Coming up in November...

Intimately Remote: a photographic exhibition For his exhibition in November ,‘Intimately Remote’, Tim has selected images from his recent travels from Antarctica to Iceland, and works that represent the smaller, more intimate elements of the (often) vast landscapes. The images that have been selected are drawn from travels to Antarctica, Patagonia, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Iceland, Norway, Dubai, Nepal, Scotland, New Zealand, and of course Australia. Tim has been travelling the world for over 25 years, constantly adding to an ever growing bucket list of locations. Tim will be at the Gallery throughout the exhibition, and is more than happy to talk about the images and the stories behind them. All the works on display are being sold ‘off the wall’, and can also be ordered at different sizes if required. So if you have an interest in learning about some of the far flung places in the world, be sure to come out and see what Tim has to offer.

Exhibition opening: Sunday 6th November

Some Theatre Trivia: Stage directions House left/right are from the audience's perspective. The stage itself has been given named areas to facilitate blocking. The rear of the stage is considered up-stage. This derives from the raked stage, where the stage sloped up away from the audience. The front of the stage (i.e. nearest the audience) is down-stage.

Stage left and right, at least in British and North American theatre, refer to the actor's left and right facing the audience. Because this is sometimes misunderstood, the terms prompt (actor's or stage left) and bastard/opposite prompt (actor's or stage right) are also used.

House left and house right refer to how the audience perceives the stage. The audience’s left is referred to as house left, and the audience’s right is referred to as house right. (These may also be called camera left and camera right for a filmed or sometimes unfilmed production or play.) Reference: Wikipedia contributors. "Blocking (stage)." Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. THE NATURE OF SURVIVAL

Sunday September 25th saw RRRTAG host the launch of ‘The Nature of Survival’; an inspiring story of personal challenges, grief and loss as well as the strength of love and the healing power of nature. The teller of this wonderful story of a life now finding fulfilment after a long struggle is Doug Lang, a local farmer, environmentalist and now author. Doug has put heart and soul into this book and with the constant love and support of wife Cheryl, children Simon, Ryan, Billy and Christy and the legacy and inspiration of Rebecca, he has shared his experiences with honesty and spirit. Doug spoke about his motivation to write the story he had been putting together for many years. He shared his battle with depression, intrusive thoughts, alcohol addiction and the overwhelming grief of personal loss. He tells how, throughout the years, he continued to function in the community through sport, work and family life. As years went on he became increasingly attuned to the environment and thus began a passion which has carried him through the most debilitating experiences and is now, along with his family, the focus of his life’s work. Growing up on a farm at Balintore as generations of his family before him, Doug developed a keen sense of the natural world around him and has now, after many years of work and the help of Cheryl, family and friends, succeeded in the revegetation of their farm. Doug researched the native plants which grew prior to cultivation for farmland and has succeeded in re-introducing some of them while at the same time, creating a beautiful plantation in memory of their daughter Rebecca. The motivation and courage Doug needed to finally put his life into a book came with the experience of being made redundant from his

job in circumstances which deeply undermined his self-esteem and the pride he took in the recognised quality of his work and long service to the organisation. With Cheryl’s encouragement he began a journey alone into the outback to reflect and focus on his life and the book. However, the diagnosis of Rebecca’s illness meant an immediate return home and the beginning of the most painful and profound journey yet. Doug’s story is real and powerful, an inspiration to those who share it. The beautiful space of RRRTAG was the ideal place for Doug to share his life story and introduce the book. He acknowledged those who had supported and helped him to reach this day, surrounded by family and friends in a welcoming place so close to home. Let’s chat – Luis Bayonas “Do you paint?” “Music?” “What do you do?” So this is how I first meet Luis. He wants to know what my thing is and so asks me the questions. Immediately obvious is that he likes to talk about real things, which to him equals all things Art. Luis has many ‘things’ – he is a film maker, writer, painter, and music maker. I wonder how Luis can do it all and how he moves from one art form to the next.

*****

So where did your interest in the arts begin?

Well, as a kid everyone wanted me to do something practical. And I was a terrible student at school, it just didn’t interest me, the typical curriculum. My grandfather was a famous concert pianist and I always played music but with more freedom than that. My father was a lawyer, who liked to paint as well, so I was always surrounded by artists and I was comfortable drawing.

You are a writer, artist, musician, and film maker. Which art form came first? How do you decide what to focus on at different times?

I always loved movies. The Spanish and French invented film-making. Movies were real life for me, because otherwise real life was war and that was a nightmare. Rather than getting rid of him, the Americans made a friend of Franco and after the war they started making movies cheaply in Spain. I was doing art design dressing sets and then the writing started because they needed someone to translate scripts for the crews. I could do this because I had grown up with English. My mother was a language teacher, and we also spoke French at home.

You’ve worked with some pretty big names in film, haven’t you?

Yeah yeah. Orson Welles and Dustin Hoffman...

Then you wrote for Crawford Productions?

There was an advertisement in a newspaper in Madrid. Hector Crawford was looking for scriptwriters for a show called Homicide. So we came to Australia.

What films have you made here?

Dancing Cows which is local, Adios, and now Loaded Guns and Virtual Dogs, also local. Loaded Guns and Virtual Dogs will premiere at Colac Cinemas on November 17th and run until the 22nd.

So Luis, let’s move from film to painting, can we expect a theme in your October exhibition?

I do not work to themes. No plan. I am inspired by life. Something moves me, it could be a tree, a cat, anything that makes me look twice. I have painted a lot of figures at times. The model is the guts of the human figure so I have worked on many series of nudes.

Tell us more about your painting process.

When I go to a canvas, with a blank head, when I let my hand go, the hand is doing it. Without being precious, let the hand do it, without controlling. Same with music. When painting, I do a first draft, then I get rid of stuff. I throw it all on the table, then clean it up. When writing too. If you don’t screw up at first, you don’t have anything. When I play music I like to be free-flowing.

But how do you choose which art form you will focus on when?

One thing helps the other thing. My father always said that the only way to succeed is to focus on one thing. I destroyed that myth. Liberate yourself from labels.

Vale Mike Ebeling 29-09-2016 One of the original supporters of RRRTAG and the treasurer on the inaugural committee, Mike's contribution in so many ways to its development can not be over-estimated. In the initial setup, Mike was always there to lend a hand - and he continued to be involved in all aspects - the gallery, theatre and film society. Mike welcomed everybody, readily shared his skills and encouraged others to be involved in creating the space that has become RRRTAG. Mike was a much loved member of the Colac community - as a teacher, mentor and through his involvement with basketball. Not forgetting the passions he shared with others - sports of all sorts, the Bombers, Geocaching and a love of food (not always gourmet!). The Gallery team always appreciated Mike's willingness to assist with hanging exhibitions and in particular his ability to reach those high spots. Mike was not just a tall man he was a big man.
