The Jazz Trio is comprised of guitarist Mark Mosley, bass player James King, and drummer Mart Knepp. Mosley started his lifelong musical adventure when he picked up the guitar at age 11, and later developed his interest in Blues during high school.

James King is the “first call” bassist in the Washington, D.C. region for Sonny Fortune, Pharoh Sanders, and the late Stanley Turrentine. Mart Knepp began playing the drums at age six. He received his degree from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, and is currently Associate Professor of Music at Anne Arundel Community College.

In association with the Music Department at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the Museum will present saxophonist Jeremy Koch and pianist Yu-Hsuan Liao in a program of original and transcribed works for saxophone and piano from the Baroque to newly commissioned works. Selections will include Concerto in E major, BWV 1042 by Johannes Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Canzone by Max Bruch (1838-1920), French art songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), program-matic Ballade by Henri Tomasi

(1901-1971), and commissioned work Hairless Cat Sonata by John Elmquist.

Koch holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and received a Master of Music Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Liao, a native of Taipei, Taiwan, received her Masters and Doctoral Degrees of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. The concert is sponsored in part by Cinda and Spence Perry.

Kimberly Cunningham (center), first recipient of the Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship, received a $1,000 scholarship award on May 4, 2014. Ms. Cunningham graduated this past spring in the top 3% of her class at Williamsport High School, Williamsport, Maryland. She plans to study Architecture at Penn State, Mont Alto. Joining Ms. Cunningham were David Cushwa and Nancy Cushwa Nimsz, the son and daughter of Jean Cushwa.

150th Anniversary of the burning of ChambersburgOn view and part of the Museum’s collec-tion: The Burning of Chambersburg

On July 28, 1864, Confederate General

John McCausland (as ordered by General Jubal Early), demanded a ransom from the Chambersburg, PA citizens of $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in U.S. currency, or the town would be burned. The town refused to meet the ransom and on July 30 Confederates burned the town, with some soldiers refusing to participate considering it barbaric. Artist Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839-1924) created the important history painting, The Burning of Chambersburg in 1867, three years after the conflagration occurred. Knight, an eyewitness to the burn-ing, was part of the small Union contingent in Chambersburg who attempted to prevent the burning. An accomplished artist who attended the Pennsylvania Academy, Knight returned to America from his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris to join the Union Army.

Recent AcquisitionsOpens: August 23/Kerstein Gallery

This exhibition high-lights some of the recent works of art acquired by the Museum, including decorative arts, paint-ings, and sculptures.

Many of the works on view were bequeathed to the Museum by Betty and Hal Demuth of Winchester, Virginia, whose gen-erous bequest has helped grow the Museum’s collection of 19th and 20th Century American and European art. Notable pieces from the Demuth Bequest on view will include oil paintings by Francisco Luis Mora, Chauncey Foster Ryder, and Edward Potthast, whose painting Camping is pictured here.

This exhibition is organized by the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Kalamazoo, Michigan and is sponsored by Bushey Feight Morin Architects, Inc., Mr. & Mrs. Thomas C. Newcomer, Elizabeth Nicholas and Paul Kessler, and an Anonymous Donor.

pyro protagonists: A generation of Ceramic ArtistsThrough September 14/Groh Gallery

This invitational exhibition showcases over twenty influ-ential ceramic artists from the region. The works on display reflect the breadth and scope of ceramic techniques; and the

myriad of aesthetic and stylistic interpretations ceramic artists utilize. The art featured here is by Dan Finnegan, “Vase with Four Handles”, wood fired salt glazed stoneware.

Modernist printsThrough October 26/ Baer Gallery

Prints from the Museum’s permanent collection along with significant works from the collection of Spence and Cinda Perry will be on dis-play. This exhibition explores the way artists in the early

20th Century utilized various printmaking techniques to cap-ture their unique artistic vision. The Museum’s linocut Grand Nu de Femme, 1962, by Pablo Picasso will be a featured work of art along with German Expressionist and Cubist works.

81st Annual Cumberland Valley photographic SalonThrough October 26/Bowman Gallery

For over 80 years the Museum has celebrated the art of photography in this juried exhibition. Open to amateur and professional photographers, this exhibition showcases the talented photographers of the region. Exhibition sponsored in part by Conservit, Inc.

James King is the “first call” bassist in the Washington, D.C. region for Sonny Fortune, Pharoh Sanders, and the late Stanley Turrentine. Mart Knepp began playing the drums at age six. He received his degree from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, and is currently Associate Professor of Music at Anne Arundel Community College.

In association with the Music Department at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the Museum will present saxophonist Jeremy Koch and pianist Yu-Hsuan Liao in a program of original and transcribed works for saxophone and piano from the Baroque to newly commissioned works. Selections will include Concerto in E major, BWV 1042 by Johannes Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Canzone by Max Bruch (1838-1920), French art songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947), program-matic Ballade by Henri Tomasi

(1901-1971), and commissioned work Hairless Cat Sonata by John Elmquist.

Koch holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and received a Master of Music Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Liao, a native of Taipei, Taiwan, received her Masters and Doctoral Degrees of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. The concert is sponsored in part by Cinda and Spence Perry.

Kimberly Cunningham (center), first recipient of the Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship, received a $1,000 scholarship award on May 4, 2014. Ms. Cunningham graduated this past spring in the top 3% of her class at Williamsport High School, Williamsport, Maryland. She plans to study Architecture at Penn State, Mont Alto. Joining Ms. Cunningham were David Cushwa and Nancy Cushwa Nimsz, the son and daughter of Jean Cushwa.

The Jazz Trio is comprised of guitarist Mark Mosley, bass player James King, and drummer Mart Knepp. Mosley started his lifelong musical adventure when he picked up the guitar at age 11, and later developed his interest in Blues during high school.
