Field Day Are You Ready?
Each year on the last full weekend of the month of June, Amateur Radio
enthusiasts dig out their portable equipment, batteries, and for some, solar
panels, and head for the great outdoors to test their operating skills. Just
be sure to check out your equipment in advance, so you are not all packed
up and ready to go– only to discover that your coax needs to be replaced,
or you are missing some parts you forgot to replace. (Check for parts at
the Knoxville Hamfest on the Saturday before Field Day). Are you READY
for Field Day???
Field day is a GREAT time to get on the air in less than perfect conditions,
since it’s rain or shine! A perfect way to practice for emergency condi-
tions—without the actual emergency! Try operating on some new bands,
test out your CW skills, give digital modes a try at another club station!
Find out more about Field Day at: http://www.arrl.org/field-day
Send your Field Day stories and pix to

THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE & MUSIC CITY SOLAR ECLIPSE FESTIVAL
“On August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United
States will see nature's most wondrous spectacle — a total
eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the
Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep
twilight, and the Sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened sky”…. “One of the major cities visited by the
eclipse is Nashville, Tennessee. Folks in Nashville will be singing about this eclipse for years to come
as it is the largest city wholly within the path of totality.” Description and photo from https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/
and https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/tennessee/
We are very excited to announce that a special event—the Music City Solar Eclipse Festival—will be
held on Saturday August 19 and Sunday August 20 at the Adventure Science Center in Nashville, TN.
This will feature various vendors, educational exhibits and, of course, AMATEUR RADIO OPERA-
TIONS!
A special event call sign for the Amateur Radio Operation at the Science Center is pending approval.
If you can’t be with us, you will still be able to have QSO with us! We are planning on HF, UHF/VHF
radio operations, a “Spell your name in Morse Code hands-on activity”, and more!
Please be sure to stay checking your ARRL TN Section PIC news for more details about the station,
and this great celebration of one of nature’s wonders!

AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (ARES) ... If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member.
They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the com-
munications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating
skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at http://
tnares.com/ .
“ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communica-
tions during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances,
amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened.”
To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emer-
gency coordinator.
