Fund on your check (payable to CPUCC) or envelope.

The Kathryn Bolton/Edna Hoke Sunday

School Class is having another Soup Sale. They will be selling Chicken Corn

Soup and Vegetable Soup for $6 per quart. Preordering ensures that you will get the soup you want. Please contact Mary Fraunfelter at 652-1942 to place an order. Pick up for soup is March 3.

It’s not too late to buy at 2013 Bonus Book! Cost is $28 with the church earning $7.50/book. Stop by the grocery table or the church office.

Adult Faith Development

During Lent, our church is reading and reflecting upon the book, The Jesus Diaries: Who Jesus Is to Me. The book contains a collection of nine, original, short essays from the Stillspeaking Writers’ Group, describing their individual perspectives on what Jesus means to them. Various small groups throughout our church family are reading and holding weekly discussions on The Jesus Diaries. Since a focus on Jesus is especially relevant during the six weeks of Lent, we encourage you to join one of these small group discussions to deepen your Lenten experience. The following is a list of the groups and meeting times. It is not too late to participate in one of these groups! Books are available in the office or through the small group at a cost of $7.00.

Sundays at 9:30 AM – Join one of the Sunday School classes in the parlor, the chapel, or the parsonage

Tuesdays at 7:15 PM Wednesdays at 6:00 PM Thursdays at 10:00 AM or 6:45 PM

Questions? Please contact the adult faith development deacons: Sharon Clark (657-8204 or [email protected]) or Helen Ferguson (566-2142 or [email protected]).

Children & Youth Sunday School

Join in the Lenten Sunday School fun! Classes have interesting and fun lessons, and may include games, crafts, and/or music each week. All classes for children from walkers through middle school and youth (9th – 12th grade high school students) meet at 9:30 a.m. There will be special events on Palm Sunday and Easter. On Palm Sunday, all children and youth Sunday School classes will participate in the neighborhood parade. Parents of children in the toddler – kindergarten class, if you will not be participating, please bring a stroller for your child to use for safety purposes. On Easter the children will enjoy a story and activity and an egg hunt (outdoors, if weather permits!) Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, visitors – bring the young people in your life and help them grow in their Christian faith. If you have questions about children and youth faith development, please contact Cindy Gnech at 991-4124.

Lucille Frame Library Book Review

The Final Days of Jesus By Shimon Gibson

This book written by an archaeologist looks at the last month of Jesus’ life from an archaeological and historical view point. The book has many interesting facts, but two stood out to me. First, Joseph & Mary were probably not poor, but by that days standards a carpenter was a very middle class profession. If they had been poor they probably wouldn't be paying taxes, and couldn’t have afforded to travel to Bethlehem. In those days, as today, travel wasn’t cheap—staying at Inns on the way and food. From Nazareth to Bethlehem was probably a trip of several days, then some expense.

Another interesting point was the tomb and the 3 days. Apparently in Jesus day, if possible dead people were laid in a tomb, if possible, and them buried. The reason for this was that with primitive medicine a comatose pa-tient was often thought dead and then buried alive. This was apparently documented in several cases. Thus the thought that if a person was still “dead” after 3 days he was really dead, and then was buried.

This book also discusses many other points of Jesus’ last month. Where is Calvary, where was the real site of cru-cifixion, where was his trial and others. It s a little aca-demic in places, but really readable.

FAMILY PROMISE

It is again time for Family Promise to come to Colonial Park. We will have families stay-ing with us from March 10-17. Once again, we will be in need of volunteers to help with evening meals, staying overnight, and help-ing drive the van to transport the families between the church and the day center. As of right now St Marks Lutheran will no longer be partnering with us. We are in the process of looking for a new church. If we cannot find a church before March 10th we will need to cover 3 more days than we usually do. If you have not volunteered in the past, this would be the perfect time to find out if you would enjoy this mission.

Thanks again to all who have volunteered in the past. We have been blessed to have so many wonderful people who have taken time out of their busy schedules to help these families who are less fortunate get back on their feet.

If you would like to volunteer, please call either Sue Reinke at 545-0440 or Tom Bay at 657-0218.

Easter Flowers We will be decorating the church with flowers for

Easter. If you’d like to sponsor flowers please fill out the form below and return it with you payment, pay-able to CPUCC, to the church office, the offering plate

or mail it to Priscilla Fledderjohn at 55 S. Madison Street, 17109.

Concert Series—Piano Recital by Oni Buchannan It may be hard to believe, but this March will mark the 10th anniversary of the dedication of our wonderful Baldwin grand piano in the sanctuary! This piano was a very special gift to our congregation, and it's something that we all continue to enjoy every week in worship. In recognition and celebration of this anniversary, we will be welcoming internationally renowned concert pianist Oni Buchanan to CPUCC for a special recital on Saturday, March 23rd at 7:30pm. Her program, entitled Looking Glass Music, will offer an enchanting, reflective escape during this season of lent. You can get to know Oni better at her website: http://www.arielartists.com/artists/oni-buchanan/

The concert is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be received, and a reception will follow in the parlor where guests can meet and talk with the artist.

This concert is being sponsored by the Goodman Concert Series and the Keiser Family. If you would be interested in making a donation to help underwrite this concert, please talk to Scott. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the reception following the concert. Please see Michael Shafer or Jane Richardson if you would be willing to provide a snack or help with setup. 7

We Care, We Share, Books for Foose This program has been sponsored by CPUCC for more than 20 years. Recently we lost one of our longest serving volunteers with the death of Ruth Webb. She and her husband Ernie visited two fourth grade classes for many years. In addition to reading to the students, they formed stamp collection clubs as an after school activity for these students.

Ruth took the Patriot Mini-Pages that CPUCC members donated. She collated them and used them in the fourth grade classes. We will not need to collect these mini pages any

longer.

In March we will visit Foose and celebrate the birth of Dr. Seuss. Every class will have some Seuss books to choose from. There are never enough Dr. Seuss books so those of you who have been supplying books from yard sales, be on the lookout for Seuss books. We appreciate all the contributions CPUCC members have made to this program. Any questions about this program, contact Helen Ferguson at 566-2142 or [email protected].
