A story of

Kiyoko Hayes

Kiyoko, also known as Kay, is a resident

of Nikkei Senior Gardens since March, 2010.

She arrived from her former home in Cotton-

wood, California, where she lived with her

husband John from 1976 until he passed away

in November, 2009. At Nikkei Senior Gardens

you may find her singing which has been a life-

long passion. She also sews, paints, and loves

flower arranging.

On February 3, 1926 Kiyoko was born the first daughter of Tamotsu Ito

and his wife, Haruyo. Her place of birth was 246 Iriya-cho, Shitaya-ku,

Tokyo-shi. She has three younger sisters still living in Japan; her four

brothers are deceased. Kiyoko’s father was a carpenter who was kept

busy rebuilding Tokyo during and

after the war. Her mother was a

seamstress who sewed kimonos.

As a little girl, Kiyoko helped her

mother by threading needles

which meant she had not time for

play. Her mother gave her money

as a reward to buy candy, but Ki-

yoko did not buy candy. She

bought needles instead! When she had enough needles, she pre-

threaded them and set them out for her mother ---- and then went out to

play!

You can read more about Kiyoko’s life story in the solarium.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase,

just take the first step.

Laughter is the Best

Medicine

Humor is infectious. The sound of roar-ing laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people togeth-er and increases happiness and intimacy. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body, such as strengthen-ing your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Laughter is strong medicine for mind and body, a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

Here are a few benefits of laughter:

Laughter relaxes the whole body.

Laughter relieves physical tension and stress, leaving muscles relaxed up to 45-minutes after.

Laughter boosts the immune system.

Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells.

Laughter triggers the release of en-

dorphins, which promote an overall sense of well-being and can even tem-porarily relieve pain.

Laughter protects the heart. Laughter

improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against cardiovascular problems.

So, let’s start the new year off with a good

laugh! Happy New Year! Three sisters

ages 92, 94 & 96 live in a house together.

One night the 96 year old draws a bath.

She puts her foot in and pauses. She yells

to the other sisters, "Was I getting in or

out of the bath?" The 94 year old yells

back, "I don't know, I'll come up and see."

She starts up the stairs and pauses "Was

I going up the stairs or down?" The 92

year old is sitting at the kitchen table hav-

ing tea listening to her sisters. Shaking

her head she says, "I sure hope I never

get that forgetful, knock on wood." She

then yells, "I'll come up and help both of

you as soon as I see who's at the

door."

Oya Koko Foundation

On December 8th, Nikkei Senior Gardens hosted an “Open House” at which time the original community members who loaned over $1 million to support the construction of Nikkei Senior Gardens between 2001 and 2008 were re-paid. With interest, the total repayment came to $1.8 million. Additionally, the $2.3 million loan taken by the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center (SFVJACC), using the Community Center as collateral and also, to support the construction of Nikkei Senior Gardens, was repaid. These significant repayments were made possible by the sale of Nikkei Village and the use of the proceeds to pay all debts.

The Open House was a day of celebration enjoyed by the original lenders, donors, residents, their families and friends. We would like to thank the following individuals for their assistance in making the day an enjoyable and memorable occasion:

(All items were prepared & donated by members of the Board of Directors of the Oya Koko Foundation.)

Masa Arikawa and Kirk Fukumoto for preparing the wonderful cut rolls and nigiri sushi

Ron Takasugi for paying for the rental of the cocktail tables and linens.

Gary Sumida for paying for the fish for the sushi bar.

The Japanese New Year,

known as Oshogatsu, is

an annual festival with it’s

own customs. The pre-

ceding days are quite

busy, particularly the day

before, known as Omi-

soka. While New Year’s

Day is the most important day of the year. Omisoka is

probably the second-most important day in Japanese

tradition because it is the final day of the old year and the

eve of New Year’s Day. Around 11:00pm on Omisoka at

home, people often gather for one last time in the old year

to have a bowl of toshikoshi-soba or udon together.

Toshikoshi means “crossing over from one year to the

next,” which is where the tradition of eating long noodles

is associated from. Traditionally, families make Osechi

for New Year Day because booking during the first 3 days

of the New Year is considered unlucky. Osechi consists

of boiled seaweed, fish cakes, kurikinton, kinpira gobo

and kuromame. Today sashimi and sushi and other

Japanese & non-Japanese foods are often eaten as well.
