2017 ARMORY NYC INDOOR MARATHON SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Since 2002, the non-profi t Armory Foundation has provided a tuition-free, after-school college prep program to high school track athletes. More than 90% of students

who participate in the academically rigorous Armory College Prep program gain acceptance to college. This is especially remarkable considering that the majority of our students come from high schools with 50% or lower graduation rates, and where few continue on to college.

Given Armory College Prep’s success, we expanded our mission to target middle school athletes. Reaching students earlier provides more time to bring out each student’s best, and maximize his or her chances for admission to competitive colleges.

The Armory College Prep Middle School Program provides these young students with excellent academic support, and math and technology skills.

Both Armory College Prep High School and Middle School expand

their programs over the summer time to better serve our aspiring students.

In 1993, then-NYC Mayor David Dinkins handed Dr. Norbert Sander the keys to the Armory, and said, “Good luck.”

Neighborhood crime was rampant. The broken building was testament to a

broken system.

But after gaining the old building, Sander faced a monumental task. He’d discovered men still living there. Over and over, he’d sweep up needles from drug users. With no nighttime security, many migrated in from ne xt door.

But in the fall of 1993, Sander’s and the Foundation’s e� orts resulted in a new track.

“Before you knew it, it was cooking,” he said.

Cooking meant 40,000-50,000 athletes the fi rst year. Last year, the building that holds championship high school and college meets, the New Balance Nationals and Millrose Games, hosted 164,000 athletes.

The real superstars are there Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Those days, 1,000 kids train with their 50 NYC schools from 3-6 p.m. Then more than 100, with a few more coming from other city track programs, receive dinner, academic instruction and the hammered-home message they count just as much as the next person.

The program evolved from Sander reveling in the Armory’s “all-of-society” diversity but also being saddened by it. On the track, every kid had a chance. But they later hit the sidewalk as haves and have-nots, some going “home” to homeless shelters.

He’d hear former Westchester high school athletes were in college. He’d ask about kids from poor parts of the city and be told, “He’s walking the streets” or “The poor girl’s pregnant.”

“What’s the purpose of running around in circles if there’s nothing there at the end? What was the good of the thing?” Sander asked.

Armory College Prep, which runs two-and-a-half hours Tuesday and Thursday nights and fi ve days a week in summer, is the 10-year-old program that for the last two years has also had a middle-school component serving 40 neighborhood children.

including for special events like last weekend’s indoor marathons in which Sander participated.

One million dollars is raised and spent every year: Kids charged zero.

Eighty percent -85 percent of the kids in the program can’t get track scholarships.

“Academics is most important,” Sander said.

And all 100-plus high school students get on-site help with writing and more and a computer to take home that’s linked to 24-hour academic help.

There are fi eld trips to colleges that reinforce an idea many never receive at home – that anything is possible, that working menial jobs doesn’t have to be their destiny.

Nearly 95 percent go to college – “easily 1,000 kids” so far.

“Some of the obstacles they jump over would make your hair stand on end but they do it and we make sure they don’t give up,” Sander said.

One kid is at Mount Holyoke. One was just accepted at Dartmouth, another into both Williams and Amherst.

With acceptance letters still coming in, the Class of 2016 already has $2.2 million in aca-demic scholarships for next year.

Yes, Sander has run with the best and, on occasion, been the best. But of all his accom-plishments, including winning the NYC Marathon, he said, “That’s great if it helps people pay more attention to what you’re pitching for kids – if it gives this a legitimacy. But

SETTING TRACK & FIELD RECORDS SINCE 1914

The fi rst New York City Marathon had only 127 competitors, and only 55

fi nished the race. Today, more than 50,000 runners complete the New York City

Marathon every year.
