Art Dubai is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai Art Dubai, the leading international contemporary art fair in the MENASA (Middle East/North Africa/South Asia), is the central meeting point for the region’s vibrant and fast-growing contemporary art community. The sixth edition of Art Dubai takes place March 21-24, 2012, at Madinat Jumeirah, UAE, featuring 75 leading galleries and dynamic young spaces from 32 countries. In addition, Art Dubai features an innovative programme of artists’ and curators’ residencies; commissioned artists’ projects and performances; the unveiling of the 2012 Abraaj Capital Art Prize; and the critically lauded Global Art Forum, now expanded to six days. includes 16 new commissions. As Cai’s first solo exhibition in the Middle East and the first single-artist exhibition

presented by Mathaf, ‘Saraab’ opens new avenues of dialogue for the Arabian Gulf as the region explores its historic

and contemporary links across Asia.

Victoria Camblin has curated a special series of PowerPoints, created collaboratively by

contemporary artists, writers, creative entities and duos, which celebrate, critique and creatively

exploit the medium’s strange, story-telling familiarity. Featuring Douglas Coupland (Keynote),

Ayshay + Kari Altmann, Goldin & Senneby, LuckyPDF and Alexander Provan (Triple Canopy). Also

Having studied sculpture in the early 80s, novelist Douglas Coupland was drawn into writing by the

text-works of artists Andy Warhol and Jenny Holzer. After a decade of writing best-selling books like

Generation X, Microserfs and JPod, Coupland returned to making art—in a multitude of shapes,

sizes, and dizzying colours. Here, with Serpentine Gallery Co-director of Exhibitions and

Programmes and Director of International Programmes Hans Ulrich Obrist and Shumon Basar,

Coupland discusses words, images and what it means to be ‘post-media’ today.

Film Screening

This unique film-portrait of Anselm Kiefer, directed by Sophie Fiennes, visits the personal universe the

artist built at his hill studio estate in the South of France. Fiennes enters into direct contact with the raw

materials Kiefer employs to build his paintings and sculpture—lead, concrete, ash, acid, glass and gold—

during his last days at La Ribotte before his move to Paris.

performative or site-specific work for Art Dubai Projects. Alongside UAE-based artists Hadeyah Badri, Zeinab Al

Hashimi and Nasir Nasrallah, they are also invited to make work for Open Studios exhibitions that run as part of

Sikka Art Fair during Art Week. The curator in residence is Alexandra MacGilp.

Art Week Galleries Night | Al Quoz and DIFC

On Monday March 19, coordinated late-night openings of new exhibitions accompanied by local musicians’

performances take place across Dubai’s 40-plus galleries, located in the industrial quarter of Al Quoz and at Gate

Village in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

largest collection of Classical Arab music as interpreted by a range of musicians and sound artists. Produced by

Sharjah Art Foundation, this performance follows last autumn’s New York premiere of Atoui’s ‘Visiting Tarab’ as a

Commissioned as part of Art Dubai Projects, Istanbul-based artist Köken Ergun’s new work involves nightly

project is produced in collaboration with The Fridge and features UAE-based singer-pianist duo Melisa Le Rue

and Stoyan Stoyanov.

which focuses on bringing the USA and the UAE together through an ongoing artistic dialogue. Works by

contemporary Emirati, American and regional artists are juxtaposed throughout the Consulate. Ebtisam Abdul-Aziz,

Maryam Al Qassimi, and Sheikha Bin Dhaher are three of the contemporary Emirati artists that will be on view in the

collection.

in Al Quoz 1, Dubai. There will also be a tour of Alserkal galleries including Green Art Gallery, Carbon 12, IVDE, Lawrie

A guided tour of The Flying House (TFH), a non-profit organization promoting contemporary Emirati artists, with

founder Abdul-Raheem Sharif, in the presence of the artist Hassan Sharif, regarded as the ‘father of conceptual art’,

making installations and performance work in the UAE since the 1970s. TFH is not an art gallery, nor it is a museum;

it aims to preserve national art and bring it nearer to the people. An intriguing villa based studio and exhibition

space.

Artist Michael Rakowitz presents his 2010 multi-medium project, The Breakup, which considered

the intricacies of The Beatles’ 1969 breakup as an example of a collaborative phenomenon that

stops functioning. Negotiation fails, communication halts. The Breakup originally aired as a ten-

part radio program on Ramallah’s Radio Amwaj, and was commissioned by Al Ma’mal Foundation

for Contemporary Art, Jerusalem. Its director, Jack Persekian, talks to Rakowitz about the many

architectural traditions and sits at the heart of Al Quoz. Shaqayeq Arabi was born in Iran and started painting and

Presentation

Blogger Hind Mezaina presents highlights from Aqeel al Showab’s 10,000-hour VHS/Betamax archive of

Emirati TV from the 1970s to the 1990s. A private individual’s passion becomes de facto national archive.

Artist’s Presentation

‘Avalanche in Kosovo. Syrian conflict in Lebanon. Whitney Houston no more. Fighting escalates in

Athens’. Artist Isak Berbic presents his recent works: Narrating the Broadcast, an online performance in

which Berbic reported on the reporting on Egypt and Libya; the related video The Battle for Petra (on show

in the Forum-Forum) and Brief Histories, a curatorial project in collaboration with Fawz Kabra.

16.00 Dubai Art World Cartography

Presentation and Conversation

Brusselssprouts have produced a dynamic, cartographic visual exploration of the Dubai art world,

distilling more than 2500 entries spanning from galleries, exhibitions, fairs, artists, curators, patrons and

any art event produced in U.A.E. since 2005. They explain to Shumon Basar how the map came about and

what it reveals. Also displayed in the Forum-Forum (located in the Ballroom Foyer).

Also on show in the Forum-Forum (located in the Ballroom Foyer) are artworks by artists Hala Ali and

Banu Cennetoglu as well as multi-media resources related to ‘The Medium of Media’.

A rare opportunity to see Al Ain through the eyes of one of the key residents. Al Ain is often called the ‘Garden City of

the Gulf’; given its many oases. Continuously inhabited for more than four thousand years, the city is the birthplace

of HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates. This day out in the oldest

city in the Emirates includes Al Ain National Museum, archaeological parks, oases, the Al Jahili Fort – built in 1989 by

Sheikh Zayed The First and featuring an exhibition on Wilfred Thesiger – and 1249-metre mountain Jebel Hafeet.

Lunch | Residence of HE Zaki Nusseibeh A member of Art Dubai’s Honorary Board, Zaki Nusseibeh has been active in UAE Government service and

interpreter for the President of the United Arab Emirates since 1968. As Advisor in the Ministry of Presidential

Affairs, he was also the Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage 2006-2012 and sits

on a number of Boards that include the Abu Dhabi Authority for Tourism and Culture, the UAE Archives Centre

and the Paris Sorbonne University of Abu Dhabi. Zaki Nusseibeh was formerly the personal interpreter and

adviser for the late Sheikh Zayed and is a long-time patron of the arts. He started his career as a journalist,

editor and broadcaster, worked as Director of Information for the Abu Dhabi and later the UAE Governments,

before becoming adviser to the Presidential Court, where he is still active in the same capacity.
