Welcome to Education Week 2016
Education week is a great time for schools to connect with their communities and celebrate some of the
many wonderful things happening in Education across Victoria. As a school, we have a whole range of
activities packed into this week which started yesterday with:
Monday: May 16th
Kids Matter Day: With Stoofa Steven’s
As you will know, ‘Kids Matter’ is all about promoting positive mental health and wellbeing throughout our
school community. This year we had an inspirational guest speaker, Stoofa, who came to CSPS and
delivered sessions from Prep to Year 6. Stoofa has worked with elite sports people and has a wealth of
knowledge on fitness along with developing a healthy mind and body. The sessions were focused on
‘giving things a go’, the importance of persistence e.g. FAIL = is your first attempt in learning, so if you get
it wrong you dust yourself or learn from it and have another go.
Another important message was around goal setting and not accepting a fixed trajectory in life. What you
put in is what you get back out and with the right attitude and application, you can achieve success.
Setting yourself minimum standards and giving yourself permission to play (get in and have a go). He
further customised our sessions by linking into our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Empathy,
Innovation and Excellence.
The students responded well during these high-energy sessions and the cheers and clapping could be
heard right down the hall.
Whacky Hair Day and parade. Yesterday was whacky hair day and students came to school with all
manner of amazing creations from upside down ice-cream cones, cupcakes, donuts, pointy heads, soft
drinks pouring, spiders crawling and every colour in the rainbow. At recess the students all got to share
the fun and celebrate the hard work by them and their parents, by taking part in the whacky hair day
parade. It was amazing to see so many wonderful hairdos.
Junior Disco. Prep – Year 4 students then took part in a disco at recess and got to shake their groove thing
to the beats supplied by Kellie and Amanda who were our DJ’s for the day.
Teachers vs Year 6’s Bootball
Lunchtime saw a return of Year 6’s versus the staff in an epic battle of skill and courage. Luckily with the
assistance of some Year 5’s, the staff once again finished on top but it was a close thing and the positive
participation and friendly banter were a highlight.
The Book Fair. After School the CSPS Book Fair kicked off thanks to Mrs Elliott who always does an
amazing job of this each year. The Book Fair is open every day this week before and after school until
Friday afternoon. All books purchased in the Book Fair earn commission which the school is then able to
use to purchase books for the Library and the class libraries.
Tuesday May 17th
Inter House Athletics. Years 3 – 6 Students travelled to Landy Field to take part in the Clifton Springs
Primary School Inter House Athletics Sports. The sports were a tremendous success today, with the
students doing an amazing job all day giving their best and encouraging each other as they went. The
relays as always were a highlight with the crowd cheering on the teams. Many thanks for those parents
who were able to join us at Landy Field to lend their support. Well done to Mrs Hales and Mrs Tolley who
did a wonderful job of organising all of the events and the day. Special thanks to the three volunteers
from Bellarine Secondary College and the Deakin Students who assisted in running the events.
Twilight School Tour. Tonight we have a twilight tour from 5:30 – 6:30pm for some prospective 2017 Prep
parents who aren’t able to make it to our daytime sessions. While schools are always at their best with
the children actually in them, it has been good to provide this opportunity to meet with more families.
Wednesday May 17th
On Wednesday we have a group tour from 2 – 3pm for prospective 2017 Prep enrolments.
Thursday May 18th
On Thursday we have our 3rd and final group tour from 9:15 – 10:15am. I welcome more of our
prospective 2017 Prep enrolments and look forward to touring our wonderful school with them.
Open Day. Following the final tour we open up our school to our families and community and invite you to
visit and spend some time in our classes with students and teachers.
Friday May 20th
To complete the week, our Year 3/4 students will be working with the Drysdale Clifton Springs Community
Association and Coast Care for an environment day at the Clifton Springs Jetty. Parents are more than
welcome to come along from 9:30-12pm and share in the learning with the students.

Principal’s report continued..........
NAPLAN Testing
NAPLAN testing has once again been completed for the year and over some months this will be
examined by ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) who will then eventually
return individual reports to the school to be forwarded to parents. I wanted to commend the students for
their efforts in completing the NAPLAN tests and parents for supporting them.
Year 5/6 Lightning Premiership
Last Friday after an initial problem with our bussing, our Year 5/6 students had a great day out as they
played Volley Catch, Netball, Football and Tee Ball across a number of venues. All of the teams had a
good day but our Volley Catch team once again dominated, winning every game and were very convincing
winners in the final. The spirit of competition was great with students from all sides cheering each other
on. Many thanks to the teachers, student and parents who all made the day possible. Well done one
and all!
Until next week I wish everyone a wonderful week and remind all families that maximising attendance is
a critical factor in your child achieving their potential so, remember it’s not OK to be away unless you’re
sick!

Principal
LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIPS Last Friday the Year 5/6 students participated in the Lightening Premiership competing
against other schools in our district. The students chose to represent Clifton Springs in
Football, Tee Ball, Netball or Volley Catch. It was wonderful to have parents and family
members come along to support and cheer on the teams.
T-BALL
Friday the 13th wasn’t all doom and gloom for the T-Ball team, both the boys team and girls
team gave their all and should be proud of their effort!
The boys were led by their captain Jayree and demonstrated our school values as well as great
sportsmanship. Brodie Gill’s dad coached them on the day which was a massive help, thank you
Ron! The boys drew 2 games and lost 1. The boys should be proud of their team work!
The girls team showed perseverance and great sportsmanship, their team captain, Baillie, led
the girls and did a terrific job. They had 2 loses and experienced a win! Great job girls, you
gave it your best and should be proud of it!
VOLLEY CATCH
Fourteen girls travelled to Drysdale Primary
School to participate in the Volley Catch
Tournament. A wonderful team
environment was created by our girls
through their sense of fun, positive
attitude and exemplary sportsmanship.
They were wonderful ambassadors for our
School and a pleasure to be out with for the
day. It was great to see their training at
school pay off as they won ALL FIVE of
their matches and went through to compete
in the Grand Final. They were WORTHY
VICTORS of the tournament, defeating
Surfside Primary School with a score of 22
points to 6.

WALK ON WEDNESDAY FOR MAY Our results weren't great with an overall
42.3%, thanks to a few high class results.
Most classes were well below 50%, maybe
due to the weather.
Our "Golden Sneaker" winners were
1/2K with 41% and 5/6H with 78%.
I t would be great to spread the Golden
Sneakers around so if your grade hasn’t won
the Golden Sneaker yet, don’t forget to
walk or ride at least some of the way next

DRYSDALE MARKET FOOD VAN With May being the last market, another
season for our food van has come to an end!
I would like to thank all our fantastic
volunteers for your continued and
unwavering support, your flexibility to
jump in or change shifts when necessary and
for making working on the van, a fun time!
With so many other food stalls available at
the market this season, unfortunately our
profits were down on previous years with our
total season brining in just under $2000.00.
This will go towards purchasing a Defibrilator
for our school or something student related.
Money raised from previous seasons has gone
towards building our new food van and things
like our new school BBQ and the Pipe Castle
project.
Thanks again everyone!

from Thursday June 2nd for 4 consecutive weeks until Thursday June 23rd. Starts straight after school in the gym and

More from Hilary the dietician
Taste development and preferences are learned and it is a continual process. Commonly
children will need to try a particular food 6-10 times before accepting the taste and "liking"
something. Getting children involved in growing food, shopping for food and cooking can help,
but regular exposure to a variety of foods (including that which they dislike) is key!
Finally our ultimate goal regarding our children and food is for them to reach adulthood
actually preferring healthy food. As such, trying to hide foods (veggies in lasagna for
example), rewarding or bribing children with treat foods, and locking away the treat foods is
actually training our children to desire the worst food options. Try letting your children
know that you added a "dash" of undesired veggie.
Always try to reward behaviour with other things such as a family game, trip to the park,
sleepover, play date, TV show or electronic game, rather than food.
In summary, never force a child to touch or try a food. Try to have at least one family
mealtime per day. Make the changes gradually and always offer familiar foods while
introducing the new. Never trick children into eating foods because trust is crucial in the
process of building healthy eaters. Kellie Hewson, Student Welfare Coordinator
